Chapter 7: The Man My Father Erased

I stared at the envelope for what felt like an eternity.
The handwriting wasn’t familiar.
It wasn’t my mother’s careful, elegant writing.
It was rougher.
Sharper.
Like whoever wrote it had been in a hurry.
My name was written across the front.
*Emily, from the man your father wanted you to forget.*
I looked at my father.
His face had lost all color.
“Who wrote that?””
Nobody answered.
That scared me more than anything.
Because everyone in the room knew.
Everyone except me.
“Dad.””
My voice cracked.
“Who is this from?””
He looked at Natalie.
“Did you bring that here?””
Natalie nodded.
“Your mother asked me to keep it safe.””
My father shook his head.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“No?””
He stepped closer.
“Emily, you don’t understand.””
I laughed quietly.
“That’s the problem, Dad.””
I held up the envelope.
“I never understood anything because everyone kept deciding what I was allowed to know.””
He looked hurt.
But I couldn’t stop.
“For years, I thought losing Mom was the hardest thing that ever happened to me.””
My voice trembled.
“I was wrong.””
The room became silent.
“The hardest part was finding out the people who stayed alive were the ones hiding things from me.””
My father looked down.
Natalie gently touched the folder.
“Emily, before you open that, you should know something.””
“What?””
“This letter was written before your mother died.””
I froze.
“Before?””
She nodded.
“It was delivered to your mother by this man.””
I looked at the photograph again.
“Who is he?””
My father whispered,
“Thomas.””
The name meant nothing.
“Who is Thomas?””
My father sat down.
“He was my business partner.””
“Was?””
He nodded.
“Years ago.””
“What happened between you?””
My father looked exhausted.
“He found out I had made mistakes.””
Natalie interrupted.
“He found out your father was covering up financial problems.””
My father looked at her.
“Enough.””
“No.””
Natalie’s voice became firm.
“Emily deserves the truth.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single letter.
The first line made my heart stop.
*Emily, I don’t know if your father will ever tell you what happened.*
I swallowed.
I kept reading.
*I worked with your father for fifteen years. I trusted him like a brother. But when the company began failing, he made choices that affected everyone around him.*
I looked at my father.
His eyes were closed.
*Your mother discovered the truth before anyone else. She tried to fix it. She tried to protect you.*
My hands tightened around the paper.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
*The money wasn’t taken by accident. It was moved intentionally. Your father was pressured by someone else. Someone who threatened everything he loved.*
I stopped.
Someone else.
I looked up.
“Who pressured you?””
My father didn’t answer.
Claire slowly sat down.
She looked frightened again.
Not because of me.
Because she knew something worse was coming.
“Dad.””
He finally looked at me.
“I made a deal.””
“What kind of deal?””
He swallowed.
“One that I thought would save us.””
“But it didn’t.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“It destroyed us.””
I stared at him.
“Who was behind it?””
He looked at the photograph.
Then at the floor.
“I never wanted you involved.””
“That’s not your choice anymore.””
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he spoke.
“Your grandfather.””
I froze.
“My grandfather?””
My mother’s father had died when I was young.
That couldn’t be right.
“My grandfather is dead.””
My father nodded.
“Your mother’s father.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Natalie looked at me.
“Emily, your grandfather wasn’t involved.””
I turned toward her.
“Then who?””
She took a deep breath.
“Your father’s father.””
I felt cold.
“My grandfather on Dad’s side?””
My father nodded slowly.
“He was alive when everything happened.””
“And he threatened you?””
My father looked away.
“Yes.””
The room fell silent.
A man I had never met.
A secret my mother buried.
A family history nobody wanted me to know.
Then my phone rang.
I looked down.
A number I didn’t recognize.
Everyone watched me.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A deep voice came through.
“Emily Carter?””
“Yes.””
There was a pause.
Then the man said,
“I’ve been waiting a long time for you to find the dress.””
My blood ran cold.
“How do you know about that?””
The voice lowered.
“Because your mother hid something inside it that could destroy my entire family.””
I stood frozen.
“Who are you?””
Another pause.
Then:
“My name is Victor Carter.””
I stopped breathing.
May you like
Because that was my grandfather’s name.
The man everyone told me was gone.
