Chapter 4: The Woman Who Signed My Mother's Death Certificate
"Say that again.""
My father's voice was barely recognizable.
He stood beside the dining table, one hand gripping his phone so tightly that his knuckles had turned white.
On the other end, Nurse Patricia Evans was crying.
"Mr. Marcus, I know how this sounds. But I have lived with this secret for three years.
Your wife was conscious when she arrived at the hospital. She was frightened, but she was alive.""
Dad looked at Vanessa.
She was standing near the staircase, clutching the railing.
"Then why was I told she died before the ambulance arrived?"" he demanded.
Patricia took a shaky breath.
"Because someone changed the medical report.""
Daniel Reed immediately opened his briefcase.
"Patricia, this is Daniel Reed, the family's attorney. Are you willing to provide a written statement?""
"Yes. I have copies of the original records.""
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
"That's enough! This woman was fired for misconduct. You can't believe anything she says.""
Daniel turned toward her.
"Interesting. I haven't mentioned anything about her employment.""
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Then closed.
Dad returned his attention to the phone.
"Patricia, tell me exactly what happened that night.""
The nurse explained that my mother had arrived at the hospital following a medical emergency at home.
She had suffered a severe allergic reaction.
The doctors began treatment immediately.
According to Patricia, my mother was frightened but responsive.
She repeatedly asked for me.
"She kept saying, 'Please make sure Lily is safe,'" Patricia explained.
"She also asked us to call you.""
Dad closed his eyes.
"I was on a flight. Nobody told me.""
"Someone canceled the calls.""
"Who?""
There was a long silence.
Then Patricia answered.
"Vanessa.""
Dad looked as though someone had struck him.
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
"She's lying!""
Patricia continued.
"I saw Vanessa arguing with a doctor near the nurses' station. She insisted that she had legal authority to make decisions for Sarah because she was a member of the household.""
"That's impossible," Daniel interrupted.
"She wasn't related to Sarah.""
"I know. That's why I questioned it.""
Dad slowly sat down.
"Did Sarah die because Vanessa stopped her treatment?""
"I can't make that medical determination. But I can tell you that a treatment authorization was withdrawn, and the person who signed the withdrawal was Vanessa.""
Daniel took notes.
"Do you have the original authorization?""
"Yes.""
"Keep it somewhere safe. Don't send it electronically until we've arranged secure delivery.""
"I understand.""
Before ending the call, Patricia said something that made Dad lift his head.
"Mr. Marcus, there's another reason I kept the records. Sarah told me something that night.""
"What?""
"She said if she didn't survive, you should look for the second beneficiary on Lily's trust.""
Dad frowned.
"Second beneficiary?""
"She said it wasn't supposed to be there.""
The call ended.
For several seconds, the only sound was the ticking clock above the fireplace.
Dad looked at Daniel.
"What second beneficiary?""
Daniel removed another folder.
"Marcus, Sarah established a trust for Lily shortly before her death. I handled the original paperwork.""
"And?""
"The trust was designed to provide Lily with financial security until she turned eighteen. But six months after Sarah died, someone submitted an amendment.""
Dad frowned.
"Who authorized it?""
Daniel examined the document.
"According to the copy I have, you did.""
Dad took the paper.
The signature looked like his.
But the date was from a week when he had been overseas.
"I never signed this.""
Daniel nodded.
"I suspected as much.""
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
"You two are making yourselves ridiculous.""
Dad slowly turned toward her.
"You forged my signature?""
"I handled the family's finances!""
"That's not an answer.""
"I did what was necessary!""
Daniel placed the amendment on the table.
"The second beneficiary is listed as Brianna and Tyler's educational foundation.""
Dad stared.
"So money from Lily's inheritance was redirected to Vanessa's children?""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"They're children too.""
"Not Sarah's children.""
"Sarah is dead, Marcus! She isn't going to need the money!""
The words escaped Vanessa before she could stop herself.
Dad stood.
"Get out of my house.""
Her expression changed.
"What?""
"You heard me.""
"Marcus, you can't throw me out over paperwork.""
"This is my daughter's home. And you just admitted that you redirected her inheritance.""
Vanessa looked toward me.
Her eyes were cold.
"You're going to regret believing that little girl.""
Dad stepped between us.
"Daniel, call the police.""
Vanessa's face went pale.
Then she whispered something that neither Dad nor Daniel expected.
"You can't arrest me without explaining what happened to the original medical file.""
Dad froze.
"What does that mean?""
Vanessa looked at the wooden chest.
"Sarah wasn't the only person who kept secrets.""
And before anyone could stop her, she pulled a small photograph from her handbag.
She placed it on the table.
It showed my mother.
But she wasn't in a hospital.
She was standing outside a building with a little girl in her arms.
A little girl who looked exactly like me.
On the back was a date.
*Three days after the funeral.*
Dad picked up the photograph.
His lips moved, but no words came out.
May you like
Because the date on that picture suggested something impossible.
My mother might have been alive after the day Vanessa said she died.
