Chapter 8: The Grandfather Who Wasn’t Gone

I couldn’t speak.

The voice on the phone stayed silent.

Waiting.

Like he knew I was trying to understand the impossible.

“My grandfather is dead.””

The words came out automatically.

The man sighed.

“Your father wanted you to believe that.””

I looked at my father.

His face changed instantly.

“Emily, hang up.””

I ignored him.

“How do you know my father?””

A quiet laugh came through the phone.

“Because I raised him.””

My stomach twisted.

“You’re lying.””

“I wish I was.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Nobody moved.

Then my father grabbed his jacket.

“Emily, you need to stay away from this.””

I turned toward him.

“Stay away?””

My voice rose.

“You lied to me about my grandfather.””

He looked desperate.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

That hurt him.

But I needed him to hear it.

Natalie stepped forward.

“Emily, your grandfather disappeared after your mother discovered the financial records.””

“Why?””

“Because she threatened to expose him.””

I looked at the folder.

“Why would my mother have evidence against him?””

Natalie answered softly.

“Because she knew he was the person controlling everything.””

Claire looked at my father.

“You never told her.””

My father looked angry.

“You weren’t exactly honest either.””

The two of them stared at each other.

And suddenly I realized something.

They had spent years blaming each other.

But both of them had been hiding the same truth.

I sat down.

“I need to understand.””

Nobody spoke.

So I continued.

“Why did Mom hide the letters in the dress?””

Natalie sat across from me.

“Because your mother knew the dress would stay with you.””

I looked down.

“She knew I would protect it.””

“Yes.””

A painful smile appeared on Natalie’s face.

“She told me, ‘Emily will keep that dress safe because she keeps the people she loves safe.’”

My eyes filled.

Even after all these years, my mother knew me.

I wiped my face.

“What happened after she found out?””

Natalie looked at my father.

“He begged her not to reveal everything.””

I looked at him.

“Did you?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I was afraid of losing everything.””

I stared at him.

“You already lost everything.””

He looked away.

Before anyone could speak, the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stood there.

Older.

Tall.

Gray hair.

Wearing a dark coat.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew his face.

I had seen it before.

In the photograph.

Victor Carter.

My grandfather.

My father stepped in front of me.

“Why are you here?””

Victor looked at him.

“Because she found the letters.””

His eyes moved to me.

“Emily.””

I couldn’t move.

“You’re alive.””

He gave a sad smile.

“Yes.””

I felt anger rising.

“You let everyone think you were dead.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His expression changed.

“Because your mother was right.””

The room went silent.

“She knew if I stayed, I would destroy everything she was trying to protect.””

I looked at him.

“What did you do?””

Victor didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at the torn blue dress.

“You found the beginning.””

I frowned.

“The beginning?””

He nodded.

“But not the worst part.””

My father looked terrified.

“Victor, don’t.””

Victor ignored him.

He reached into his coat.

And pulled out an old envelope.

He placed it on the table.

“This is the letter your mother wrote after she discovered the truth.””

I stared.

Another letter.

Another secret.

“How many things did she leave behind?””

Victor looked at me.

“Enough to expose everyone who betrayed her.””

I reached for the envelope.

But before my fingers touched it, Victor said something that stopped me.

“Emily, before you read this, you need to know one thing.””

I looked up.

“Your mother didn’t die because of her illness.””

The room froze.

My heart pounded.

“What?””

May you like

Victor’s voice became quiet.

“She died because someone wanted her silent.””
