Chapter 7: The Man Who Knew Everything
The name Claire gave me stayed in my mind all night.
My father’s closest friend.
For years, I had trusted him.
Everyone had.
Richard Vale had been beside my father since the beginning of his company. He was the man who attended family dinners, who gave me advice when I was young, who stood beside my father at business meetings.
When my father died, Richard was the person who helped organize everything.
The funeral.
The estate.
The legal documents.
The trust.
Everything.
And now I was sitting in my apartment wondering if the person who helped protect my family had been the one destroying it.
“Daniel.””
Rachel’s voice pulled me back.
She was looking through the documents again.
“Richard Vale had access to every important file your father owned.””
I stared at his name on the screen.
“He was like family.””
“That’s exactly why he was dangerous.””
I didn’t like hearing that.
Because it was true.
People don’t usually destroy you from outside the walls.
They do it after you invite them inside.
The next morning, Rachel and I visited Richard’s law office.
It was located downtown, inside a tall glass building where everything looked expensive and untouchable.
The receptionist smiled when we entered.
“Mr. Vale is expecting you.””
I stopped.
“He is?””
She nodded.
“He said you would come eventually.””
That sentence immediately made me uncomfortable.
When we entered his office, Richard was standing by the window.
He was older now.
Gray hair.
Calm eyes.
The same warm smile I remembered from my childhood.
“Daniel.””
He opened his arms slightly.
“I wondered when you would start asking questions.””
I didn’t shake his hand.
“You knew?””
His smile faded.
“Knew what?””
“That Ethan was being kept away from me.””
Richard looked at Rachel.
Then back at me.
“Be careful with your assumptions.””
I placed the documents on his desk.
“The custody agreement.””
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
“You found that.””
“You wrote it.””
Silence.
Richard walked around the desk slowly.
“No.””
I stared at him.
“No?””
“I created a draft.””
Rachel looked up.
“What’s the difference?””
“The difference is that I never approved it.””
I frowned.
“Then why was your name connected to it?””
Richard sat down.
“Because someone used my work.””
“Who?””
He looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw fear.
Not guilt.
Fear.
“I warned your father.””
“About Marcus?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Then who?””
Richard leaned forward.
“Daniel, your father discovered something about Ethan’s inheritance that went far beyond money.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What does that mean?””
“It means the trust wasn’t only about protecting wealth.””
“Then what was it about?””
Richard opened a drawer.
He pulled out an old folder.
Inside was a report.
“The company your father built had a hidden ownership dispute.””
I looked confused.
“What does that have to do with Ethan?””
“Everything.””
Richard pointed to a name.
A name on the first page.
“Your father discovered someone had been moving company assets before his death.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Instead, he said:
“The person wanted Ethan’s trust because it contained something more valuable than money.””
Rachel took the document.
“A record?””
Richard nodded.
“Evidence.””
My heart started racing.
“Evidence of what?””
Richard looked toward the window.
“Fraud.””
The word hung in the room.
“Who committed it?””
Richard turned back.
“Your father’s business partner.””
I stared.
“Who?””
Richard’s face became serious.
“The same person who helped raise Marcus.””
I froze.
“What?””
Richard pushed another document toward me.
A birth record.
A company connection.
A family relationship.
And then I saw it.
Marcus Hale wasn’t just connected to Richard.
He was his nephew.
My hands went cold.
Rachel whispered:
“Marcus was protecting Richard.””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
He looked directly at me.
“Marcus was protecting Ethan.””
I stood up.
“Then why did he hurt him?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t have to.
The truth was still there.
Marcus had made choices.
He had terrified my son.
He had taken away years I could never get back.
But maybe the story was bigger than one villain.
Maybe there were layers.
And someone had been hiding behind all of them.
As we left the office, Richard called after me.
“Daniel.””
I stopped.
“Your father left one more message.””
I turned around.
“What message?””
Richard’s voice lowered.
“He told me if anything happened to him, I should only reveal it when you were ready.””
I stared.
“Ready for what?””
May you like
Richard looked at me.
“To learn why Ethan was the most important person in that entire company.””
