Chapter 4: The Evidence She Left Behind

I stood in the middle of my living room, holding the phone against my ear, unable to move.

Michael’s words kept replaying in my head.

“She was trying to make them look like the problem.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was standing near the kitchen counter, watching me carefully.

Not confused.

Not worried.

Watching.

“Michael,” I said quietly, “what exactly are you saying?””

There was a long silence.

Then my brother answered.

“I’m saying you need to look at the footage from the night Lily got sick.””

I turned toward my laptop.

“Why?””

“Because I was there before you came home.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What did you see?””

Michael sighed.

“I saw Lily crying in the hallway.””

My heart dropped.

“She told me she wasn’t allowed to tell you.””

I looked at my daughter.

She was sitting on the couch beside Ethan, holding his hand.

Both of them looked exhausted.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Vanessa walked in before I could ask more questions.””

I closed my eyes.

The answer hurt.

Everyone had seen something.

Everyone except me.

Or maybe I had chosen not to see.

“I’m sending you something,” Michael said.

A few seconds later, my phone buzzed.

A video file appeared.

I opened it.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“What is that?””

I looked at her.

“Something you don’t want me to watch.””

Her face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

I pressed play.

The video showed my kitchen.

The date was one month earlier.

The night Lily had supposedly gotten sick.

At first, nothing happened.

Then Vanessa entered the frame.

She was carrying a glass of water.

Lily walked behind her.

She looked scared.

Not sick.

Scared.

“Please,” Lily whispered.

My entire body went cold.

Vanessa turned around.

“What?””

“I don’t want to.””

“Don’t make this difficult.””

Lily shook her head.

“Daddy said I can tell him.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“And what happens when Daddy gets angry?””

The little girl looked down.

“He’ll leave you.””

My breathing stopped.

Even though I was watching a recording, it felt like I was standing there.

I wanted to reach through the screen.

I wanted to protect the little girl who had been standing there alone.

Vanessa continued.

“Then what happens?””

Lily whispered.

“You’ll be alone.””

“That’s right.””

The video ended.

I couldn’t hear anything.

Not the television.

Not the rain outside.

Not even my own breathing.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You threatened my daughter.””

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

“I heard you.””

“She misunderstood.””

“She’s six.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“She exaggerates everything.””

That sentence broke something inside me.

Because I had heard it before.

Every time Ethan tried to explain.

Every time Lily looked afraid.

Every time I asked a question.

Vanessa always had the same answer.

“They’re dramatic.””

“They’re sensitive.””

“They’re confused.””

But now there was proof.

I turned to my children.

“Go upstairs for a minute.””

Ethan looked at me.

“Are you sure?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

He hesitated.

Then he took Lily’s hand and walked away.

When they disappeared upstairs, I turned back to Vanessa.

“You need to leave.””

Her eyes widened.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“You’re kicking me out because of a misunderstanding?””

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe she was still saying that.

“A misunderstanding doesn’t leave my son writing down dates because he’s afraid nobody will believe him.””

She went silent.

“You’re really choosing them over me?””

I stared at her.

“They are my children.””

“And I’m your wife.””

“You were supposed to protect them.””

Her expression hardened.

“You think you’re better than me?””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I think you know exactly what you did.””

For the first time, she looked angry.

Not defensive.

Angry.

“You have no idea what those kids are capable of.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

She grabbed her purse.

“Ask Ethan why he’s so desperate to make me look bad.””

I watched her walk toward the door.

Then she stopped.

Without turning around, she said:

“You should ask him why he was hiding something from you too.””

The door closed.

And suddenly, I wasn’t just wondering what Vanessa had done.

I was wondering what my son knew.

Because Ethan had protected Lily for weeks.

May you like

But he had also kept a secret.

And I needed to know why.
