Chapter 11: The Recording My Mother Left Me

We watched the recording in silence.
The old television in the living room flickered before the screen finally turned on.
For a few seconds, there was nothing.
Then my mother appeared.
My breath disappeared.
I hadn’t seen her face move in years.
A photograph couldn’t prepare me for that.
Her smile.
Her eyes.
The way she looked into the camera like she was looking directly at me.
“Emily.””
I covered my mouth.
Everyone in the room became still.
“If you’re watching this, then I hope I was wrong.””
My mother took a deep breath.
“But if I wasn’t, then you need to know why I hid everything.””
She looked tired.
But strong.
“Your father loves you.””
My father looked down.
“But love does not erase mistakes.””
The words hit him.
My mother continued.
“I discovered something that changed everything.””
The screen shook slightly.
Like she had moved the camera.
“I found out someone was using our family to hide financial crimes.””
I looked at Victor.
Then my father.
My mother continued.
“I thought the person responsible was obvious.””
She paused.
“But I was wrong.””
Everyone leaned closer.
“The person who caused the damage wasn’t the person I suspected.””
My heart raced.
“Your father was not the beginning.””
My father closed his eyes.
I looked at the screen.
“Then who was?””
My mother looked away from the camera.
Like she was afraid someone might hear.
“The person who controlled your grandfather.””
Victor’s face changed.
“What?””
My mother’s voice continued.
“There was someone above him.””
The room became silent.
Someone above Victor?
That seemed impossible.
Victor had controlled everyone.
My mother continued.
“Someone who knew how to manipulate people without ever getting close.””
The screen flickered.
Then my mother said something that made everyone freeze.
“Claire is not the person you should fear.””
I looked at Claire.
She stared at the screen.
Confused.
My mother continued.
“She made terrible choices. But she was scared.””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“She was protecting Madison.””
Claire looked away.
Then my mother said:
“The person you need to find is the person who benefited from all of this.””
The recording ended.
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, I whispered:
“That’s it?””
Natalie shook her head.
“No.””
She pointed at the flash drive.
“There may be another file.””
We checked.
There was one more video.
A shorter one.
I pressed play.
This time, my mother wasn’t alone.
She was sitting across from someone.
Someone whose face was hidden.
But I recognized the voice immediately.
The same voice from the phone.
My entire body froze.
“You need to stop this.””
My mother’s voice.
The other person laughed.
“You think anyone will believe you?””
My mother leaned forward.
“I have proof.””
The person responded:
“Then you should have protected your daughter better.””
My heart stopped.
The camera moved slightly.
And for one second, the person’s hand appeared.
A ring.
A very specific ring.
I looked at Victor.
Then my father.
Because both of them recognized it.
My father whispered:
“No.””
I turned.
“What?””
He looked terrified.
“That ring belonged to someone in our family.””
The video ended.
I stared at him.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Claire slowly stood.
Her face had gone pale.
“I know that ring.””
Everyone looked at her.
She whispered:
“Because I saw it the night your mother died.””
The room went silent.
My heart pounded.
“Who was wearing it?””
Claire looked at me.
And said:
“Your aunt.””
I froze.
“My aunt?””
May you like
Claire nodded.
“The sister your father told you never existed.””
