Chapter 14: The Choice My Mother Left Me

I stared at the message.

Every instinct told me not to trust it.

But one word controlled everything.

Alive.

My mother.

Alive.

For years, I had carried the pain of losing her.

The idea that she might still be somewhere in this world felt impossible.

And dangerous.

“Don’t go.””

My father’s voice was immediate.

I looked at him.

“You don’t get to tell me what to do.””

He flinched.

I hated that I said it.

But I meant it.

“You took my mother from me once.””

My voice shook.

“I won’t let you take this chance away too.””

Natalie stepped closer.

“Emily, this could be a trap.””

“I know.””

“And you’re still thinking about going?””

I looked at the letter in my hand.

My mother had left me another piece of herself.

Another reason to keep fighting.

“Yes.””

Victor shook his head.

“You don’t understand who you’re dealing with.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I held his gaze.

“I’m finally starting to.””

The location arrived moments later.

An abandoned lakeside house outside town.

The same place my mother used to take me when I was little.

I went there with my father and Natalie despite the warning.

I refused to go alone.

When we arrived, the house looked forgotten.

Broken paint.

Overgrown grass.

But the lights were on.

Someone was inside.

My father grabbed my arm.

“Emily.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He hesitated.

Then said something I never expected.

“I’m sorry.””

Those two words almost broke me.

Because they were the words I had waited years to hear.

Not an explanation.

Not an excuse.

Just an apology.

The door opened before I could answer.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

My world stopped.

Because I knew those eyes.

“Mom?””

The woman covered her mouth.

And cried.

“Emily.””

I couldn’t move.

My mind told me it was impossible.

My heart didn’t care.

I ran.

She held me.

And for the first time in years, I felt like a missing piece of myself had returned.

We cried without speaking.

All the years.

All the birthdays.

All the moments she missed.

Gone in one embrace.

Finally, she whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

I pulled back.

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I thought staying away would protect you.””

I shook my head.

“It hurt me.””

“I know.””

She touched my face.

“I know now.””

Inside the house, my mother explained everything.

After the accident, she survived.

But she discovered Evelyn was more dangerous than anyone realized.

“She threatened you,” I said.

My mother nodded.

“She knew Emily was my weakness.””

My father looked down.

“I should have protected you both.””

My mother looked at him.

“You should have told the truth.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

My mother reached for my hand.

“I left clues because I knew one day you would find them.””

“The dress.””

She smiled sadly.

“The dress.””

I laughed through tears.

“Madison destroyed it.””

My mother smiled slightly.

“She actually helped.””

I looked confused.

“What?””

“The dress was designed with hidden seams.””

I blinked.

“She knew?””

My mother nodded.

“She knew someone might try to take it.””

Then my expression changed.

“Wait.””

I looked at her.

“Why did Claire’s letter say you knew what she did?””

My mother sighed.

“Because Claire helped Evelyn.””

The room went quiet.

“But she also tried to fix it later.””

I thought about Claire.

Her fear.

Her guilt.

Her confession.

“She changed.””

My mother nodded.

“Yes.””

Then she looked toward the window.

Her expression changed.

“Emily.””

“What?””

She looked worried.

“There’s something else.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

My mother held my hand.

“The person who sent that message…”

She paused.

“They weren’t trying to bring you to me.””

My heart stopped.

“Then why?””

My mother looked at the door.

“Because they wanted all of us in one place.””

A loud sound came from outside.

The lights went out.

May you like

And my mother whispered:

“He’s here.””
