Chapter 12: The Daughter Danielle Left Behind
For several seconds, I couldn't respond.
The young woman on the phone was crying.
"Mr. Johnson? Are you still there?""
I swallowed.
"Yes. I'm here.""
"My name is Grace Whitmore. I've been trying to find my biological family for years.""
I looked at Arthur.
He was staring at me with tears running down his face.
"How old are you?"" I asked.
"Twenty-four.""
"Where are you?""
"Charlotte.""
I glanced at Robert.
Andre lived in Charlotte.
So did Dr. Harrison's network of contacts.
"How did you get my number?""
"Through a woman who used to work with my adoptive parents. She found some old documents with Danielle's name on them.""
"Do you know who Danielle was?""
Grace began crying harder.
"She's my biological mother.""
I sat down.
"How much do you know about her?""
"Not much. My adoptive parents told me she was young when I was born. They said she couldn't take care of me.""
"Did they tell you who your father was?""
"Yes.""
I closed my eyes.
"Samuel Whitmore.""
"That's what the papers say.""
I looked toward Arthur.
He nodded slowly.
"Grace," I said, "I'm going to ask you something. Have you ever heard of Dr. Harrison?""
The silence was immediate.
Then she whispered:
"Yes.""
My stomach tightened.
"How do you know him?""
"He visited my adoptive parents when I was a child.""
"Why?""
"He said he was an old friend of my biological mother.""
I gripped the phone.
"Did he ever ask you to sign anything?""
Grace hesitated.
"Actually, yes. When I turned eighteen, he contacted me about an inheritance.""
Robert leaned forward.
"What inheritance?""
I repeated the question.
Grace answered.
"He said my biological father had left money for me, but I needed to sign a release form before I could receive it.""
My blood ran cold.
"Did you sign?""
"No. My adoptive father told me to have an attorney review it first.""
Robert nodded approvingly.
"Good decision.""
Grace continued.
"After that, Dr. Harrison stopped contacting me. But three days ago, I received an envelope at my apartment.""
"What was inside?""
"A photograph of Danielle and a note.""
"What did the note say?""
Grace's voice trembled.
*Your mother died protecting your sister. Don't let them hurt her, too.*
I looked at Nia's photograph on my phone.
"Grace, listen carefully. Your sister is my daughter. Her name is Nia. She's eight years old.""
Grace began sobbing.
"Does she know about me?""
"Not yet.""
"Is she safe?""
I looked toward the basement stairs.
"She's safe right now. And I'll do everything in my power to keep her that way.""
Grace hesitated.
"Mr. Johnson, there's something else.""
"What?""
"I found another document in the envelope.""
She read the heading.
"Emergency guardianship authorization.""
Robert immediately stood.
"Who is named as guardian?""
Grace read the document.
"Vanessa Wells.""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"That's impossible.""
"The document says she was nominated by Danielle as an emergency guardian in the event that both parents became unavailable.""
Robert took the phone from me.
"Grace, can you send us a photograph of that document?""
"Yes.""
He examined the image when it arrived.
His expression changed.
"This document appears to have been altered.""
"How can you tell?"" I asked.
"The signature page is from a different version. The date doesn't match the filing reference. And there's something else.""
He enlarged a paragraph.
"There's a handwritten condition here.""
I leaned closer.
It read:
Emergency guardianship shall not be activated unless independently approved by Samuel Whitmore or the designated family trustee.
Robert shook his head.
"Someone removed that condition from the copy Grace received.""
I stared at the document.
"So Vanessa couldn't legally become Nia's guardian without Samuel's approval?""
"Correct. At least not through this document.""
Grace spoke again.
"I have another question.""
"Go ahead.""
"Do you know where my father is?""
I looked at Arthur.
He shook his head.
"Not yet.""
Grace took a shaky breath.
"Then I need to tell you something. Dr. Harrison contacted me yesterday. He said my father was alive and wanted to meet me.""
Arthur suddenly stood.
"Samuel is alive?""
Grace continued.
"He gave me an address and told me to come alone.""
Robert immediately interrupted.
"Do not go there. Send us the address.""
Grace agreed.
We ended the call after exchanging contact information.
Robert contacted Detective Harris, who began checking the address.
Meanwhile, I sat beside Arthur.
For years, I had believed Danielle had died without leaving any family secrets behind.
Now I was discovering that she had hidden an entire daughter, a former marriage, and evidence of a conspiracy involving the people I trusted most.
Arthur looked at me.
"Marcus, I owe you an explanation.""
I nodded.
"Then tell me everything.""
He rubbed his eyes.
"Samuel was never dead. Harrison arranged for him to disappear after he threatened to expose the medical fraud.""
"Why would Harrison let him live?""
"Because Samuel had evidence. Harrison needed to know where it was.""
"And Grace?""
"She was leverage.""
I stood.
"Against Danielle?""
Arthur nodded.
"Danielle wanted to find her daughter. Harrison promised to help her, but only if she stopped investigating the medical records.""
I felt sick.
"She agreed?""
"She pretended to agree. That's why she left the recordings and documents.""
Robert entered the room.
"Detective Harris just called. The address Grace provided belongs to an abandoned medical research facility.""
I frowned.
"Is anyone there?""
"Someone is.""
Robert turned his laptop toward me.
A security camera image showed an elderly man entering the building.
Arthur stumbled backward.
His face had gone completely white.
"That's Samuel.""
I stared at the screen.
"You're sure?""
Arthur nodded.
"I would recognize my son anywhere.""
Then the camera image changed.
A second man entered the building.
Dr. Harrison.
Robert immediately called the detective.
But before anyone could speak, another image appeared on the screen.
It showed a woman standing outside the facility.
She was holding a little girl's photograph.
I recognized her.
Vanessa.
Then a message appeared from Grace.
*I KNOW WHERE MY FATHER IS. I'M GOING TO HIM NOW. PLEASE HELP ME.*
I immediately called her.
No answer.
I called again.
Still nothing.
Then a final message arrived.
*MR. JOHNSON, I'M SORRY. HARRISON KNOWS I'M HERE.*
I looked at Robert.
"We need to get to that facility.""
He grabbed his keys.
As we rushed toward the door, my phone rang one more time.
This time, the caller ID showed Vanessa's name.
I answered.
Her voice was calm.
Almost cheerful.
"Hello, Marcus.""
"What do you want?""
"I think it's time we stopped pretending we're enemies.""
I tightened my grip on the phone.
"You're never getting near my daughter again.""
She laughed softly.
"Your daughter? Marcus, you still don't understand.""
"What?""
"Danielle left something in that facility. Something worth far more than six million dollars.""
I stopped walking.
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"And unless you bring me the original trust documents, you'll never find out why Danielle really chose you to raise Nia.""
Then she hung up.
I looked at Robert.
Six million dollars.
The amount in Nia's trust.
The amount they had spent years trying to steal.
But Vanessa's final sentence frightened me more than the money.
