Chapter 14: The Truth About My Father's Name
My father sat down.
He looked at my mother as though the woman he had spent years searching for had suddenly become a stranger.
"What does that mean, Sarah?""
She reached for his hand.
"Please let me explain.""
Daniel and the detective exchanged glances.
The detective gently suggested that the conversation continue with legal counsel present, but Dad refused to leave.
"She's my wife. I'm listening.""
Sarah took a deep breath.
"When I was pregnant with Lily, Thomas was going through a financial crisis. He had borrowed money from several investors and couldn't repay it.""
Dad nodded slowly.
"I remember him asking me for help.""
"He wasn't just asking for help. He was trying to get access to our company.""
Sarah explained that Thomas had discovered a way to use family relationships and inheritance documents to gain control over certain assets.
When she refused to cooperate, he began threatening her.
Then, during my pregnancy, he made a shocking discovery.
He found an old medical document containing an error in my mother's hospital records.
One that could have been used to challenge my legal identity.
Dad frowned.
"Was Lily really my biological daughter?""
Sarah immediately squeezed his hand.
"Yes. Marcus, absolutely. You are Lily's father.""
Dad closed his eyes in relief.
"Then what was Vanessa hiding?""
Sarah looked toward the detective.
"Thomas had arranged for a second birth certificate to be created. He changed Lily's surname and listed a different father on the unofficial copy.""
Daniel examined the document.
"Who?""
Sarah hesitated.
"Robert Evans.""
Dad stared.
"Robert?""
"He was never Lily's biological father. But Thomas wanted to make it appear that Robert had a parental claim.""
The detective nodded.
"We've found evidence of an attempted identity fraud scheme.""
Dad shook his head.
"Why would they go to all this trouble?""
Sarah looked at me.
"Because Lily inherited controlling shares in the company. If they could establish that she belonged to the Evans family, they could attempt to challenge the trust and take control of the assets.""
Dad's face hardened.
"They used my daughter's identity to steal my company.""
Sarah nodded.
"And they used Vanessa to make it happen.""
The detective explained that Vanessa had signed several documents claiming to be my temporary legal guardian.
Those documents had been used to redirect trust funds and establish a false connection between me and the Evans family.
But the investigators had now recovered the original birth records.
The truth was clear.
I was Marcus's biological daughter.
Sarah was my mother.
And the Evans family had fabricated an identity to steal my inheritance.
Dad pulled me onto his lap.
"Nobody is ever going to take you away from me.""
I rested my head against his chest.
"Can we go home now?""
He kissed my forehead.
"Almost, princess.""
Then the detective received a call.
He listened for several seconds before turning toward us.
"We've located Rebecca.""
Sarah stood immediately.
"Where?""
"She's at a residence outside Charlotte. She's agreed to come to Atlanta.""
Dad frowned.
"Why did she take Lily from the hospital?""
The detective explained that Rebecca had been contacted by Sarah shortly before the hospital incident.
Sarah had asked her to protect me if anything happened.
But Rebecca had discovered that Thomas was monitoring the family and believed returning me to Atlanta would put me in danger.
She had kept me away while secretly preserving the documents that proved my identity.
"Why didn't she tell me?"" Dad asked.
"She says she believed you were being watched.""
Sarah began crying.
"I should have trusted her.""
The next morning, Rebecca arrived at the police station.
She was a woman in her forties with dark hair and the same birthmark near her left eye that Sarah had.
When she saw my mother, she stopped walking.
"Sarah.""
My mother rushed toward her.
They embraced and cried.
"I'm sorry," Rebecca whispered.
"I should have brought Lily back sooner.""
Sarah held her face.
"Why didn't you?""
"Thomas threatened me. He told me that if I returned Lily, he would make sure you both disappeared permanently.""
Dad stepped forward.
"You could have called me.""
Rebecca looked at him.
"I tried. Your phone was monitored. Every time I called, someone from Thomas's office answered.""
Daniel handed her a document.
"Do you recognize this?""
Rebecca examined it.
Then she nodded.
"This is the original hospital transfer record.""
"Where did you get it?""
"I took it from the hospital before Thomas could destroy it.""
The detective asked whether she had anything else.
Rebecca opened her handbag and removed a small flash drive.
"I recorded a conversation between Thomas and Vanessa.""
Dad stared.
"When?""
"Two weeks after Sarah disappeared.""
Daniel connected the drive to his laptop.
A recording played.
Thomas's voice filled the room.
"Once Marcus signs the company restructuring documents, we control everything.""
Vanessa replied, "And Lily?""
"She'll be raised as part of our family.""
"What if Marcus refuses?""
Thomas laughed.
"Then we'll make him believe his daughter isn't really his.""
Vanessa was silent.
Then she asked:
"And Sarah?""
Thomas's answer was chilling.
"Sarah is already dead to everyone who matters.""
The recording ended.
Dad stood motionless.
Rebecca began crying.
"I'm sorry. I should have given this to the police years ago.""
The detective took the flash drive.
"This will be entered into the investigation.""
Later that afternoon, the police informed Dad that Thomas had been formally charged with multiple financial crimes, identity fraud, and conspiracy-related offenses. Vanessa was also facing charges connected to the forged documents and the hospital authorization.
But there was one final problem.
The company ownership documents were still under legal review.
Until the court confirmed the original trust, the controlling shares could remain frozen.
Dad wasn't worried about the money.
He was worried about something else.
He wanted to make sure I would never again have to beg someone for the basic things a child deserved.
That evening, Sarah sat beside me on the bed.
She brushed my hair.
"Do you remember what you asked me the first time we met again?""
I shook my head.
"You asked if I still knew your favorite bedtime story.""
I smiled.
"Do you?""
She kissed my forehead.
"Of course.""
She began reading.
But halfway through, my father appeared at the bedroom door.
He held a large envelope.
"Sarah, Lily, we need to talk.""
He placed it on the bed.
Inside was a letter from the court-appointed financial investigator.
It confirmed that Lily Marcus Holdings had been created using fraudulent documents.
But the final paragraph revealed something unexpected.
The company wasn't just worth $3 million.
Its assets had been deliberately undervalued.
The actual value was closer to $12 million.
And the person who had secretly protected the shares all those years was not my father.
It was my mother.
Sarah looked at the document.
Then she smiled through her tears.
"I told you I'd make sure Lily was protected.""
Dad held her hand.
But beneath the financial report was another envelope.
It contained a court notice.
