Chapter 1: The Shoes That Broke My Father's Heart
"Put those shoes back! You're not worth another dollar!""
My stepmother shouted those words in the middle of an Atlanta shopping mall while my seven-year-old hands clutched a shoebox I had been too afraid to ask for.
I didn't know it then, but the broken shoes on my feet would lead my father to uncover a secret that could destroy his entire marriage.
My name is Lily Marcus. I was seven years old, and my mother had been dead for three years.
At least, that's what everyone had told me.
That Saturday morning, my stepmother, Vanessa, announced that we were going shopping.
"Get your jackets, Brianna and Tyler!"" she called from the front door.
"We're going to make you two look fabulous.""
My stepsister, Brianna, was nine. My stepbrother, Tyler, was six.
They rushed downstairs, screaming with excitement.
I followed them quietly.
"Can I come too?"" I asked.
Vanessa looked at me as though she'd forgotten I existed.
"Unfortunately, yes. Your father specifically said you had to come.""
I smiled anyway.
I thought maybe she would buy me something.
My sneakers had belonged to me since the previous winter. The white fabric had turned gray, the rubber soles were separating, and a hole near my right big toe had grown so large that I could wiggle three toes through it.
Every morning, I squeezed my feet into them and hoped nobody noticed.
At the mall, Vanessa took Brianna straight into a designer clothing store.
"Pick whatever you want, sweetheart.""
Brianna grabbed dresses, handbags, and three pairs of expensive sneakers.
Tyler received a brand-new gaming console, several action figures, and a remote-controlled car.
"Mommy, can I get this too?"" he asked, pointing at a large toy robot.
"Of course, baby. Anything for my little prince.""
I stood beside the shopping bags.
After nearly two hours, Vanessa had spent almost $900.
Then we passed a shoe store.
A pair of blue sneakers caught my eye. They were simple, with white laces and a little silver star on the side.
The price tag read $24.99.
I stopped walking.
"Vanessa?""
She kept looking at her phone.
"What?""
"Could I please have those shoes?""
She glanced down.
"What shoes?""
I pointed toward the display.
"Those blue ones. My shoes have holes, and they hurt when I walk.""
Brianna immediately laughed.
"Mommy, look! Her toes are sticking out!""
"That's enough, Brianna," I whispered.
Vanessa examined the shoes and then looked at me.
"Twenty-five dollars?""
I nodded.
"Please. I'll take really good care of them.""
She laughed without humor.
"Put those shoes back! You're not worth another dollar!""
The saleswoman behind the counter looked uncomfortable.
"Ma'am, they're actually on sale.""
Vanessa turned toward her.
"I wasn't asking for your opinion.""
Then she snatched the shoebox from my hands and placed it back on the shelf.
"Your father already wastes enough money feeding you. I'm not spending more on things you don't deserve.""
I lowered my eyes.
Brianna leaned closer.
"Maybe Daddy doesn't love you as much as he loves us.""
"Stop," I whispered.
"What did you say?"" Vanessa demanded.
"Nothing.""
She bought herself a $180 handbag before we left.
I watched the cashier put it into a beautiful shopping bag.
Nobody asked whether my feet hurt.
When we returned home, Vanessa handed me the shopping bags.
"Take these upstairs.""
They were heavy. One bag slipped from my fingers, and a box of Brianna's new shoes hit the floor.
Vanessa spun around.
"Are you stupid? Those cost more than everything you own!""
"I'm sorry.""
"Pick them up. And don't touch anything else.""
I carried the bags upstairs, then came back down to clean the kitchen.
At 6:30 p.m., I was kneeling on the floor, scrubbing a stain near the refrigerator.
The front door opened.
"Lily?""
I recognized that voice immediately.
"DADDY!""
I jumped up and ran toward him.
My father, Marcus, had returned from a business trip two days earlier than expected.
He dropped his suitcase when he saw me.
But before I could reach him, my right shoe broke completely.
The sole separated from the upper part.
I stumbled and fell onto the hardwood floor.
"Lily!""
Dad rushed toward me.
"Sweetheart, are you hurt?""
He lifted me into his arms, then noticed the blood on my heel.
His eyes moved to my shoes.
He picked up the broken one.
"Baby, how long have you been wearing these?""
I looked toward the staircase.
Vanessa stood there holding her new handbag.
"Answer your father," she ordered.
I swallowed.
"Since last winter.""
Dad stared at her.
"Vanessa, I gave you two thousand dollars last month for the children's clothes and shoes.""
She folded her arms.
"Marcus, don't start. Lily destroys everything. I'm not buying her another pair just so she can ruin them.""
Dad slowly stood.
"Then explain why Brianna has three new pairs upstairs.""
"My children know how to take care of their things.""
"Lily is my child too.""
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"You're making a scene over a pair of cheap sneakers.""
Dad reached for his phone.
"Actually, I'm wondering where the money went.""
He opened our family account.
His expression changed as he scrolled through the transactions.
"Forty-eight hundred dollars?""
Vanessa's face tightened.
"Give me your phone.""
"No. Why did you spend $4,800 this month on Brianna and Tyler?""
"Marcus, we can discuss this privately.""
Then I tugged on his sleeve.
"Daddy?""
He looked down.
"Yes, princess?""
"Please don't be mad. Vanessa said if I told you about my shoes, she'd throw away the last thing Mommy gave me.""
Dad froze.
"What did you just say?""
I pointed toward the locked storage room beneath the staircase.
"My mommy's box.""
Vanessa rushed down the stairs.
"Lily! Go to your room!""
Dad stepped between us.
"Don't you dare touch my daughter.""
I began crying.
"Daddy, there's something else.""
He knelt in front of me.
"What is it, sweetheart?""
I whispered the words that made his face turn completely white.
"Vanessa said Mommy didn't really die the way you told me. She said if you ever found what's inside her box, you'd send Vanessa to jail.""
Dad slowly turned toward his wife.
"Vanessa, what is my daughter talking about?""
For the first time since I'd known her, my stepmother had absolutely nothing to say.
Then Dad noticed something.
May you like
The key to my mother's storage room was hanging around Vanessa's neck.
And he reached for it.
