Chapter 9: The Nurse Who Disappeared
Detective Harris didn't waste another minute.
She contacted hospital security and requested that the account access logs be preserved.
Then she turned to my father.
"Did Susan Miller have any reason to know about your wife's financial affairs?""
My father shook his head.
"Not that I know of.""
"Did she know Daniel?""
"I don't think so.""
Eleanor interrupted.
"Actually, Claire mentioned Susan and Daniel arguing once.""
My father turned sharply.
"What?""
"It was shortly before Claire was admitted. She said Susan had discovered something in the hospital's medication records.""
Detective Harris leaned forward.
"Why wasn't that included in your original statement?""
"Because I didn't know about it," my father replied.
Eleanor looked uncomfortable.
"Claire asked me not to involve the police until she had more evidence.""
The detective sighed.
"Mrs. Brooks, with respect, that decision may have allowed someone to destroy evidence.""
"I understand.""
I sat quietly, trying to connect everything.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
The fake insurance policy.
My mother's mysterious hospital treatment.
And now a nurse who had disappeared.
One thing bothered me.
"Why would Susan access the records now?"" I asked.
Detective Harris considered the question.
"She may be trying to remove something.""
"Or find something," I added.
The detective looked at me.
"That's possible.""
She called the hospital again.
This time, she asked security to check whether anyone had been seen entering the medical archives.
Twenty minutes later, a security supervisor returned her call.
A woman matching Susan's description had entered the hospital at 8:17 that morning.
She had left less than ten minutes later.
"Did anyone follow her?"" Detective Harris asked.
The supervisor checked the footage.
Then he said something that made her sit upright.
"She wasn't alone.""
The detective asked him to send the footage immediately.
A few minutes later, she opened a video on her laptop.
The hospital entrance appeared.
A woman in a gray coat walked through the doors carrying a large handbag.
She glanced toward the reception desk.
Then she entered a restricted corridor.
A second person followed.
A man wearing a baseball cap and a dark jacket.
He kept his head lowered.
But when he turned toward the security camera, I recognized him.
Daniel.
My father slammed his palm against the desk.
"That bastard!""
Detective Harris paused the footage.
"Let's not jump to conclusions. We need to identify exactly what they were doing.""
She zoomed in.
The woman handed Daniel a small envelope.
He opened it.
Then he gave her something in return.
A key.
They exchanged a few words before separating.
My father leaned closer.
"Where did they go?""
The security supervisor had tracked their movements through several cameras.
Susan entered the medical archives.
Daniel went to the basement parking garage.
Ten minutes later, both disappeared.
Detective Harris called for officers to search the hospital.
But the next development came from Eleanor.
She had been examining the original trust documents while we watched the footage.
Suddenly, she stopped.
"Michael.""
He turned.
"What?""
"Look at this.""
She placed a photocopy beside the hospital recording.
It was an old payment authorization from one of Daniel's companies.
The date was eight years earlier.
The recipient was Susan Miller.
The amount was $75,000.
My father stared.
"Why would Daniel pay a nurse seventy-five thousand dollars?""
Eleanor shook her head.
"I don't know.""
I looked at the date again.
It was three months before my mother died.
"Could it have been payment for changing her medication?"" I asked.
Nobody answered.
Then Detective Harris's phone rang.
She listened.
Her expression became increasingly serious.
"Where?""
A pause.
"Don't approach her.""
Another pause.
"Send the address.""
She ended the call.
"We found Susan.""
"Where?"" my father asked.
"At a motel outside Atlanta. An officer recognized her vehicle from the hospital footage.""
"Are you arresting her?""
"Not yet. We need to speak with her first.""
My father stood up.
"I'm coming.""
"No," Detective Harris replied firmly.
"You and Ryan stay here. If she knows we're investigating, she may disappear again.""
She left with her partner.
The next two hours were unbearable.
My father paced the office.
I sat by the window, replaying my mother's recording in my head.
Eventually, my phone buzzed.
An unknown number.
A text message.
Ryan, this is Susan Miller. Your mother asked me to protect you.
I stood up.
"Dad.""
He turned.
I showed him the message.
His face went pale.
Another message appeared.
I know what Vanessa did today. I also know why she needed you out of the house.
Then came a photograph.
It showed my mother sitting in her hospital bed.
She was holding a piece of paper.
On it was a handwritten name.
*DANIEL CARTER.*
I typed a reply.
Where are you?
The answer came almost immediately.
I can't meet you while your father is there.
I looked at Michael.
He was watching me.
"What does she want?""
I hesitated.
Then another message arrived.
Your mother wasn't killed because she discovered Daniel's theft. She was killed because she discovered who Daniel was protecting.
My fingers went numb.
I typed:
Who?
The three dots appeared.
Disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Finally, the answer came.
Your father.
I stared at the screen.
My father stepped closer.
"What did she say?""
I couldn't speak.
He took my phone.
When he read the message, his expression changed.
"That's a lie.""
Another message arrived.
If you want the truth, come to the old church on Peachtree Street tomorrow at 10 a.m. Come alone.
My father immediately shook his head.
"You're not going anywhere.""
I looked at him.
"Why would she say you were involved?""
"I don't know!""
"Then why is she afraid to meet you?""
He grabbed my shoulders.
"Ryan, listen to me. Whatever happened between your mother and me, I never wanted her dead.""
I stepped away.
"That's not the same as saying you didn't have something to do with it.""
His face collapsed.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Detective Harris called.
My father answered.
"Did you find her?""
The detective's voice was tense.
"Yes. But Susan is refusing to give a formal statement until she speaks to Ryan.""
"Why?""
There was a pause.
Then Detective Harris replied:
"Because she claims your wife left her a second recording.""
My father gripped the phone.
"What recording?""
The detective lowered her voice.
"One that supposedly proves Michael Carter was present the night Claire died.""
And before my father could respond, she added:
"Mr. Carter, we also found something in Susan's motel room.""
"What?""
"A photograph of you standing outside Claire's hospital room.""
The photograph was dated the night before your wife died.
But the timestamp on the back showed something impossible.
*Michael Carter had entered the hospital at 11:48 p.m.*
My father stared at the phone.
"I wasn't there that night," he whispered.
Detective Harris was silent for a moment.
Then she said:
"Mr. Carter, someone may have been using your identity.""
And suddenly, I understood why my mother had been so terrified.
May you like
Whoever had arranged her final days hadn't just wanted her silenced.
They had been preparing to make sure that, when the truth finally emerged, my own father would look like her murderer.
