Chapter 2: The Secret Ethan Kept

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Vanessa’s confident expression disappeared.

Only for a moment.

But I saw it.

Fear.

A tiny crack in the person standing in front of me.

Then she laughed.

A forced laugh.

“Seriously?””

She looked at Ethan.

“You’re making things up now?””

Ethan immediately stepped closer to Lily.

“I’m not.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Are you really going to believe a nine-year-old over your wife?””

That question would have worked on me months earlier.

Maybe even weeks earlier.

But not now.

Not while Lily was still holding her cheek.

Not while Ethan looked like he had been carrying a secret too heavy for a child.

I lowered myself beside him.

“Ethan, tell me everything.””

He looked nervous.

“Dad…”

“It’s okay.””

He shook his head.

“No, it’s not.””

Those words made my chest tighten.

He looked toward the stairs.

“Can we go upstairs?””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because this is ridiculous.””

“Then you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.””

Her jaw tightened.

Ethan grabbed Lily’s hand.

We walked upstairs.

I could feel Vanessa following behind us.

My office was at the end of the hallway.

I closed the door.

For the first time since I entered the house, I felt like I could breathe.

“Okay,” I said softly.

“Tell me.””

Ethan sat on the edge of the chair.

He looked at Lily.

Then at me.

“Vanessa doesn’t like when you’re home.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She acts different when you’re here.””

I didn’t respond.

Because a part of me already knew what he meant.

“She tells us you’re too soft,” Ethan continued.

“Soft?””

“She says Lily gets everything because she’s your favorite.””

My eyes moved to my daughter.

She looked down.

I felt something break inside me.

“Did she say that to you?””

Ethan nodded.

“All the time.””

I sat down slowly.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Because she said you would think we were lying.””

I stared at him.

“And you believed that?””

He looked away.

“She said if we made you angry, she would leave and it would be our fault.””

The room felt smaller.

My own home suddenly felt unfamiliar.

I turned to Lily.

“Did Vanessa ever scare you?””

Lily hesitated.

Then she nodded.

“Sometimes.””

“Sometimes how?””

She whispered.

“She locks the pantry.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

“When Mommy isn’t home…”

She corrected herself quickly.

“When Vanessa isn’t home?””

Lily nodded.

“She says we eat too much.””

I stood up.

“No.””

My voice came out quietly.

But inside, I was breaking.

I opened my phone again.

The camera app loaded.

The living room camera.

The kitchen camera.

The hallway camera.

I checked the dates.

Most of the footage was normal.

Until I opened the kitchen recording from three days earlier.

The video loaded.

And there she was.

Vanessa.

Standing in front of Lily.

I turned the volume up.

“Put it back.””

Little Lily’s voice answered.

“But I’m hungry.””

Vanessa pointed toward the counter.

“You already ate.””

“I only had breakfast.””

“You don’t argue with me.””

Then the video cut.

The camera angle changed.

Because Vanessa had turned it away.

I stared at the screen.

She had known.

She knew exactly where the cameras were.

Ethan watched my face carefully.

“There’s more.””

I looked at him.

“What more?””

He reached into his backpack.

Slowly, he pulled out a small notebook.

My heart sank.

“What is that?””

He handed it to me.

“I wrote things down.””

I opened the first page.

The handwriting was messy.

A child’s handwriting.

But every word was clear.

“Monday. Vanessa yelled at Lily for asking for more dinner.””

“Wednesday. Vanessa threw Lily’s snack away.””

“Friday. Vanessa said Daddy loves us too much.””

My hands started shaking.

I turned the page.

And there was one sentence written much larger than the others.

A sentence that made my blood run cold.

“Vanessa told Lily if she told Daddy, she would make sure Daddy never came home.””

I looked up.

“Ethan…”

He was crying now.

“I tried to protect her.””

I pulled both children into my arms.

“I’m sorry.””

Ethan shook his head.

“You didn’t know.””

That was the worst part.

I didn’t know.

I had trusted someone with my children.

Someone who had been smiling beside me at dinner.

Someone who had kissed my forehead every morning.

Someone who had just slapped my daughter over a plate of food.

Then the bedroom door suddenly opened.

Vanessa stood there.

And she wasn’t angry anymore.

She looked terrified.

Because she had seen the notebook.

May you like

She looked directly at Ethan.

“You weren’t supposed to keep that.””
