Chapter 6: The Name In The File

I didn’t sleep that night.

The message stayed on my screen until sunrise.

Over and over, I read the same words.

“You think Marcus is the villain.””

It was designed to confuse me.

To make me question everything.

And it almost worked.

Almost.

But then I looked at Ethan’s drawing again.

The little boy.

The garden.

The stick.

The words at the bottom.

“Daddy, I waited for you.””

Whatever Marcus was hiding, it involved my son.

And that was enough.

Rachel traced the unknown number.

By noon, she called me.

“It’s a burner phone.””

“Can you find who bought it?””

“Maybe.””

“Maybe?””

She sighed.

“Whoever sent it knew how to hide.””

I walked around my apartment.

“So Marcus didn’t send it?””

“I didn’t say that.””

“But you don’t think he did.””

A pause.

“No.””

That worried me.

“Why?””

“Because the message sounds like someone who knows the entire story.””

“What do you mean?””

“Marcus would threaten you.””

She looked at me through the video call.

“But this person is warning you.””

That was worse.

Someone else was involved.

Someone who had been watching.

That afternoon, Rachel and I returned to my father’s old office.

It had been untouched since his death.

Dust covered the shelves.

Old books filled the walls.

My father was a man who trusted paper more than technology.

He believed records mattered.

And now I understood why.

We searched every drawer.

Every cabinet.

Every hidden compartment.

Then Rachel found something.

A small metal box behind a loose wooden panel.

Inside were three items.

A key.

A letter.

And an old family record.

The letter was addressed to me.

My hands shook as I opened it.

“Daniel,

If you ever find this, it means I was right to worry.””

I stopped reading for a moment.

My father had written this before he died.

“I discovered someone close to our family was attempting to manipulate Ethan’s future. I could not prove it, but I knew the danger was real.””

I looked at Rachel.

“Manipulate his future.””

She nodded.

I continued.

“The person involved is not acting alone.””

My stomach tightened.

The next line was underlined.

“They have access to information only family members should know.””

I read faster.

“The first person you will suspect is the obvious one. Do not stop there.””

I froze.

The obvious one.

Marcus.

My father knew.

He knew Marcus would look guilty.

But there was more.

The final paragraph made my hands go numb.

“Daniel, the person who signed the hidden agreement was not the person who created it.””

I looked up.

“What?””

Rachel leaned closer.

“What?””

I handed her the letter.

She read the sentence.

Then her expression changed.

The agreement.

The one Marcus signed.

The one designed to keep Ethan away from me.

Someone else had written it.

Someone who knew our family.

Someone who knew exactly how to destroy us.

Rachel opened the family record.

Inside was a list of names connected to my father’s company.

Executives.

Lawyers.

Partners.

Then one name caught my attention.

A name I recognized.

A name that made no sense.

Because this person had no connection to Marcus.

No connection to Claire.

No reason to be involved.

I whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

Rachel looked at me.

“Who is it?””

I pointed to the name.

“My father’s attorney.””

The room went silent.

Because the man who had created the trust…

The man who had protected Ethan’s inheritance…

Was the same man who had secretly helped someone take it away.

Then my phone rang.

It was Claire.

I answered immediately.

Her voice was shaking.

“Daniel…”

“What happened?””

“I found something in Marcus’s office.””

“What?””

A long pause.

Then she whispered:

“A file with Ethan’s name on it.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What was inside?””

Claire started crying.

“Proof that Marcus wasn’t trying to steal Ethan’s inheritance.””

A chill ran through me.

“Then what was he trying to do?””

Her voice broke.

“He was trying to stop someone else from taking it.””

I looked at Rachel.

Neither of us spoke.

Then Claire said the words that changed everything.

“Daniel… the person Marcus was afraid of was your own father’s closest friend.””
