Chapter 12: The Blood Test That Changed My Family Forever
Nobody spoke for nearly a minute.
I sat staring at the handwritten note.
My biological father.
For eighteen years, I'd believed Michael Carter was my father.
He had taught me to ride a bicycle, attended my school performances, and held my hand at my mother's funeral.
He had been the only father I'd ever known.
Now a nurse was telling me that everything might have been a lie.
I looked at Michael.
"Dad?""
He didn't answer.
"Dad, look at me.""
He finally raised his eyes.
"Ryan, I don't care what that woman says. You're my son.""
"But is it true?""
His lips trembled.
"I don't know.""
Susan reached across the table.
"Claire loved you both. She didn't want this to hurt either of you.""
I pulled my hand away.
"Then why didn't she tell me?""
"Because she was afraid Daniel would use the truth against you.""
Detective Harris interrupted.
"We're not going to establish paternity through an old handwritten note. We need evidence.""
She turned to Susan.
"Do you have anything else?""
Susan nodded.
"Claire left a sealed envelope with me. It contains a copy of an original DNA test.""
My father stood.
"Where is it?""
Susan looked down.
"I gave it to Daniel.""
"Why?""
"He threatened my daughter.""
The room went silent.
Susan wiped her cheeks.
"She was seventeen at the time. Daniel sent me photographs of her school and told me he knew where she lived. He said if I didn't cooperate, she would suffer.""
Detective Harris's expression hardened.
"Did you report the threats?""
"No. I was terrified.""
"Where is your daughter now?""
"Safe. She's living with relatives in North Carolina.""
My father sat down again.
"How long have you been helping Daniel?""
Susan hesitated.
"Since Claire's death.""
I stared at her.
"All this time?""
"I thought I could protect my daughter by doing what he wanted. But when Ryan turned eighteen, Claire's instructions became active. I realized I couldn't keep hiding.""
Detective Harris asked, "What exactly did you do for Daniel?""
Susan described how she had helped him access certain hospital records and identify which documents could be removed without immediately triggering an audit.
She admitted that she had accepted money.
She also admitted that she had given Daniel information about my mother's condition.
But she insisted she had never administered the medication that caused my mother's death.
"I know what I did was wrong," she said.
"But I didn't kill Claire.""
My father looked at her.
"Then help us find the truth.""
Susan nodded.
"I will.""
Detective Harris arranged for her to provide a formal statement.
Before we left, she gave me a small piece of paper.
It contained a bank name and an account number.
"Your mother told me to give you this when you were old enough.""
"What is it?""
"The account that received the original DNA test results.""
I looked at my father.
He was staring at the floor.
That afternoon, Eleanor arranged an appointment with an independent laboratory.
My father and I both agreed to provide DNA samples.
Not because I wanted to replace him.
But because I needed to know the truth.
Three days later, we returned to Eleanor's office.
She had the results in a sealed envelope.
My father sat beside me.
His hands were folded tightly.
Eleanor opened the envelope.
She read the first page.
Then she looked at us.
"Michael, the test confirms that you are not Ryan's biological father.""
My chest tightened.
I looked at the floor.
My father reached for my hand.
"Ryan...""
I pulled away.
Not because I hated him.
Because I needed a moment to breathe.
Eleanor continued.
"The test also identifies a biological relationship between Ryan and another individual whose DNA profile was submitted to the laboratory years ago.""
My father frowned.
"Who?""
Eleanor turned the page.
The name appeared.
*Daniel Carter.*
I felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath me.
My father stared at the paper.
"No.""
Eleanor nodded slowly.
"The laboratory's records indicate that Daniel is Ryan's biological father.""
I stood up.
"No. That's not possible.""
Eleanor spoke gently.
"The results are conclusive.""
I walked toward the window.
Daniel.
The man who had been trying to steal my father's company.
The man who had helped Vanessa frame me.
The man who had apparently arranged my mother's death.
He was my biological father.
My father remained seated.
His eyes were wet.
"Ryan, please.""
I turned toward him.
"Did you know?""
He shook his head immediately.
"Never.""
"Did Mom tell you?""
"No. I swear.""
Eleanor placed another document on the table.
"This is an original letter from Claire, addressed to Michael. She instructed me to release it only if the DNA results confirmed Daniel's paternity.""
My father opened it.
His hands trembled.
Michael,
I need you to forgive me for something I should have told you years ago.
Before we were married, Daniel and I had a brief relationship. It ended before you and I built our life together.
When I discovered I was pregnant, Daniel wanted nothing to do with the responsibility. You knew I was pregnant, and you chose to raise Ryan as your own.
I believed the past was behind us.
But Daniel never forgot.
When he discovered that Ryan was his biological son, he began using that secret to threaten me. He said he would destroy our family unless I helped him gain control of the business.
My father stopped reading.
He looked at me.
"I knew there was a possibility," he whispered.
"But I never wanted you to feel anything other than my son.""
I couldn't speak.
The letter continued.
Michael, there is one thing I need you to understand.
Daniel doesn't want Ryan because he loves him.
He wants him because Ryan is the legal heir to the Carter family trust. And if Daniel can prove his biological relationship, he believes he can challenge the inheritance arrangements.
Eleanor pointed to the next paragraph.
But there is another secret. Daniel believes Ryan's inheritance comes from the business.
It doesn't.
My father frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Eleanor turned the page.
The letter ended with a sentence that none of us understood.
The real inheritance is connected to the land your father bought before he died. The property Daniel has been trying to acquire for years.
I looked at Eleanor.
"What property?""
She opened another folder.
Inside was an old deed.
It listed a parcel of land outside Atlanta.
My grandfather's property.
The same land Daniel had attempted to purchase several times through different companies.
Eleanor pointed to the current ownership information.
"Your grandfather placed this property in an irrevocable trust. Your mother transferred the beneficial interest to Ryan before she died.""
My father stared at the document.
"How much is it worth?""
Eleanor took a breath.
"Based on a recent development proposal, approximately forty-seven million dollars.""
I sat down.
Forty-seven million.
Suddenly, Daniel's obsession made sense.
But Eleanor wasn't finished.
She pulled out a final document.
"This is a notice filed yesterday.""
My father read it.
His expression changed instantly.
"What is this?""
Eleanor looked at me.
"Daniel has filed a legal petition claiming that, as Ryan's biological father, he has the right to control the trust until Ryan reaches the age of twenty-one.""
I frowned.
"But I'm eighteen. The trust belongs to me.""
"That's what we're going to establish in court.""
My father stood.
"Can he take it?""
Eleanor shook her head.
"Not if we prove the original trust documents are valid and the petition was obtained through fraudulent representations.""
Then her phone rang.
She answered.
Listened.
And slowly stood up.
"Where is he now?""
A pause.
"Don't let him leave.""
She ended the call and looked at us.
"Daniel just arrived at the courthouse.""
"Why?"" my father asked.
Eleanor picked up her coat.
"Because he's requesting an emergency hearing.""
I looked at the documents again.
Daniel had spent eighteen years hiding the truth about my birth.
He had helped destroy my mother's life.
He had tried to frame me.
And now he wanted control of the inheritance she had fought so hard to protect.
But as Eleanor gathered the paperwork, my phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
It contained a photograph of my mother holding a newborn baby.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten sentence:
*Ryan isn't the only child Claire gave birth to.*
And beneath it was a name.
*EMILY CARTER.*

My mother had another child.
And according to the message, Daniel knew exactly where she was.
