Chapter 4: The Secret Clause

The sealed page was unlike the rest of the document.

The paper was older.

Thicker.

Almost like someone had intentionally hidden it away, hoping nobody would ever have a reason to open it.

Rachel carefully unfolded it on her desk.

I watched her eyes move across the words.

Then her expression changed.

“Daniel…”

“What does it say?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more than anything.

I grabbed the edge of the desk.

“Rachel, tell me.””

She looked up.

“Your father created a trust for Ethan.””

I frowned.

“A trust?””

She nodded.

“After you and Claire divorced, your father changed his estate plan.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

My father had never mentioned anything.

Not once.

“He knew about this?””

“He knew Ethan was his grandson,” Rachel said.

“And apparently he was concerned about what would happen if you and Claire couldn’t agree on custody.””

I stared at the paper.

“So Marcus knew?””

Rachel pointed at the signature.

“He wasn’t supposed to.””

“Then how did he find it?””

She flipped through the pages.

“That’s the question.””

The document explained everything.

My father had placed a large portion of his company shares into a trust for Ethan.

But there was a condition.

A very specific condition.

Ethan’s inheritance would only remain protected if he maintained a relationship with both biological parents.

If either parent intentionally prevented contact, the court-appointed trustee could intervene.

Marcus wasn’t just keeping Ethan away from me.

He was putting millions of dollars at risk.

But there was something else.

A hidden clause.

Rachel read it again.

“Wait.””

“What?””

She leaned closer.

“This clause was added later.””

“By who?””

She turned the page.

There was a signature.

A name.

Marcus Hale.

I felt a wave of anger.

“He changed my father’s document?””

“No,” Rachel said quickly.

“He couldn’t legally change the original trust.””

“Then what did he do?””

She pointed to the text.

“He created a separate agreement.””

I read the sentence.

“Temporary guardianship arrangement.””

My blood ran cold.

“Temporary?””

Rachel nodded.

“It looks like Marcus convinced Claire to sign this after your father died.””

“Why would she do that?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Because she may not have known what she was signing.””

I thought back to Claire’s behavior.

The hesitation.

The fear.

The way she always looked at Marcus before answering simple questions.

Maybe she wasn’t the person controlling everything.

Maybe she was trapped too.

But I wasn’t ready to forgive her.

Not yet.

I needed answers.

That evening, I went to Claire’s house.

She opened the door and immediately knew something was wrong.

“You found something.””

It wasn’t a question.

I held up the documents.

“You signed this.””

Her face turned pale.

“I…”

“You signed an agreement that kept Ethan away from me.””

Tears appeared in her eyes.

“Daniel, I didn’t know.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

The desperation in her voice stopped me.

For the first time in years, Claire didn’t look angry.

She looked broken.

“Marcus told me it was paperwork to protect Ethan,” she whispered.

“Protect him from what?””

She looked down.

“I don’t know.””

“Claire.””

She wiped her face.

“He said your father’s trust would cause problems.””

“What problems?””

She shook her head.

“I asked him the same thing.””

“And?””

“He told me…”

She stopped.

“What?””

“He told me if you ever found out about the trust, you would take Ethan away.””

I stared at her.

“That’s what he told you?””

She nodded.

“And I believed him.””

The silence between us was heavy.

Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.

“Did Marcus hurt Ethan?””

Claire closed her eyes.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“I saw the garden.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“The day you left.””

I stepped closer.

“You saw?””

She nodded slowly.

“I saw Marcus take Ethan outside.””

“Why didn’t you stop him?””

Her face collapsed.

“Because I thought he was just angry.””

The room became silent.

“What happened?””

Claire whispered:

“Ethan was crying. He kept asking when you were coming back.””

My hands shook.

“And Marcus?””

“He told Ethan something I’ll never forget.””

“What?””

Claire looked at me.

“He said, ‘Your father chose to leave you. So now you’ll learn what happens when people abandon you.’”

I felt rage burn through me.

But Claire wasn’t finished.

“Then Marcus saw the camera.””

“The camera?””

She nodded.

“He looked directly at it.””

A chill went through me.

“He knew it was recording.””

Rachel’s words echoed in my mind.

The footage wasn’t deleted after.

It was deleted before.

Someone planned it.

I looked at Claire.

“Why did you stay with him?””

She covered her face.

“Because Marcus threatened me.””

“With what?””

She slowly lowered her hands.

“With Ethan’s inheritance.””

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

It was Rachel.

I answered immediately.

“Daniel, I found something else.””

“What?””

Her voice was tense.

“The security backup wasn’t the only thing Marcus deleted.””

I stood still.

“What else?””

A pause.

May you like

Then she said:

“The original custody file.””
