Chapter 13: The Mother I Never Knew

I couldn’t breathe.

The woman standing in front of me was a stranger.

But she had my eyes.

My father’s photographs.

The face I had spent years imagining.

My mother.

Alive.

The word didn’t make sense.

I looked at Vivian.

For the first time, she wasn’t angry.

She wasn’t controlling.

She looked defeated.

“Mom?”” Ashley whispered.

The woman looked at her.

A sad smile appeared.

“I’m sorry.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody knew what to say.

I finally found my voice.

“Who are you?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I’m Claire.””

The name meant nothing.

But my heart already knew.

“Claire what?””

She swallowed.

“Claire Bennett.””

The same last name Laura had mentioned.

My mind raced.

Another secret.

Another person connected to Vivian’s past.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“My mother’s name was Emily.””

The woman looked down.

“I know.””

“Then why are you here?””

She took a slow breath.

“Because Emily was the name I had to disappear under.””

The room went silent.

Mr. Harrison stepped forward.

“Claire, you shouldn’t have come here.””

She looked at him.

“I should have come years ago.””

That sentence hurt.

Years.

Years I spent believing my mother abandoned me.

Years wondering why my father never talked about her.

“You were alive,” I whispered.

“Yes.””

“Where were you?””

Her eyes moved to Vivian.

And Vivian looked away.

“I was running.””

“From who?””

Claire looked at me.

“From the people who wanted me silent.””

My stomach tightened.

“Vivian?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked surprised.

“Then who?””

Claire’s expression became painful.

“Your father.””

The words hit me harder than I expected.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

“I know how it sounds.””

“Then explain.””

Claire nodded.

“Daniel didn’t hurt me because he hated me.””

“Then why?””

“Because he was trying to protect you.””

Again.

That word.

Protect.

I was tired of hearing it.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice broke.

“But nobody tells me anything.””

Claire walked closer.

“Because the truth is complicated.””

“No.””

I wiped my tears.

“The truth is the only thing I have left.””

She looked at me.

Then finally said:

“I was never your biological mother.””

The room went completely still.

I stared at her.

“What?””

Claire cried quietly.

“Your real mother died when you were born.””

I couldn’t speak.

“Then who are you?””

She took my hand.

A gesture that felt familiar even though we had never met.

“I was your mother’s closest friend.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Your father loved your mother. When she died, he couldn’t raise you alone. I helped him.””

My heart pounded.

“So why did he hide you?””

Claire looked at Vivian.

“Because Vivian found out.””

The room became colder.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

Vivian whispered:

“Claire…”

“No.””

Claire looked at her.

“You don’t get to pretend anymore.””

I looked between them.

“What did Vivian know?””

Claire answered:

“That Daniel was not the only person protecting you.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Claire reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

Again.

My father’s handwriting.

“How many letters did he leave?””

Claire smiled sadly.

“Enough for every truth you were forced to discover.””

I opened it.

Inside was a note.

Hannah,

If Claire comes back, it means she believes you are ready.

My hands trembled.

She knows the truth about your birth. She knows the truth about Vivian. But most importantly, she knows the truth about why I trusted the wrong people.

I looked up.

“Wrong people?””

Claire nodded.

“Your father discovered someone was manipulating everyone.””

“Who?””

She looked at Mr. Harrison.

Then Ethan.

Then Vivian.

“No one here.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“Then who?””

Claire’s voice became quiet.

“The person who disappeared twelve years ago.””

My blood ran cold.

“Twelve years ago?””

The same year Ethan vanished.

Claire continued:

“Your father believed Ethan left because he betrayed him.””

Ethan looked away.

“But that wasn’t true.””

I stared at my uncle.

“Then why did he disappear?””

Claire looked toward the door.

“Because he found the person who was behind everything.””

“Who?””

Before she could answer, the lights suddenly went out.

Everyone froze.

A sound came from upstairs.

A door opening.

Then footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Coming closer.

Claire grabbed my hand.

And whispered:

“Hannah…”

May you like

Her voice shook.

“He’s here.””
