Chapter 11: The Blue Envelope
Dad arrived at Aunt Rachel's house twenty minutes later.
He didn't even wait for her to open the door completely.
"Where is Lily?""
"In the living room.""
I was sitting on the carpet, holding my old stuffed rabbit.
"Daddy!""
He lifted me into his arms.
"Sweetheart, do you remember the blue envelope Mommy gave you?""
I nodded.
"It's inside Bunny.""
He looked at Aunt Rachel.
"Can we see it?""
I carefully examined the rabbit.
Its left ear had a small tear where the stuffing was coming out.
Mommy had given it to me on my sixth birthday.
She told me that whenever I missed her, I should hug Bunny and remember that love didn't disappear just because someone was far away.
I had never opened the lining.
Dad took a small pair of scissors from the kitchen drawer and carefully removed a few stitches.
Something blue appeared inside.
A tiny envelope.
My name was written across the front.
*LILY. OPEN THIS WHEN DADDY FINDS THE TRUTH.*
Dad's hands began trembling.
He opened it.
Inside was a small flash drive, a photograph, and a handwritten letter.
He unfolded the letter.
"My sweet Lily,
If Daddy is reading this with you, it means he has finally discovered what happened.
I want you to know something important.
Nothing that happened was your fault.
Not the arguments. Not the hospital. Not the money.
You were always the most precious thing in my life.
I made mistakes because I was afraid, but I never stopped loving you.
There is something on this little drive that Daddy needs to see. It will explain why certain people wanted me to disappear.
Please remember that you deserve kindness. You deserve new shoes when your old ones hurt. You deserve people who make you feel safe.
I love you beyond every star in the sky.
Mommy.""
I hugged the letter.
"She wrote this for me?""
Dad kissed my hair.
"Yes, princess.""
Daniel arrived shortly afterward.
He brought a secure laptop and a small evidence case.
They connected the flash drive.
A folder appeared.
Inside were bank statements, audio recordings, company contracts, and a video file.
Dad clicked the video.
My mother's face appeared on the screen.
She was sitting at our old dining table.
Her hair was tied back, and she wore the blue sweater she always wore when she cooked dinner.
I gasped.
"Mommy!""
Dad covered his mouth.
The recording began.
"If you're watching this, Marcus, then Thomas has probably discovered that I found the accounts.""
She looked directly into the camera.
"I need you to understand that the money isn't the only thing he stole.""
Dad leaned closer.
"What else?""
My mother continued.
"Three years ago, Thomas approached me with a proposal. He wanted to move ownership of several company properties into a private trust. He said it was a tax strategy.""
She held up a folder.
"But I discovered that the properties were being transferred to companies controlled by him and Robert.""
She paused.
"Then I found something much worse.""
Dad looked at Daniel.
The video continued.
"Thomas used my signature to authorize loans against assets that belonged to Lily's inheritance. When I confronted him, he admitted that he had been doing it for years.""
My mother took a breath.
"He told me that if I reported him, he would make sure Marcus lost everything.""
Then she lowered her voice.
"And he told me that Lily would be taken away from us.""
I began crying.
Dad pulled me against his chest.
The recording continued.
"I made copies of the original documents. They're on this drive. But there's another file you need to open.""
A second video appeared.
Dad clicked it.
The screen showed my mother's bedroom.
The camera angle was low, as if someone had hidden the device behind a piece of furniture.
Vanessa entered.
She was speaking on the phone.
"Robert, I told you I can't do this anymore.""
A man's voice answered.
"Then you'll lose everything.""
"What about Brianna and Tyler?""
"They'll be fine. Marcus has enough money to support them.""
Vanessa sat on the bed.
"Sarah knows about the accounts. She said she's going to Daniel.""
The man laughed.
"Then make sure she never gets there.""
Vanessa covered her face.
"I don't want anyone hurt.""
"Nobody is asking what you want.""
The recording continued for another minute.
Then the bedroom door opened.
Thomas entered.
He was holding a folder.
"Vanessa, did you get her to sign?""
"No.""
Thomas slammed the folder onto the bed.
"Then we have a problem.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"She's my friend. I can't do this.""
Thomas leaned closer.
"Your children have everything because of me. Don't forget that.""
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Dad stared at the screen.
Daniel immediately copied the files to an evidence drive.
"This is substantial evidence. We need to get it to the investigators.""
Dad nodded.
Then another file caught his attention.
Its title was:
*THE ORIGINAL OWNERSHIP AGREEMENT.*
He opened it.
The first page showed the name of my father's company.
The second page listed the shareholders.
The third page contained a handwritten note from my mother.
Dad read it aloud.
"Thomas doesn't own the company. Marcus doesn't own the company. The controlling shares were placed in a trust for Lily.""
He stopped.
Daniel took the document.
"Marcus, this is legally significant.""
Dad stared.
"How many shares?""
Daniel examined the numbers.
"Seventy percent.""
Dad sank into the chair.
My mother had secretly protected most of the company for me.
The same company Thomas had spent years trying to steal.
But there was another document attached.
A transfer agreement.
It showed that someone had attempted to move the controlling shares into Thomas's name three weeks before Sarah's supposed death.
The signature at the bottom belonged to my mother.
Except it wasn't her real signature.
Daniel looked at the date.
"Marcus, we need to contact the investigators immediately.""
Dad nodded.
Then his phone rang.
It was the detective.
"Mr. Marcus, we've located Thomas.""
"Where?""
"At the airport.""
"Is he leaving the country?""
The detective paused.
"No. He's trying to board a private aircraft.""
Dad stood.
"Have you arrested him?""
"Not yet. But we've discovered something concerning.""
"What?""
The detective lowered his voice.
"Thomas has a passenger with him.""
Dad's stomach tightened.
"Who?""
The detective answered:
"Vanessa's daughter, Brianna.""
I looked at Dad.
"Why is Brianna going with Uncle Thomas?""
Nobody answered.
Then another message arrived.
A photograph.
It showed Brianna standing beside Thomas at the airport entrance.
May you like
And in Thomas's hand was a small piece of paper.
My name was written on it.
