Chapter 13: The Truth About Why Danielle Chose Me
The abandoned medical research facility stood behind a rusted security fence on the outskirts of Charlotte.
By the time Robert and I arrived, police vehicles were already surrounding the building.
Detective Harris met us near the entrance.
"Marcus, we have a problem.""
I looked past him.
"Where's Grace?""
"We haven't located her yet.""
"And Harrison?""
"Inside. We believe he has someone with him.""
I stepped toward the entrance.
Harris blocked my path.
"You're not going in there.""
"That's my family in there!""
"We have tactical officers handling the situation.""
Robert placed a hand on my shoulder.
"Marcus, let them do their job.""
I reluctantly stepped back.
Then a police officer emerged from the building.
He was carrying a small metal case.
"Detective, we found this in the main laboratory.""
Harris opened it.
Inside were several hard drives, medical files, and a thick envelope.
My name was written across the front.
*MARCUS JOHNSON — TO BE OPENED ONLY AFTER THE TRUTH IS KNOWN.*
I recognized Danielle's handwriting.
My hands trembled.
"Where did you find it?""
"Inside a locked cabinet in the basement.""
Harris examined the documents.
"There's something else. We found evidence of unauthorized medical research and financial transactions involving several patients.""
Robert picked up one of the folders.
"These are the same accounts mentioned in Danielle's notebook.""
I looked toward the building.
"Where is Harrison?""
Before Harris could answer, a loud crash came from inside.
Officers shouted.
Then a woman screamed.
"HELP! SOMEBODY HELP ME!""
I recognized Grace's voice.
I ran.
This time, nobody could stop me.
Inside the building, officers were escorting a frightened young woman down a corridor.
Grace.
Her wrists were red, and her face was wet with tears.
When she saw me, she rushed forward.
"Mr. Johnson!""
I caught her as she stumbled.
"Are you hurt?""
She shook her head.
"Where's my father?""
I looked around.
An officer appeared from another room.
"We found an older male in the laboratory. He's receiving medical attention.""
Arthur arrived moments later.
He had insisted on coming with us.
The moment he saw the man on the stretcher, he froze.
"Samuel.""
The elderly man slowly opened his eyes.
"Dad?""
Arthur dropped beside him.
For the first time in decades, father and son were reunited.
I stepped back to give them space.
But then I noticed something.
Dr. Harrison wasn't among the people being escorted outside.
"Where is Harrison?""
A police officer pointed toward the rear corridor.
"He attempted to escape through a service exit. Officers have him in custody.""
I exhaled.
Finally.
The man who had haunted my wife's final months was going to answer for what he had done.
But I still needed to understand Danielle's letter.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten note and a photograph of Danielle holding Nia as a newborn.
Marcus,
I know there are things you don't understand about our family. I wish I could explain everything in person.
When I met you, I had already lost almost everything. I had lost my mother, my marriage, my trust in doctors, and nearly my relationship with my first child.
You never asked me to explain my past. You simply loved me.
When I became pregnant with Nia, I was terrified. I thought Harrison would find a way to control our daughter just as he had tried to control me.
But you made me feel safe.
You never treated my past as something that made me less worthy of love.
That's why I chose you.
Not because you could give Nia money.
Not because you had a successful business.
Because you were the only man I had ever known who loved a child without asking what he would receive in return.
I stopped reading.
Tears blurred the words.
Danielle had chosen me because she trusted me to love our daughter.
Not because of the money.
Not because of the inheritance.
Because I was her father.
I continued.
There's one more secret.
Grace was not given away because I didn't want her. Harrison manipulated the adoption paperwork after threatening to expose private medical information and separate us permanently.
I believed that keeping her away from him was the only way to protect her.
I tried to find her again, but the records had been changed.
If you find her, please don't let her believe I abandoned her.
Tell her I loved her every day.
And tell Nia that she has a sister.
I lowered the letter.
Grace stood beside me, crying silently.
I held it out.
She read the words.
Then she pressed the paper against her chest.
"She didn't forget me," she whispered.
"No," I said.
"She never stopped loving you.""
Grace collapsed into my arms.
Arthur joined us.
For a moment, we were simply a family grieving the years that had been stolen from us.
Then Robert approached.
"Marcus, there's something in the second folder you need to see.""
He opened a medical report.
It contained a series of medication orders from Danielle's final weeks.
Several entries had been changed.
The original prescriptions were different from the medications administered.
But the most important detail was at the bottom.
A physician had documented concerns about the changes.
The physician was Samuel Whitmore.
I looked toward the stretcher.
"Can he explain this?""
Samuel nodded weakly.
"Yes.""
We approached him.
He struggled to sit upright.
"I tried to warn Danielle," he said.
"Harrison was altering treatment records and administering medication outside the approved plan.""
"Did he cause her death?""
Samuel closed his eyes.
"I can't tell you that without a complete independent review. But I can tell you that the final treatment decisions were not properly documented.""
My chest tightened.
"Why didn't you come to me?""
"Because Harrison threatened to destroy the evidence and have me arrested. He knew Danielle was trying to protect you and Nia.""
I looked toward the police officers.
"Then make sure everything is preserved.""
Samuel nodded.
"There is one more recording. The original. It's stored on the final drive.""
Robert examined the case.
Before he could connect anything, Detective Harris approached with a serious expression.
"Marcus, we have a problem. Harrison is asking to speak with you.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"He says he knows who ordered the entire operation.""
I stared at him.
"Who?""
May you like
Harris lowered his voice.
"Your former attorney, Richard Coleman.""
