Chapter 11: The Doctor Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The name on the document wouldn't leave my mind.

Dr. Samuel Whitmore.

Arthur had told me he was Danielle's stepfather.

He had never mentioned having a son who was a doctor.

And according to the family history Danielle had once shared with me, Samuel had died decades ago.

"Detective, what exactly does this document establish?""

Harris examined the signature.

"Only that Danielle requested a change in physician. We haven't confirmed whether the request was approved.""

Robert looked at Arthur, who had remained in the living room.

"Mr. Whitmore, did you have a son named Samuel?""

Arthur's face went pale.

"Yes.""

"Is he alive?""

Arthur slowly sat down.

"I was told he died.""

"By whom?""

"Dr. Harrison.""

I looked at him.

"Why would Harrison tell you your own son was dead?""

Arthur covered his face.

"Because Samuel was the first person who discovered what Harrison was doing.""

The room went silent.

Arthur continued.

"Samuel was a medical researcher. He worked with Harrison during the early years of his career. They were close friends until Samuel discovered irregularities in patient medication records.""

"Was Samuel involved in Danielle's treatment?""

Arthur nodded.

"He contacted Danielle shortly before she died. He told her he had evidence that Harrison was deliberately falsifying medical records.""

Robert leaned forward.

"Do you know where he is now?""

Arthur shook his head.

"No. But I have something he left with Danielle.""

He reached into his coat and produced a small silver key.

"She gave this to me shortly before she died. She said it belonged to Samuel.""

I examined it.

A number was engraved on the metal.

*B-214.*

Robert recognized it immediately.

"That looks like a storage locker key.""

Detective Harris contacted the hospital and arranged to have the relevant records preserved.

Meanwhile, we received confirmation that officers had reached Andre's address in Charlotte.

Harrison was gone.

Andre was alive but injured.

According to the officers, someone had struck him in the face before fleeing through the back door.

I called him.

He answered weakly.

"Marcus.""

"Are you okay?""

"My nose is broken. But I'm alive.""

"Did Harrison take anything?""

Andre paused.

"Yes.""

"What?""

"The old photograph of Danielle. The one with the hospital badge.""

I closed my eyes.

"Why would he want that?""

"Because there's writing on the back.""

"What writing?""

Andre took a breath.

"It says, 'Samuel knows the truth about the final dosage.''"

I looked at Robert.

He immediately wrote down the words.

Andre continued.

"Marcus, I need to tell you something else. Vanessa called me last night.""

"What did she say?""

"She said if I didn't give her the original insurance papers, she'd tell everyone I helped steal money from Danielle's medical foundation.""

I clenched my jaw.

"Did you give her anything?""

"No. But she told me something that scared me.""

"What?""

"She said Danielle had changed her will one week before she died.""

I stared at the phone.

"Changed it how?""

"She removed Harrison from everything. But she also added a person as an emergency guardian for Nia.""

"Who?""

Andre's answer came quietly.

"Samuel Whitmore.""

Arthur stood abruptly.

"That's impossible.""

I turned toward him.

"Why?""

Arthur looked at the floor.

"Because Samuel and Danielle had a child together.""

The room went silent.

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

"What?""

Arthur's eyes filled with tears.

"They had a daughter before Danielle met you. She was born prematurely and placed with another family after a complicated legal arrangement.""

I stared at him.

"Danielle had another child?""

"Yes.""

"Does Nia know?""

"No.""

I struggled to process the information.

Danielle had never mentioned a daughter.

Never.

Not once during our marriage.

Robert spoke carefully.

"Do you know where the child is?""

Arthur shook his head.

"Samuel handled the arrangement. Danielle was told the child had died shortly after birth.""

My stomach turned.

"Was that true?""

"I don't know.""

Then Arthur looked at the silver key in my hand.

"But I believe the answer is inside that storage locker.""

Detective Harris returned from the hallway.

"We've located the storage facility. It's registered under a company connected to Dr. Harrison.""

Robert stood.

"Then we're going.""

The facility was on the outskirts of Atlanta.

Rows of metal doors stretched down a long corridor.

The manager verified the key and escorted us to locker B-214.

I inserted it.

The lock clicked.

Inside were several cardboard boxes, a metal filing cabinet, and a small suitcase.

Robert photographed everything before opening the boxes.

The first contained old medical research.

The second held financial statements.

The third contained photographs.

I picked up one showing Danielle holding a newborn baby.

Her face was younger.

Her hair was shorter.

And she was smiling in a way I hadn't seen in years.

A handwritten note was attached.

*Our daughter. October 14.*

I looked at Arthur.

"Who is she?""

Arthur's eyes filled with tears.

"Her name was Grace.""

I opened the suitcase.

Inside was a birth certificate.

The child's name was Grace Whitmore.

But the adoption section was blank.

Instead, there was a document transferring temporary guardianship to someone named Richard Coleman.

Danielle's former attorney.

Robert took the paper.

"This is significant.""

I looked through the remaining documents.

Then I found an old photograph of a woman standing outside the hospital.

She was holding a little girl who looked about six years old.

On the back was a handwritten message.

Grace, with love from your mother.

I turned the photograph over.

The little girl had the same distinctive birthmark as Nia.

Two small crescent-shaped marks near her left ear.

I remembered Nia's birthmark immediately.

My hands began shaking.

"Robert.""

He looked at me.

I pointed toward the photograph.

"Look at her ear.""

He examined it.

Then he looked at the birth certificate again.

"Marcus, I think we need to establish whether this child is alive.""

My phone rang.

It was an unknown number.

I answered.

A young woman's voice spoke.

"Mr. Johnson?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Grace.""

I couldn't breathe.

She continued.

"I think I'm Danielle's daughter.""

May you like

Then she said the words that changed everything.

"Your daughter Nia and I have the same father.""
