Chapter 12: The Person We Never Suspected

The police left after taking statements.

But they didn’t have answers.

No fingerprints.

No witnesses.

Nothing.

Whoever broke into my house knew exactly what they were doing.

They didn’t steal jewelry.

They didn’t take electronics.

They went straight for Rachel’s evidence.

The only thing that mattered.

I sat at the kitchen table with Ethan and Lily.

Both children were quiet.

Too quiet.

“Daddy?””

I looked at Lily.

“Yes?””

“Is Vanessa coming back?””

The question hurt.

I glanced toward the window.

“No.””

She nodded.

But she didn’t look relieved.

She looked tired.

I hated that.

My children should never have had to feel this way.

Later that night, Michael and I reviewed the security footage.

We found the intruder.

A person in dark clothes.

Face covered.

Moving through the house like they knew every room.

Then the person stopped in front of the bookshelf.

My blood ran cold.

“That’s where the safe is.””

Michael nodded.

“They knew.””

The person opened the hidden compartment.

But it was empty.

Because I had already moved everything.

Then something strange happened.

The person turned toward the camera.

Not accidentally.

They looked directly at it.

Like they wanted us to see.

Then they removed their mask.

The video quality was poor.

But enough.

Michael whispered:

“No.””

I stared.

“Who is that?””

He didn’t answer.

“Michael.””

He looked at me.

“That’s Rebecca.””

Rachel’s sister.

The woman who supposedly disappeared seven years ago.

The woman connected to every secret.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice.

Older.

Calm.

“You finally found me.””

I gripped the phone.

“Rebecca.””

“Yes.””

“Why did you break into my house?””

“I didn’t.””

The video played in my mind.

“You’re lying.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked slightly.

“I was trying to stop someone else.””

“Who?””

Silence.

Then:

“Daniel.””

I looked at Michael.

“Where are you?””

“I need to see Ethan.””

My entire body tightened.

“Why?””

“Because he deserves to know the truth.””

“You don’t come near my son.””

“Listen to me.””

Her voice became urgent.

“Rachel didn’t hide evidence for herself.””

“Then why?””

“Because she knew Daniel would come after Ethan.””

I stood.

“What does Ethan have?””

“Not what.””

A pause.

“Who.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

Rebecca whispered:

“Ethan’s biological father was not the man Rachel told you.””

The room went silent.

I couldn’t move.

Michael looked at me.

“What did she say?””

I couldn’t answer.

Rebecca continued.

“Daniel Parker is Ethan’s father.””

The phone slipped slightly in my hand.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

“Rachel never told you because she was afraid.””

I looked upstairs.

At my son.

My son.

The boy I had raised.

The boy I loved.

The boy who called me Dad.

“Why would she hide that?””

“Because Daniel didn’t just want money.””

Rebecca’s voice shook.

“He wanted his son.””

My blood turned cold.

A sound came from upstairs.

Footsteps.

I turned.

Ethan stood at the top of the stairs.

He had heard everything.

His face was pale.

“Dad…”

I couldn’t speak.

He looked at me.

Then whispered:

“Is that why he’s been watching us?””

I froze.

“What did you say?””

Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.

“I saw him before.””

Michael stood up.

“When?””

Ethan looked toward the window.

“The night Mom died.””

The room went silent.

And then Ethan said the words that changed everything:

“Daniel was there when she died.””
