Chapter 11: Vanessa’s Final Move
I found Vanessa sitting in a hotel lobby.
She looked different.
Not because of her clothes.
Because she looked tired.
For the first time since I met her, she looked afraid.
She noticed me approaching.
“You came.””
I sat across from her.
“You wanted me here.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked down.
“Because you need to hear everything.””
I almost laughed.
“Now you want honesty?””
Her eyes hardened.
“I know what I did was wrong.””
“Wrong?””
I stared at her.
“You hurt my children.””
“I know.””
“You made them afraid.””
“I know.””
“Then don’t sit here acting like this is about honesty.””
She swallowed.
“It isn’t.””
“Then what is it?””
She looked around the lobby.
“Survival.””
I leaned back.
“Explain.””
She took a breath.
“Daniel found me after Rachel died.””
I said nothing.
“He told me Rachel had stolen something from him.””
“The evidence.””
She nodded.
“He believed you had it.””
“And you married me to find it.””
Her silence confirmed it.
“But there’s something you don’t know.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“Daniel never trusted me.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew I cared about you.””
I almost smiled.
“You don’t get to say that.””
“I’m serious.””
“You abused my children.””
Her eyes filled.
“I know.””
“Then why?””
She looked down.
“Because Daniel threatened me.””
“With what?””
She hesitated.
“Rebecca.””
I froze.
“Rebecca is alive?””
Vanessa nodded.
My heart raced.
“What?””
“Daniel has been controlling her for years.””
“How?””
“She knows where the original money went.””
I stared at Vanessa.
“And you?””
“I was supposed to find Rachel’s evidence.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Her voice became quiet.
“Because I found something else.””
“What?””
She looked directly at me.
“I found out Rachel was protecting Ethan.””
I frowned.
“From what?””
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“From Daniel.””
The answer made no sense.
“Then why hurt him?””
Her face collapsed.
“I was scared.””
“That’s not an excuse.””
“I know.””
She looked at me.
“I kept thinking if Daniel believed I was helping him, he wouldn’t come near you.””
“That makes no sense.””
“I know.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I became the thing I was trying to protect you from.””
For a moment, I saw regret.
Real regret.
Then my phone rang.
Michael.
I answered.
His voice was urgent.
“Where are you?””
“With Vanessa.””
“Leave.””
“Why?””
“Because someone broke into your house.””
My body went cold.
“What?””
“The police are there.””
I stood immediately.
“What happened?””
Michael’s voice dropped.
“They weren’t looking for money.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“What were they looking for?””
A pause.
Then:
“The letter.””
I ran out.
When I arrived home, the front door was broken.
The living room was destroyed.
Drawers pulled open.
Pictures smashed.
But Ethan and Lily were safe.
Michael stood near the stairs.
“You need to see this.””
He held a piece of paper.
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
Rachel.
My hands shook as I took it.
It was a note.
Only one sentence.
*The person you trust most is the person who betrayed you.*
I looked around the room.
At Michael.
At Vanessa standing behind me.
At my children upstairs.
And I realized the worst part.
Someone had been inside my home.
May you like
Someone who knew exactly what they were looking for.
Someone who knew us.
