Chapter 12: The Family Member They Erased

I couldn’t understand the words.

“My aunt?””

Claire nodded slowly.

“Your father had a sister.””

I looked at my father.

He didn’t deny it.

That hurt.

Because I had learned something important.

The truth didn’t shock me anymore.

The lies did.

“How long were you going to hide that?””

My father looked away.

“Forever, if I could.””

I laughed quietly.

“Of course.””

Victor stood.

“Her name was Evelyn.””

The name felt strange.

A person I had never known.

A person everyone had erased.

“What happened to her?””

Nobody answered.

Then Natalie spoke.

“She disappeared after your mother discovered the financial records.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because she was involved.””

My stomach tightened.

“So my aunt was the person behind this?””

Natalie shook her head.

“We don’t know.””

Claire stepped closer.

“But your mother knew something about her.””

“What?””

Claire looked toward the old house.

“She knew Evelyn wasn’t gone.””

I felt cold.

“Everyone thought she disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“Then where was she?””

Claire looked at my father.

“Ask him.””

I turned.

“Dad.””

He sat down slowly.

“I didn’t want you to know.””

“Why?””

He looked broken.

“Because Evelyn was dangerous.””

The room went silent.

“What does that mean?””

My father took a deep breath.

“She spent her entire life believing she deserved everything this family had.””

Victor looked ashamed.

“She was my mistake.””

I stared.

“What did she do?””

My father looked at the floor.

“She manipulated people.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He finally looked at me.

“She convinced me to make the first illegal transaction.””

My heart sank.

“But why?””

“Because she promised she could save the company.””

I shook my head.

“So everything started because of her?””

“No.””

My father’s voice became quiet.

“It started because I trusted her.””

The honesty hurt.

Because I knew he meant it.

I walked to the window.

Outside, the night was completely dark.

Then headlights appeared.

A car stopped in front of the house.

Everyone froze.

Victor whispered:

“She’s here.””

My heart raced.

“Evelyn?””

Nobody answered.

The front door opened.

Slowly.

A woman stepped inside.

Elegant.

Confident.

Older than I expected.

Her eyes moved across the room.

And stopped on me.

For a moment, she looked emotional.

Then she smiled.

“Emily.””

I stepped back.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked at my father.

Then at the dress on the table.

“I see your mother finally found a way to tell you.””

My hands tightened.

“You’re Evelyn.””

She smiled.

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

“You’re alive.””

She nodded.

“And I’ve been waiting for this moment for a very long time.””

I looked at my father.

Then at her.

“Why?””

Evelyn walked closer.

“Because your mother left you something.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She looked at the blue dress.

“The truth.””

I felt my anger rising.

“No. You don’t get to walk in here and pretend you’re helping me.””

Her smile faded.

“You’re right.””

She reached into her bag.

And pulled out a photograph.

She placed it on the table.

“This is why your mother was afraid.””

I looked down.

It was a picture of my mother.

But she wasn’t alone.

Standing beside her was a person I never expected.

My father.

And beside him…

Was me.

As a child.

But the date written on the back made my blood run cold.

Because it was taken after the day everyone told me my mother had died.
