Chapter 14: The Man Behind The Family

I went to meet Thomas.

Alone.

Not because I trusted him.

Because I needed answers.

And because after everything I discovered, I knew he had spent years believing he was untouchable.

The meeting place was my father’s old company building.

The place where everything began.

The place where everything ended.

Thomas was waiting in the empty conference room.

When I walked in, he smiled.

The same smile I remembered from childhood.

That was the worst part.

A stranger would have been easier.

A stranger couldn’t break your heart.

“You look just like your father.””

I stayed standing.

“You knew I would find out.””

Thomas nodded.

“I knew eventually.””

“Why?””

“Because you are your father’s son.””

I laughed quietly.

“Don’t say that.””

His smile faded.

“Why?””

“Because you spent years destroying his family.””

Thomas looked disappointed.

“You still think this is about revenge.””

“What is it about?””

“Survival.””

I stared at him.

“You stole from my father.””

“I protected what was mine.””

“Your company?””

“Our company.””

I stepped closer.

“My father built it.””

“And I helped him.””

“You were paid.””

Thomas shook his head.

“You don’t understand.””

“No. Explain.””

He walked toward the window.

“Your father changed after he became successful.””

I almost laughed.

“My father helped people.””

“Your father forgot promises.””

“What promises?””

Thomas didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Evelyn.””

I froze.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“You knew about her son?””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide it?””

“Because your father wanted control.””

I shook my head.

“That’s not true.””

Thomas looked at me.

“You really believe your father was perfect?””

No.

I didn’t.

Not anymore.

But I knew he loved me.

“You manipulated everyone.””

Thomas sighed.

“I tried to fix a mistake.””

“By hurting Ethan?””

His expression changed.

For the first time, anger appeared.

“Ethan was never supposed to be involved.””

“But he was.””

“Because your father changed the rules.””

“What rules?””

Thomas looked at me.

“The inheritance.””

He walked toward the table.

“Your father created the trust to stop me.””

“Why?””

“Because he discovered what I did.””

Silence.

Finally.

The truth.

“I moved money.””

“How much?””

“Enough.””

I stared at him.

“And my father was going to expose you.””

“Yes.””

“So you created the separation agreement.””

“No.””

The answer surprised me.

Thomas shook his head.

“That wasn’t my idea.””

“Then whose?””

He looked at me.

“Your mother.””

I froze.

“My mother?””

“She wanted to protect you.””

“That makes no sense.””

“She believed if Ethan was removed from the center of the conflict, nobody could use him.””

I shook my head.

“That failed.””

“Yes.””

Thomas looked down.

“It failed because I underestimated how far Richard and Marcus would go.””

“Richard?””

Thomas nodded.

“Richard knew everything.””

I felt anger rise.

“Everyone keeps saying Richard knew.””

“Because he did.””

“Then why didn’t he stop it?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Because he was protecting someone.””

“Who?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

Instead, he handed me a folder.

Inside was a letter.

From my father.

The final file.

The one everyone had been searching for.

I opened it.

The first line made me stop.

“Daniel, if Thomas ever gives you this, it means he finally accepted the truth.””

I looked at Thomas.

The second line was worse.

“Thomas did not destroy our family alone.””

My eyes moved down.

“There was someone else.””

I kept reading.

“Someone I trusted more than anyone.””

The next sentence made my blood freeze.

“The person who betrayed me was the person I asked to protect my son.””

I looked up.

“Who?””

Thomas didn’t speak.

He didn’t need to.

Because the door behind me opened.

Richard walked in.

And he said:

“Daniel, I think it’s time you knew what I did.””
