Chapter 3: The Secret Danielle Took to Her Grave

I didn't sleep that night.

Dr. Harrison's words kept repeating in my head.

Your wife left something at the hospital.

Something that could explain why Vanessa was so interested in marrying you.

At 7:15 the next morning, I drove to Atlanta Memorial Medical Center with Robert.

I had spent countless hours in that building during Danielle's illness.

I remembered the smell of disinfectant.

The squeaking wheels of hospital beds.

The vending machine that never seemed to have anything Nia liked.

Most of all, I remembered the final night.

Danielle had been so weak that she could barely lift her hand.

I had held it until the nurse told me she was gone.

Now I was walking back into the same hospital because I suspected the man who had treated her had concealed something.

Robert had arranged a meeting with the hospital's legal department.

A woman named Ms. Reynolds greeted us in a conference room.

She was in her late fifties, with silver-framed glasses and a calm voice.

"Mr. Johnson, I reviewed your request. Unfortunately, some of your wife's medical information is protected by confidentiality rules.""

"I'm her husband.""

"I understand.""

"And I'm trying to find out whether her doctor was involved in something that could have endangered her.""

Ms. Reynolds folded her hands.

"Dr. Harrison is no longer employed here.""

Robert leaned forward.

"When did he leave?""

"Approximately four months ago.""

"Why?""

She hesitated.

"I can't discuss personnel matters.""

I placed the insurance amendment on the table.

"Then can you explain why his signature appears on this document?""

She examined it.

Her expression changed.

"I'll need to make a copy of this.""

"Why?""

"Because Dr. Harrison was involved in an internal review before his departure.""

My heart began pounding.

"What kind of review?""

She looked toward the closed conference room door.

"Concerns were raised about irregularities in several patient files.""

Robert exchanged a glance with me.

"Was Danielle one of those patients?""

Ms. Reynolds didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she stood and walked toward a filing cabinet.

She returned with a sealed envelope.

"This was left with our patient advocate shortly before your wife's death. It was marked for you.""

I stared at the handwriting.

Marcus.

I knew it immediately.

It was Danielle's.

My hands began shaking.

"Why wasn't this given to me?""

"The advocate who received it retired shortly afterward. The envelope was misplaced during a records transition. It was recently discovered while we were reviewing the old files.""

I tore it open.

Inside was a short handwritten letter.

My love,

If you're reading this, something happened that I couldn't explain while I was still here.

Please don't let anyone convince you that Nia is better off without you.

There are people around us who have been asking questions about our finances. Dr. Harrison says they're trying to help, but something doesn't feel right.

I found a copy of a document in his office. It had my name on it, but I never signed it.

I wanted to tell you everything, but I was afraid.

Look for the blue envelope.

And whatever happens, keep Nia close.

I love you both.

Danielle.

I read it twice.

Then I pressed the letter against my chest.

Robert spoke softly.

"Marcus, do you know what the blue envelope is?""

I shook my head.

Ms. Reynolds returned to her seat.

"There's one more thing you should know. Before Danielle passed, she requested that her personal belongings be released to her family. But Dr. Harrison signed for several items himself.""

"Which items?""

She checked a printed inventory.

"A handbag, a personal journal, a small digital camera, and a sealed envelope.""

I stared at her.

"The camera?""

"Yes.""

I immediately thought about the memory card Nia had hidden.

Danielle's security camera had been recording our living room.

But the inventory suggested something else.

She had also owned a personal digital camera.

I asked for the serial number.

Ms. Reynolds provided it.

It wasn't the camera I had recognized in the recording.

It was a different one.

"Where are those belongings now?""

"According to our records, they were released to Dr. Harrison.""

Robert stood.

"That's enough. We'll need a copy of every relevant record, and we'll be submitting a formal request through the appropriate legal channels.""

As we walked toward the parking garage, my phone vibrated.

A text message from an unknown number appeared.

*You need to stop looking into Danielle's medical records.*

Another message arrived.

*Vanessa isn't the only person who can make your daughter disappear.*

I showed Robert.

He immediately photographed the messages.

"Don't respond. I'll forward these to the investigators.""

I looked around the parking garage.

A black SUV was parked near the exit.

Its engine was running.

The windows were tinted.

As we approached our car, the driver's window slowly lowered.

A woman in her forties leaned toward the opening.

"Mr. Johnson?""

I stopped.

"Who are you?""

"My name is Evelyn Carter. I was Danielle's oncology nurse.""

I remembered her.

She had been one of the few nurses who always made Nia smile.

"What are you doing here?""

She glanced toward the black SUV.

"Because I heard you were asking questions.""

Robert stepped closer.

"Do you have information about Dr. Harrison?""

Evelyn nodded.

"More than you realize.""

She opened the passenger door.

"Get in. We don't have much time.""

I hesitated.

"Why should I trust you?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because I was there the night Danielle begged Dr. Harrison to stop.""

My blood ran cold.

"Stop what?""

Evelyn looked directly at me.

"Changing her medication.""

I felt the ground shift beneath my feet.

"What?""

She lowered her voice.

"Marcus, your wife wasn't just worried about insurance documents. She believed someone was deliberately interfering with her treatment.""

Robert stepped closer to the car.

"Do you have proof?""

Evelyn nodded.

"I kept a copy of something I was told to destroy.""

She reached into her purse and pulled out a small blue envelope.

The exact words Danielle had written in her letter.

Look for the blue envelope.

I stared at it.

Evelyn placed it in my hands.

"Your wife asked me to keep this safe until she knew who she could trust.""

I carefully opened it.

Inside was a folded sheet of paper, a photograph, and a hospital medication log.

The photograph showed Dr. Harrison standing outside Danielle's hospital room.

Beside him was Vanessa.

But that wasn't what made my heart stop.

On the back of the photograph, Danielle had written one sentence.

*Marcus, if anything happens to me, ask why your new wife was already visiting my doctor before we even met.*

I looked up at Evelyn.

"What do you mean, before we met?""

She swallowed.

Then she pointed toward the black SUV.

"Because the woman who introduced Vanessa to Dr. Harrison was...""

Before she could finish, the SUV suddenly accelerated toward us.

Robert shouted.

Evelyn screamed.

May you like

And I realized the driver wasn't trying to scare us away.

He was aiming straight for the blue envelope in my hands.
