Chapter 14: The Hearing That Exposed Everything

The emergency hearing began three days later.

Daniel arrived at the courthouse wearing a navy suit and a silver tie.

He looked calm.

Almost amused.

Vanessa sat beside him.

She had abandoned her earlier elegant appearance. Her hair was pulled tightly behind her head, and she kept whispering into Daniel's ear.

Margaret Lewis sat behind them.

My father's younger brother noticed us entering.

He smiled.

"Michael.""

My father didn't respond.

Daniel turned toward me.

"Ryan. You've grown up.""

I stared at him.

"Don't talk to me.""

His smile disappeared.

"Still emotional, I see.""

My father stepped forward.

"Stay away from my son.""

Daniel laughed.

"Your son?""

The words were deliberately cruel.

My father clenched his jaw.

"He's my son in every way that matters.""

Daniel shrugged.

"That's a touching sentiment. Unfortunately, the law may disagree.""

Eleanor placed a hand on my father's arm.

"Don't engage with him.""

We entered the courtroom.

Daniel's attorney argued that the family trust should be placed under temporary guardianship because I was supposedly unable to manage the inheritance.

He presented the forged will.

He presented the document claiming I'd voluntarily surrendered my rights.

He even presented a statement alleging that my father had pressured me into rejecting Daniel's biological relationship.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

Then Daniel's attorney called me to testify.

I walked to the witness stand.

"Ryan Carter," he began, "you are aware that Daniel Carter is your biological father?""

"Yes.""

"And you understand that he has a legitimate interest in your welfare?""

I looked directly at Daniel.

"No.""

The attorney raised an eyebrow.

"Why not?""

"Because he tried to frame me for attacking my stepmother. He tried to steal my father's business. And he helped arrange the circumstances surrounding my mother's death.""

Daniel shook his head dramatically.

"These are outrageous accusations.""

The attorney continued.

"Isn't it true that you have never had a relationship with Mr. Daniel Carter?""

"That's true.""

"Then how can you possibly know his intentions?""

I took a breath.

"Because I watched the recordings.""

Eleanor stood.

"Your Honor, we'd like to submit the preserved security footage and associated forensic records.""

Daniel's attorney objected.

The judge allowed the evidence to be reviewed, subject to authentication.

The courtroom screen lit up.

First came the footage of Vanessa ripping open her blouse.

A few people in the gallery whispered.

Then came the office recording.

Daniel placing the insurance documents on my father's desk.

Vanessa discussing the two-million-dollar policy.

The conversation about my father's brakes.

Daniel's face remained expressionless.

But when the recording showed him looking directly into the camera, his attorney leaned toward him.

Next came the backup footage.

The recording of Daniel wearing my father's jacket and entering my mother's hospital room.

My father stared at the screen.

His hands trembled.

The judge paused the video.

"Mr. Carter, do you recognize the individual?""

My father stood.

"Yes. That's my brother.""

Daniel's attorney objected.

The judge dismissed the objection and asked for the next exhibit.

Detective Harris entered the courtroom carrying a sealed evidence box.

Inside were the forged financial documents recovered from Daniel's storage unit.

The handwriting examiner's report.

The hospital access records.

And the original medication authorization.

The examiner had concluded that my signature on the replacement will was forged.

The hospital records also established that the medication order had been entered using credentials associated with Daniel's unauthorized access.

Daniel finally stopped smiling.

His attorney whispered urgently to him.

Then Eleanor presented the original trust agreement.

It showed that my mother had transferred the beneficial interest in the forty-seven-million-dollar property to me years earlier.

The trust was irrevocable.

Daniel had no authority over it.

The judge examined the document.

"Mr. Carter, why did you file a petition claiming control over property you do not legally own?""

Daniel's attorney stood.

"My client believed there were grounds to challenge the transfer.""

"On what grounds?""

"Newly discovered biological information.""

The judge looked at the DNA report.

"Biological paternity does not automatically grant control over an adult child's assets.""

Daniel's face reddened.

Then Eleanor made her final request.

"Your Honor, we have one additional witness.""

The courtroom doors opened.

A young woman entered wearing a dark blue dress.

Emily.

I stood immediately.

She walked toward the witness area, looking frightened but determined.

Daniel turned around.

For the first time, I saw genuine panic on his face.

Emily took the oath.

Eleanor asked her to explain why she had agreed to testify.

Emily looked directly at Daniel.

"Because he came to my adoptive parents' house and threatened them.""

Daniel's attorney stood.

"Objection. This is hearsay.""

The judge instructed Emily to describe only what she had personally witnessed.

She nodded.

"Daniel told me that my biological mother had left behind valuable property. He said I could receive millions if I helped him challenge Ryan's inheritance.""

She paused.

"Then he showed me a document.""

Eleanor placed a photograph on the screen.

It showed a letter with Emily's signature.

Emily shook her head.

"I never signed that.""

Daniel's attorney looked uncomfortable.

Emily continued.

"He told me that if I refused, he'd make sure my adoptive parents lost everything.""

The judge leaned forward.

"Do you have any evidence of this threat?""

Emily reached into her bag.

She removed a small digital recorder.

"My adoptive father recorded the conversation.""

The judge allowed the recording to be reviewed.

Daniel's voice filled the courtroom.

"Your brother has something that belongs to me. Help me get control of it, and you'll both be rewarded.""

Then came another sentence.

"Your mother should have kept her mouth shut. I gave her every chance.""

The courtroom went completely silent.

Daniel stood abruptly.

"That's been edited!""

Detective Harris rose.

"Mr. Carter, we have the original device and forensic verification.""

Daniel looked toward Vanessa.

She was staring at the floor.

Then she did something unexpected.

She stood up.

"Your Honor, I need to speak.""

Daniel grabbed her wrist.

"Sit down.""

She pulled away.

"No.""

The judge allowed her to address the court.

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

"Daniel told me Michael's accident was supposed to kill him.""

My father closed his eyes.

Vanessa continued.

"He promised me the insurance money. He promised me the house. He promised me everything.""

Daniel whispered furiously.

"Shut your mouth.""

But Vanessa kept talking.

"He also told me that Claire's death was an accident. I believed him.""

Detective Harris immediately requested that Vanessa's statement be preserved.

The judge ordered the trust protected from any transfer pending the investigation and referred the alleged fraud for further proceedings.

But as officers approached Daniel, he turned toward me.

His expression was no longer amused.

It was furious.

"You think you've won?"" he shouted.

An officer took his arm.

Daniel leaned toward me.

"You still don't know what your mother did with the original money.""

Then he was escorted out.

My father took my hand.

Emily stood beside us.

For the first time, I felt that our family might finally have a chance.

But outside the courthouse, Detective Harris received a call.

She listened for several seconds.

Then she turned toward us.

"There's a problem.""

"What now?"" my father asked.

"Daniel's storage unit contained a second insurance policy.""

She looked at Michael.

"This one has a different beneficiary.""

My father frowned.

"Who?""

Detective Harris looked at me.

May you like

"Ryan Carter.""

And the policy had been created just six days before the day Vanessa staged her attack.
