Chapter 5: The Woman My Mother Trusted

The photograph shook in my hand.

I stared at the image.

A woman standing beside my mother.

They were smiling.

They looked happy.

Like they had shared a secret nobody else knew.

I knew that face.

But I couldn’t understand why.

“Who is she?””

My father looked over.

The second he saw the picture, his expression changed.

Again.

Fear.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Who is she?””

My father slowly sat down.

“Her name is Natalie.””

The name meant nothing to me.

“Who is Natalie?””

He looked at the floor.

“She worked with your mother.””

“Worked with her doing what?””

He hesitated.

“Financial records.””

My stomach dropped.

Claire had mentioned records.

Proof.

Copies.

I looked back at the picture.

“My mother trusted her?””

“Yes.””

“More than you?””

My father didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

I continued reading my mother’s letter.

Emily,

Natalie helped me discover what happened. She showed me things I never wanted to believe.

Your father made choices that hurt our family.

But he was not alone.

I stopped.

Not alone.

I looked toward the hallway where Claire had disappeared.

The next sentence made my fingers go numb.

Claire knew.

I closed my eyes.

I already knew that part.

But the next words changed everything.

She didn’t just know. She helped hide it.

I looked at my father.

“Did Mom know everything?””

He whispered,

“Yes.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“And you still let me live with her?””

His face broke.

“I thought Claire had changed.””

I stared at him.

“You thought?””

He covered his face.

“I was ashamed.””

I walked away from him.

Ashamed.

That word couldn’t fix years.

It couldn’t fix the fact that I spent birthdays without my mother while the people around me hid the truth.

I went downstairs.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

I found Claire sitting alone in the kitchen.

She wasn’t drinking wine anymore.

She was staring at the table.

For once, she didn’t look powerful.

She looked exhausted.

“Did you know Natalie?””

She looked up.

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Since before your mother died.””

I pulled out the chair.

“You helped cover up Dad’s mistake.””

Claire looked away.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

I expected another lie.

Another excuse.

Instead, she simply admitted it.

“Why?””

Her eyes became cold.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“Losing everything.””

I laughed quietly.

“So you destroyed my family to protect yourself?””

“No.””

Her voice became sharper.

“I destroyed myself trying to protect my daughter.””

I frowned.

“Madison?””

Claire nodded.

“She was young. She needed stability.””

I stared at her.

“You’re saying you did this for her?””

“Yes.””

I couldn’t believe it.

“You took my mother’s truth away from me for your daughter?””

Claire looked down.

“I made a terrible choice.””

A silence followed.

Then she said something I didn’t expect.

“Your mother knew.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“She knew I was scared.””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“She knew I wasn’t evil. She knew I was desperate.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because for the first time, Claire wasn’t defending herself.

She was admitting guilt.

“But your mother also knew something else.””

“What?””

Claire looked directly at me.

“She knew your father was hiding something bigger.””

My heartbeat changed.

“Bigger than the money?””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

“What?””

She opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

A sound came from outside.

A car door closing.

Claire looked toward the window.

Her face went pale.

I turned.

A woman was standing outside our house.

Older.

Holding a folder.

My heart started racing.

May you like

Claire whispered one name.

“Natalie.””
