Chapter 1: The Lie That Destroyed Everything

The sound of my father's hand striking my face was so loud that even Vanessa stopped crying for a second.

I stumbled backward, my shoulder hitting the hallway wall. My cheek burned, my ears rang, and I stared at the man who had raised me.

"How could you do this to my wife?"" Michael shouted.

"Dad, I didn't touch her!""

Vanessa stood behind him, clutching the remains of her torn blouse. Several buttons lay scattered across the hardwood floor. Her mascara had run down her cheeks, and she was breathing as though she'd just escaped something terrible.

But I knew exactly what had happened.

She had done it herself.

Five minutes earlier, everything had been normal.

I was sitting on the living room couch, scrolling through my phone, when my stepmother walked in wearing a cream-colored blouse and black trousers.

Vanessa was forty-two, beautiful in the carefully maintained way of someone who spent more time looking in mirrors than looking at people. She had married my father three years earlier, eighteen months after my mother's death.

At first, I'd tried to accept her.

I'd even called her family.

That changed when she started treating me like an unwanted tenant in my own home.

"Ryan, we need to talk," she said.

I looked up.

"About what?""

She glanced toward the hallway, making sure my father wasn't nearby.

Then she sat opposite me.

"Your father and I have been discussing the future.""

"Okay.""

"You're eighteen now. You're old enough to stand on your own feet.""

I put my phone down.

"What's that supposed to mean?""

She folded her hands.

"It means you should move out.""

I laughed nervously, thinking she was joking.

"Move out? Where am I supposed to go?""

"That's not my problem.""

"Vanessa, this is my father's house.""

Her smile disappeared.

"Your father is my husband. And this house is where we're building our future.""

"I've lived here since I was born.""

"Exactly. You've had eighteen years. Don't you think it's time you stopped depending on him?""

I stood up.

"Does Dad know you're asking me this?""

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she leaned forward.

"Listen carefully, Ryan. You need to tell Michael that moving out was your idea. Tell him you want independence. Don't make this ugly.""

I stared at her.

"Why would I lie to my father?""

Her expression turned cold.

"Because you have no idea what you're interfering with.""

Before I could ask what she meant, she stood up.

Then she did something that made my stomach drop.

She grabbed the front of her blouse with both hands and ripped it open.

Buttons flew across the room.

I froze.

"What the hell are you doing?""

Vanessa stepped backward, raised both hands, and screamed at the top of her lungs.

"MICHAEL! HELP ME!""

I barely had time to process what was happening.

My father came running from the garage.

"What's going on?""

Vanessa threw herself against the wall.

"YOUR SON! HE TRIED TO ATTACK ME!""

"What?""

"He grabbed me! I told him to stop!""

"That's a lie!"" I shouted.

My father looked at her torn blouse.

Then he looked at me.

His face changed.

"Ryan, what did you do?""

"Nothing! She ripped her own shirt!""

Vanessa began sobbing.

"Michael, please. I was terrified. I didn't know what he was going to do.""

My father crossed the room and slapped me.

Now, standing against the hallway wall, I could barely recognize him.

"Get out of my house!"" he screamed.

"Dad, please listen!""

"Don't you dare call me Dad!""

Vanessa lowered her face, hiding what I thought was a smile.

I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand.

Then I looked above the living room doorway.

A small black security camera was mounted near the ceiling.

"Check the camera," I said.

My father frowned.

"What?""

"The security camera. It records everything.""

For the first time, Vanessa stopped crying.

Her fingers tightened around the torn fabric.

"Michael, don't listen to him," she whispered.

"He's trying to manipulate you.""

But my father had already taken out his phone.

He opened the security application and found the recording.

We watched Vanessa walk toward me.

We watched her demand that I leave.

We watched me refuse.

And then we watched her deliberately tear open her own blouse.

Nobody spoke.

My father's face drained of color.

He replayed the moment twice.

"Vanessa," he finally whispered.

"You staged this?""

She immediately reached for his arm.

"Michael, I can explain.""

"You accused my son of attacking you.""

"I was desperate!""

"Desperate for what?""

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

I touched my swollen cheek.

"Dad, please keep watching.""

He looked at me.

"What do you mean?""

I pointed toward the recording timeline.

"There are motion alerts from last night. I saw them this morning, but I didn't have time to check.""

My father tapped the previous night's recording.

A timestamp appeared.

2:13 A.M.

The footage showed Vanessa entering his home office.

Thirty seconds later, a man followed her inside.

My father leaned closer to the screen.

"Who is that?""

I looked at the stranger.

Then I heard my stepmother whisper something that made my blood run cold.

"Michael, turn it off.""

May you like

But the recording had already started playing.

And the stranger was carrying a folder with my father's name on it.
