Chapter 5: The Secret In Ethan’s Backpack
I found Ethan sitting on the edge of his bed.
Lily was beside him, coloring quietly.
The moment I walked in, Ethan looked up.
He knew.
Kids always know when something changes.
“Dad?””
I sat beside him.
“Can I ask you something?””
He nodded.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?””
His eyes dropped.
“I tried.””
That answer hurt.
“What do you mean?””
He picked at a loose thread on his blanket.
“Every time I wanted to tell you, Vanessa would come into the room.””
I swallowed.
“She stopped you?””
He nodded.
“Sometimes.””
“Sometimes?””
Ethan looked at Lily.
Then back at me.
“Sometimes she didn’t have to.””
“What does that mean?””
His voice became smaller.
“I saw how tired you were.””
I froze.
“What?””
“You worked late. You were always worried about bills and work.””
My son looked away.
“I thought if I told you, you’d be sad.””
I felt tears building in my eyes.
A nine-year-old child was trying to protect me.
He should have been thinking about school.
Friends.
Games.
Not protecting his father from pain.
I put my hand on his shoulder.
“Ethan, you never have to protect me from the truth.””
He nodded slowly.
Then he reached into his closet.
From behind a stack of old books, he pulled out another envelope.
My heart sank.
“What is that?””
He handed it to me.
“I found it in Vanessa’s drawer.””
I opened it.
Inside were printed messages.
Text conversations.
The first one was between Vanessa and someone saved as “Mom.””
I read the first message.
“She’s becoming harder to control.””
My stomach tightened.
The next message:
“The boy is starting to notice things.””
Then:
“Don’t worry. I’ll make their father think they’re just acting out.””
I looked at Ethan.
“Where did you get this?””
“She left the drawer open.””
I kept reading.
The messages continued.
Vanessa had complained about my children.
Not normal frustrations.
Not moments of stress.
She wrote about them like they were obstacles.
“She’s too attached to him.””
“He always believes them.””
“I need him to see that they’re the problem.””
My hands started shaking.
I couldn’t understand how someone could think that way about children.
Then I saw another name.
My heart stopped.
“Daniel.””
A man I didn’t know.
The message was short.
“Everything is going according to plan.””
I stared at those words.
“Ethan…”
He looked nervous.
“What?””
“Do you know who Daniel is?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
I grabbed my phone and searched the number.
Nothing.
Unknown.
I walked downstairs and called Michael.
He answered immediately.
“Did you find something?””
“Yes.””
I explained everything.
The messages.
The name.
The plan.
There was silence.
Then Michael said:
“Brother, I need you to listen carefully.””
“What?””
“Before you married Vanessa, did she ever mention someone named Daniel?””
I thought back.
“No.””
Michael hesitated.
“Because I recognize that name.””
My stomach tightened.
“How?””
“I saw it before.””
“Where?””
“In Vanessa’s old photos.””
I stood still.
“What photos?””
“The ones she deleted after you two got married.””
I looked toward the stairs.
My children were upstairs.
My wife was gone.
And now I was discovering there was an entire part of Vanessa’s life I knew nothing about.
“Michael,” I said.
“Yeah?””
“Find out who Daniel is.””
Another pause.
Then he said:
“I already did.””
My heart started racing.
“What?””
Michael lowered his voice.
“Daniel isn’t just someone from her past.””
I gripped the phone.
“Then who is he?””
May you like
Michael answered:
“He’s the reason Vanessa came into your life.””
