Chapter 11: The Forgotten Son
I called Ethan immediately.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
The third time, someone picked up.
But it wasn’t Ethan.
It was Evelyn.
“Hello, Daniel.””
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Where is my son?””
“He’s safe.””
“You have five minutes to bring him home.””
A small laugh came through the phone.
“You sound exactly like your father.””
My blood ran cold.
“You don’t know anything about me.””
“I know everything about you.””
“Where is Ethan?””
She ignored the question.
“Do you know what your father did?””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“He left behind a system that decided who mattered.””
“What are you talking about?””
“Your father built a future where one child was protected and another was forgotten.””
I looked at Marcus.
He was listening.
His face had changed.
“You have my son,” I said.
“I have my nephew.””
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“You don’t get to call him that.””
A pause.
Then Evelyn said quietly:
“Your father made sure Ethan inherited everything.””
“Because he was his grandson.””
“And my son was his blood too.””
Silence.
The words landed heavily.
I looked at Rachel.
She was already searching through the files.
“Who is your son?”” I asked.
Evelyn didn’t answer.
Then she said:
“The boy your father erased.””
The call ended.
I immediately called the police.
But before anyone arrived, Rachel found something.
A document hidden inside the old records.
Her face changed as she read it.
“Daniel.””
“What?””
She turned the paper around.
“It’s a birth record.””
I looked down.
The name was there.
Evelyn Vale.
Father.
My father.
Child.
A son.
A half-brother I never knew existed.
His name was Adrian.
I sat down.
My entire life had been built on a story that wasn’t complete.
My father had hidden a child.
A family.
A secret.
And now my son was caught in the middle of it.
“We need to find Evelyn,” I said.
Marcus shook his head.
“I know where she went.””
Everyone looked at him.
“Where?””
“The old estate.””
My heart stopped.
“My father’s old estate?””
He nodded.
“She always went there when she wanted to remember what she lost.””
We drove there immediately.
The old estate sat outside the city.
Abandoned.
Quiet.
The same place my father used to bring me when I was young.
When we arrived, the front door was open.
Too open.
Inside, we found Ethan sitting at a table.
Alive.
Unhurt.
But scared.
“Dad!””
I ran to him.
I held him tightly.
For a moment, nothing else mattered.
Not the secrets.
Not the money.
Not the past.
Just my son.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
Ethan hugged me.
“You came.””
Those two words almost destroyed me.
Because he had waited years just to know that I would.
Then I noticed someone standing near the window.
Evelyn.
Older than in the photograph.
But with the same eyes as my father.
“You took him,” I said.
She looked at Ethan.
“No.””
Her voice was soft.
“I showed him the truth.””
“What truth?””
She looked at me.
“The truth your father buried.””
I stepped forward.
“What do you want?””
She looked around the old house.
“I want my son’s name restored.””
“And if I say no?””
Her expression changed.
Not anger.
Pain.
“Then you will become exactly like your father.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
She reached into a folder.
Then placed a document on the table.
“Ask your mother why she signed this.””
I looked down.
The signature at the bottom was familiar.
My mother’s.
May you like
And the title above it made my blood run cold.
“Family Separation Agreement.””
