Chapter 6: The Man Behind Vanessa’s Smile

I didn’t sleep that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Lily sitting on the floor.

I saw Ethan standing in front of her.

A nine-year-old boy trying to be a shield.

At 6:14 in the morning, my phone rang.

It was Michael.

I answered immediately.

“What did you find?””

His voice was serious.

“His name is Daniel Parker.””

I sat up.

“Who is he?””

“Someone Vanessa dated before you.””

I stared at the wall.

“She never told me.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Michael hesitated.

“Because Daniel disappeared after some financial problems.””

I frowned.

“What kind of problems?””

“Fraud allegations.””

I stood up.

“Are you saying Vanessa was involved?””

“I’m saying you need to be careful.””

I looked toward the hallway.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

“Where is she?””

Michael paused.

“She came back?””

I looked outside.

Vanessa’s car was parked in the driveway.

My entire body tensed.

“She’s here.””

“Don’t confront her alone.””

But I had already walked downstairs.

Vanessa was standing in the kitchen.

Making coffee.

Like nothing had happened.

Like she hadn’t terrified my children.

Like she hadn’t been exposed.

“You’re awake early,” she said.

I stared at her.

“You know Daniel Parker?””

The coffee cup stopped halfway to her mouth.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

That tiny moment of fear.

Then she smiled.

“Who?””

I placed my phone on the counter.

“Don’t lie to me.””

Her expression changed.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.””

I opened the messages.

Her face went pale.

“You went through my things?””

“You planned this.””

“No.””

“You wanted me to think my children were the problem.””

She stepped closer.

“You’re making a huge mistake.””

“Am I?””

“Yes.””

Her voice became colder.

“Because if you destroy this family, you’ll regret it.””

I looked at her.

“You destroyed it.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t know the truth.””

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

“Ask your children why they never told you what really happened before we got married.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

Before she could answer, a small voice came from the stairs.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

Lily was standing there.

Holding something in her hand.

A photograph.

She looked terrified.

“I found this in Vanessa’s room.””

I walked toward her.

“What is it?””

She handed it to me.

I looked down.

It was a picture of Vanessa.

Standing beside Daniel.

And between them…

Was a child.

A child I recognized.

Because the little boy in the photo looked exactly like someone I saw every day.

I looked at Ethan.

Then back at the picture.

And Vanessa whispered behind me:

“Now you know.””

My hands went cold.

May you like

Because the child in the photograph was not a stranger.

It was my son.
