Chapter 8: The Safe Beneath the Basement Stairs

I opened Danielle's letter with trembling fingers.

Marcus,

If Arthur has finally given you this letter, then the people I feared have started moving against our family.

There is something I never told you about my past.

Before I met you, I was married to Dr. Harrison. I was young, frightened, and convinced that he loved me. I was wrong.

He controlled everything. My money. My friendships. Eventually, even my medical decisions.

When I discovered what he was doing with patient records, I left him.

He promised he would destroy my life if I ever exposed him.

I thought he had forgotten about me.

Then, years later, he appeared at the hospital when I was diagnosed.

He said he wanted to make things right.

I believed him for a little while.

That was my second mistake.

I stopped reading.

My eyes burned.

Danielle had carried this secret alone while I believed I knew everything about her.

I continued.

The blue envelope contains part of the evidence. But the original files are hidden beneath the basement stairs.

Look behind the loose wooden panel.

Please protect Nia.

And Marcus, if you ever find yourself choosing between believing my words and trusting someone who claims to be helping you, remember that I loved you enough to tell you the truth.

Danielle.

I lowered the letter.

Arthur watched me quietly.

"Why didn't you tell me this before?""

"Because Danielle asked me not to. She wanted to give you a chance to live a normal life.""

Robert stood.

"We need to inspect the basement.""

An officer accompanied us downstairs.

The smell hit me immediately.

Damp concrete.

Old cleaning products.

And something faintly metallic.

I looked at the narrow room where Nia had been locked.

A small mattress lay in one corner.

There was a plastic bucket beside it.

On the wall, someone had drawn little flowers in blue crayon.

I crouched.

One flower had Nia's name written underneath.

My throat tightened.

"She did this herself?""

Arthur nodded.

"She probably needed something familiar.""

I touched the wall.

My daughter had spent nights down here, drawing flowers to keep herself company.

While I was traveling for work, answering emails, and believing Vanessa was taking care of our family.

I stood abruptly.

"Show me the stairs.""

Robert examined the wooden panels beneath the staircase.

One appeared slightly loose.

He carefully removed it.

Behind it was a small metal safe.

I recognized the combination lock.

Danielle's birthday.

I entered the numbers.

The safe opened.

Inside were three USB drives, a thick notebook, several medical documents, and a sealed envelope marked with my name.

Robert photographed everything before touching the contents.

The first USB drive contained financial records.

The second contained scanned medical documents.

The third was labeled:

*DANIELLE — FINAL RECORDING.*

My hands trembled.

Robert connected the drive to his secured laptop.

A video appeared.

Danielle was sitting in our bedroom.

She looked tired, but her eyes were clear.

"Marcus," she began, "if you're watching this, I need you to understand that I didn't trust everyone treating me.""

She took a breath.

"Dr. Harrison was my first husband. I left him because I discovered he was falsifying medical records and using patients' identities to move money through accounts connected to his clinic.""

Robert leaned closer.

Danielle continued.

"When I became sick, I was assigned to his care through a hospital referral. I didn't realize who he was until I saw his name on the paperwork.""

She looked down.

"I wanted to request another doctor, but Harrison threatened to expose private information about my family. He knew about Marcus. He knew about Nia.""

I felt my stomach twist.

The video continued.

"I discovered that some of my medical records had been altered. I also found evidence that money intended for my treatment was being transferred elsewhere.""

She lifted a document toward the camera.

"And there's something else. Harrison has been communicating with someone inside Marcus's company.""

Robert paused the recording.

"Do you recognize this?""

He enlarged a name on the document.

*Charles Bennett.*

My business partner.

I closed my eyes.

Danielle had known.

She had known Charles was involved before I ever suspected him.

Robert resumed the video.

Danielle looked directly into the camera.

"Marcus, please don't confront them until you have the original files. I believe they're planning to use my death to gain control of Nia's inheritance.""

She began crying.

"I don't know how much time I have left. But I know one thing. They are not going to stop with me.""

The screen went black.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Arthur opened the notebook.

It contained dates, account numbers, names, and handwritten notes.

Near the final pages was a list of payments.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Vanessa Wells.

Another name appeared beside hers.

Patricia Wells.

And the last entry made Robert stop turning the pages.

It was dated two days before Danielle died.

*Payment approved: $150,000. Recipient: Charles Bennett.*

I stared at the number.

"Why was Charles being paid?""

Robert examined the accompanying note.

"There's a reference number here. We need to trace the transaction.""

Then he noticed something tucked into the notebook's back cover.

A hospital visitor badge.

The photograph showed Vanessa.

The date was from three weeks before Danielle died.

But beneath her photograph was a handwritten authorization.

*Temporary Medical Representative — Danielle Johnson.*

My blood ran cold.

"How could Vanessa have medical authority over my wife?""

Arthur looked at the badge.

"She didn't.""

Robert turned it over.

The signature authorizing the badge belonged to Dr. Harrison.

Then the basement door slammed shut.

A heavy object scraped across the floor above us.

The officer rushed toward the stairs.

"POLICE! WHO'S UP THERE?""

A man's voice answered.

"Looking for something that belongs to me.""

Arthur went pale.

May you like

He whispered a name.

"Patricia.""
