Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Door

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

The voice from my father’s office wasn’t loud.

It wasn’t threatening.

It was almost gentle.

And somehow, that made it worse.

Because I knew that voice.

“Ethan?””

The name escaped my lips before I could stop it.

Vivian’s face changed instantly.

Ashley looked confused.

“Who’s Ethan?””

Nobody answered her.

The door to my father’s office slowly opened.

A man stepped out.

Older than I remembered.

Tired.

His hair was streaked with gray, and his face carried the kind of sadness that came from years of regret.

But it was him.

My father’s younger brother.

My uncle Ethan.

The man who disappeared from our lives twelve years ago.

The man everyone told me had abandoned the family.

I stared at him.

“You’re alive.””

His eyes filled with guilt.

“Hannah…”

I took a step back.

“No.””

The memories came rushing back.

My father sitting at the kitchen table after Ethan left.

The phone calls that never got answered.

The way my father changed afterward.

I was sixteen when it happened.

I remembered asking, “Where’s Uncle Ethan?””

And my father only said, “Sometimes people make choices they can never take back.””

Now Ethan was standing in the house.

In my father’s office.

The same office Vivian claimed she couldn’t enter.

“How did you get in there?”” I asked.

Ethan looked at Vivian.

“I had a key.””

Vivian’s face went pale.

Ashley looked between them.

“Mom?””

I turned toward Vivian.

“You knew he was here.””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Mr. Harrison stepped forward.

“Ethan, you were supposed to wait.””

“I tried,” Ethan said quietly.

His eyes moved to me.

“But after what happened yesterday, I knew I couldn’t stay hidden.””

My hands shook.

“What happened yesterday?””

He looked at me with pain in his eyes.

“You were thrown out of your own home.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“How do you know that?””

“Because I saw it.””

My heart stopped.

“You were here?””

Ethan nodded.

“I arrived after your father died.””

The driveway.

The suitcase.

Vivian’s laughter.

He had seen all of it.

“Why didn’t you help me?””

His expression broke.

“Because your father made me promise.””

The words stunned me.

“My father?””

“He knew Vivian would react this way.””

Vivian suddenly stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

Everyone looked at her.

Her calm mask was gone.

“Ethan, you have no right to come back here.””

Ethan laughed quietly.

“No right?””

His voice changed.

“You destroyed Daniel’s trust, Vivian.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You should be careful.””

“No,” Ethan replied.

“You should have been.””

The tension between them felt older than me.

Older than the house.

“What happened?”” I asked.

Nobody spoke.

So I asked again.

“What happened between all of you?””

Ethan looked at me.

“Your father found out Vivian was not who she claimed to be.””

“I know that part.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You know she lied about money.””

He stepped closer.

“But you don’t know why.””

Mr. Harrison opened his folder.

“This is what the trust was created for.””

He pulled out another document.

“A complete record of Vivian’s history before she married Daniel.””

Vivian’s voice became sharp.

“Give me that.””

She reached forward.

But Ethan stepped between them.

“You don’t get to destroy the truth anymore.””

Ashley looked terrified.

“Mom, what is going on?””

Vivian ignored her.

“Hannah, don’t listen to them.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because they’re trying to turn you against your family.””

The irony almost made me laugh.

“My family?””

I looked at the suitcase still sitting near the driveway.

“The woman who threw me out six hours after my father died?””

Vivian’s face tightened.

“That was emotional.””

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“That was you showing me who you are.””

For the first time, she looked at me like I wasn’t the weak girl she expected.

Ethan noticed.

And so did Mr. Harrison.

Ethan took a deep breath.

“Your father left one more thing.””

“What?””

He reached into his coat pocket.

A small envelope.

My name was written on it.

Again.

In my father’s handwriting.

My hands trembled as I accepted it.

“When did he write this?””

“The night before he went to the hospital.””

I stared at the envelope.

“Why didn’t he give it to me?””

Ethan looked toward Vivian.

“Because he knew if she found out what was inside, you would never be safe.””

The words made the entire world go quiet.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was one sentence.

Only one.

But it changed everything.

Hannah, if you are reading this, it means Vivian found out about the second truth.

I looked up.

“What second truth?””

Ethan’s expression turned serious.

“Your father discovered who actually betrayed him.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Ethan looked directly at Vivian.

And said:

“The person who tried to destroy Daniel’s life wasn’t an outsider.””

May you like

A long silence.

“It was someone inside this house.””
