Chapter 13: The Sister My Mother Had Hidden From Me

I read the message three times.

*Ryan isn't the only child Claire gave birth to.*

Beneath it was the photograph of a newborn baby.

My mother was holding the child in a hospital bed, smiling weakly at whoever had taken the picture.

On the back, someone had written a name.

Emily Carter.

I turned toward Eleanor.

"Who is Emily?""

Her face went pale.

My father took the photograph from my hand.

He stared at it for several seconds before shaking his head.

"No. This can't be happening.""

I looked at him.

"You know who she is?""

He swallowed.

"Your mother told me she had lost a baby before you were born.""

"Lost?""

"She said the child died shortly after delivery. I never saw a birth certificate. I never questioned her because she was devastated.""

Eleanor slowly closed the folder.

"Michael, I think there's something you need to know.""

My father looked at her.

"What?""

"Claire contacted me about Emily six months before she died.""

I stepped closer.

"Why didn't you tell us?""

"Because Claire specifically instructed me not to disclose anything until Ryan turned eighteen and the trust was activated.""

"Was Emily alive?""

Eleanor nodded.

"Yes.""

My stomach tightened.

"Where is she?""

Eleanor hesitated.

"She was placed with another family shortly after birth. The adoption was arranged privately, and the records were sealed.""

My father looked stunned.

"Why would Claire give away her own child?""

"She didn't have a choice," Eleanor replied.

She opened another file and removed a letter.

"This is what Claire told me.""

The letter was dated twenty years earlier.

Eleanor,

Daniel knows about the pregnancy. He has threatened to expose my relationship with him and destroy Michael's life if I refuse to cooperate.

He says the baby will be raised by people he chooses. He insists that I will never see her again.

I cannot allow him to use another child against this family.

Please help me make sure she is safe.

My hands began trembling.

"Daniel arranged her adoption?""

Eleanor nodded.

"That's what Claire believed.""

My father looked physically ill.

"All these years, my brother knew he had another child?""

"Yes.""

I couldn't understand it.

Daniel had known about Emily.

He had known about me.

He had spent years manipulating my mother, stealing from our family, and destroying the people who stood in his way.

"Where did the photograph come from?"" I asked.

Eleanor examined the back.

There was a small handwritten address beneath Emily's name.

It belonged to a residential neighborhood outside Savannah.

Detective Harris, who had been reviewing the new information, immediately contacted her department.

"We'll verify the address before anyone goes there.""

My father nodded.

But I couldn't sit still.

"If Emily is alive, she deserves to know.""

Detective Harris looked at me.

"Agreed. But we need to approach this carefully. We don't know who sent you that photograph.""

She asked her technical team to trace the message.

Within an hour, they identified the sender.

It was a prepaid phone registered under a false name.

However, the photograph itself contained metadata showing it had been scanned recently at a location in Atlanta.

A private storage facility.

The same facility where Daniel's vehicle had been discovered.

Detective Harris called for officers to return.

Meanwhile, Eleanor searched the adoption records.

Eventually, she found a sealed court reference.

The adoptive parents were listed as Thomas and Rebecca Miller.

Their daughter had been registered as Emily Miller.

I looked at my father.

"She might be my sister.""

He nodded slowly.

"If Claire's letter is true.""

An hour later, Detective Harris received confirmation.

Emily Miller was alive.

She was twenty years old and living in Savannah.

She had no criminal record, no known connection to Daniel, and no idea that her biological family had been searching for her.

Detective Harris arranged a confidential meeting through an attorney representing the adoption records.

We weren't going to surprise her.

She deserved the choice to meet us.

The following morning, my phone rang.

An unfamiliar woman spoke.

"Is this Ryan Carter?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Emily Miller. Someone contacted me yesterday about my biological mother.""

I couldn't breathe.

"Your mother was named Claire?""

There was a long silence.

"Yes.""

I sat down.

"Then I think I'm your brother.""

She began crying.

"My parents always told me I was adopted. They said my biological mother had died shortly after giving birth.""

I looked at my father.

He had tears running down his face.

"She didn't forget you," I said.

"She kept your photograph.""

Emily was quiet.

Then she asked:

"Why are you contacting me now?""

I told her about Daniel.

About the insurance policy.

About my mother's final letter.

About the family trust.

I didn't hide anything.

When I finished, Emily spoke softly.

"My adoptive father received a strange visitor last month.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who?""

"An older man. He said he was a relative and wanted to discuss my biological family.""

"Did he give you his name?""

"Daniel.""

My father stood up.

Emily continued.

"He told my parents that my biological mother had stolen something valuable from him. He said I might be entitled to part of an inheritance.""

I closed my eyes.

Daniel had found her.

"Emily, did you meet him?""

"No. My father refused to let him inside.""

"Good.""

Then she said something that made my heart stop.

"He left a package.""

"What package?""

"A copy of my birth certificate. And a photograph of my mother.""

I gripped the phone.

"Can you describe the photograph?""

"It showed her holding me in the hospital.""

I looked at the picture on the table.

It was the same one.

Then Emily whispered:

"On the back, there was a message.""

"What did it say?""

She took a breath.

"It said, 'Your brother is next. Don't let him trust Michael.''"

My father slowly sat down.

Before I could respond, Emily added:

May you like

"Ryan, I think Daniel is coming to Savannah.""

And suddenly, the search for my sister had become a race to keep her alive.
