Chapter 8: The Woman Behind the Hospital Window

Dad stared at the location on his phone.

It was an address outside Atlanta, nearly an hour from our house.

Daniel arrived twenty minutes later.

When Dad showed him the message, his expression changed immediately.

"Absolutely not.""

"That's my wife.""

"And it could be a trap.""

"Rebecca says Sarah is alive.""

"Then we verify the address before doing anything.""

Dad paced across the living room.

"What if Robert gets there first?""

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"We'll contact the authorities and arrange a controlled visit.""

Dad looked at me.

"Lily, sweetheart, you're staying with Aunt Rachel.""

I grabbed his hand.

"No!""

He knelt.

"Listen to me. I need to make sure you're safe.""

"But Mommy asked for me.""

His eyes filled.

"I know.""

"I want to see her.""

He hugged me.

"And I want that more than anything. But I won't let anyone put you in danger.""

Aunt Rachel arrived shortly afterward.

She was my father's older sister, a kind woman who had always treated me like her own daughter.

She brought a small suitcase and a warm coat.

"Come on, sweetheart," she said gently.

"We'll have pancakes in the morning.""

Before I left, Dad handed me a photograph.

It showed my mother holding me in a hospital blanket.

"Keep this with you.""

I kissed the photograph.

"Bring Mommy home, Daddy.""

He kissed my forehead.

"I promise I'll do everything I can.""

At 8:40 the next morning, Dad and Daniel arrived at the address.

Two officers accompanied them.

The building was a small private rehabilitation center surrounded by tall trees and a black iron fence.

A woman at reception checked their names.

"Mr. Marcus?""

"Yes.""

"Someone has been expecting you.""

She led them down a quiet hallway.

The smell of disinfectant filled the air.

At the end of the corridor was a room with a large window.

Dad stopped.

Inside, a woman sat beside the window, reading a book.

Her hair was shorter.

Her face was thinner.

But he recognized her immediately.

"Sarah.""

The book slipped from her hands.

She stood slowly.

For a moment, she simply stared through the glass.

Then she opened the door.

"Marcus?""

Dad couldn't move.

He had imagined this moment a thousand times.

In every dream, Sarah ran into his arms.

But now she stood several feet away, uncertain.

He took one trembling step.

"Sarah, it's me.""

She covered her mouth.

"Oh my God.""

Dad reached for her.

She collapsed against his chest.

He wrapped both arms around her and began crying.

"I thought you were dead.""

Sarah held his face.

"I thought I'd never see you again.""

He kissed her forehead.

"Where have you been?""

Her expression changed.

"I don't remember everything.""

Dad stepped back slightly.

"What do you remember?""

She looked toward Daniel.

"After the hospital, Rebecca brought me here. I was confused. I couldn't remember the accident. Sometimes I couldn't even remember my own name.""

Dad's voice cracked.

"Why didn't you call me?""

"I tried.""

"Who stopped you?""

Sarah looked down.

"Rebecca said it wasn't safe.""

Daniel interrupted gently.

"Sarah, we found your original hospital records. We also found a message you left for Marcus.""

She nodded.

"I remember recording something. I don't remember what I said.""

Dad took her hands.

"Did Vanessa visit you?""

Sarah closed her eyes.

"Yes.""

"When?""

"Several times during the first few weeks.""

"What did she want?""

Sarah's fingers began trembling.

"She wanted me to sign something.""

Dad went still.

"What?""

"She said it was paperwork to protect Lily. But I didn't trust her.""

"Did you sign it?""

"No.""

Sarah looked toward the window.

"Then Robert came.""

Daniel exchanged a glance with Dad.

"Robert Evans?""

Sarah nodded.

"He said I was going to ruin everything. He told me Marcus would lose the company, Lily would lose her inheritance, and my daughter would grow up without either parent.""

Dad clenched his jaw.

"Did he threaten you?""

"He showed me a photograph.""

"What photograph?""

Sarah looked directly at him.

"A picture of Lily sleeping.""

Dad's face turned white.

"He knew where she was?""

Sarah nodded.

"That's why I stayed quiet.""

Daniel took out his phone.

"Sarah, we need to tell the officers everything. Robert has threatened Lily directly.""

Sarah began crying.

"Is she safe?""

"She's with my sister.""

"Please bring her to me.""

Dad held her hands.

"I will.""

Then Sarah suddenly pulled away.

"Marcus, wait.""

She looked toward the door.

"There is something else.""

"What?""

She walked to a small cabinet and removed a brown envelope.

"I kept this because I knew one day you'd find me.""

Dad opened it.

Inside were several photographs and a handwritten statement.

One photograph showed Vanessa standing outside the hospital.

Another showed Robert entering the same building.

But the third photograph made Dad stop breathing.

It showed Vanessa holding a newborn baby.

On the back was a handwritten note:

*THE CHILD ROBERT CLAIMS IS HIS WAS NEVER HIS.*

Dad looked at Sarah.

"What does this mean?""

Sarah sat down.

"Robert has been lying about his family for years.""

Daniel examined the photograph.

"Who is the baby?""

Sarah's eyes filled.

"Vanessa's first child.""

Dad frowned.

"She told me Brianna was from her previous marriage.""

"That was another lie.""

Sarah took a deep breath.

"Marcus, Robert is not just Vanessa's brother. He's the person who helped her create the false documents, and he's been using those children to hide money from the company.""

Dad looked stunned.

"Why would he do that?""

Sarah pointed to a second document.

It was a copy of a birth certificate.

The father's name had been altered.

Daniel read it carefully.

Then he looked at Dad.

"Marcus, we need a DNA test.""

Sarah nodded.

"Because Robert isn't the only person whose identity has been falsified.""

Before Dad could ask another question, an alarm sounded in the hallway.

The receptionist rushed past the room.

"Security! Someone has entered the building!""

Sarah grabbed Dad's arm.

"Marcus, it's him.""

Dad turned toward the door.

"Who?""

May you like

She whispered:

"Robert.""
