Chapter 13: The Last Secret My Father Kept

Richard’s warning followed us all the way back to the city.

Nobody spoke in the car.

Not because we had nothing to say.

Because every answer we found created another question.

For years, I thought my family had been destroyed by a divorce.

By two people who couldn’t agree.

By circumstances.

But now I understood something much worse.

Someone had been moving pieces around a board.

And we were all just trying to survive the game.

When we arrived at Rachel’s office, she immediately locked the door.

“We need to stop thinking emotionally,” she said.

I looked at her.

“My son was manipulated for years.””

“I know.””

“My father hid an entire family from me.””

“I know.””

“My mother signed documents that destroyed my relationship with Ethan.””

She took a breath.

“And all of that can be true while someone else was controlling the situation.””

I hated that she was right.

Because the person behind everything was still unknown.

Rachel placed the documents across the table.

“Let’s go back to the beginning.””

She pointed at the family separation agreement.

“Who benefited from this?””

I looked at the signatures.

“My mother.””

“Did she gain control?””

“No.””

“Did Marcus?””

“No.””

“Did Richard?””

I hesitated.

“He gained access to information.””

Rachel nodded.

“But not ownership.””

She tapped the page.

“The person who benefited was the one who wanted Ethan separated from everyone who could protect him.””

I stared at the paper.

Then I remembered something.

A conversation from years ago.

A conversation I had forgotten.

After my father died, my mother had said something strange.

She told me:

“Some truths are too dangerous for children.””

At the time, I thought she meant grief.

Now I wondered if she meant something else.

I called my mother.

She answered after three rings.

“Daniel?””

Her voice sounded tired.

“Mom, we need to talk.””

A long pause.

“I know.””

My heart tightened.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

I sat down.

“About what?””

“About Ethan.””

The room went silent.

“You knew?””

“I knew something was happening.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Her breathing became shaky.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of who?””

Another pause.

Then she said:

“Your father.””

I froze.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

I couldn’t understand.

“My father died years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then why were you afraid of him?””

Her voice broke.

“Because I knew what he had done.””

I stood.

“What did he do?””

She whispered:

“He created a plan.””

“A plan?””

“To protect you.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It will.””

She started crying.

“Daniel, your father knew Richard was hiding something. He knew Marcus was being influenced. He knew Evelyn was angry.””

“Then why didn’t he stop it?””

“Because he believed the only way to expose the person behind everything was to let them make a mistake.””

I felt sick.

“He used us as bait?””

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“He protected you the only way he knew how.””

I closed my eyes.

I wanted to believe her.

But Ethan’s childhood was not a strategy.

It was a wound.

“Mom,” I said quietly.

“Who was controlling everything?””

Silence.

Then she answered.

“The person your father trusted most.””

My heart sank.

“Richard?””

“No.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Then who?””

My mother whispered a name.

A name I never expected.

“Your father’s business partner.””

I looked at Rachel.

She immediately started searching the records.

“Who?””

My mother continued.

“The man who helped build everything.””

I waited.

Then she said:

“The man who taught you how to ride a bike.””

My body went still.

Because there was only one person.

A man who had been in my life since childhood.

A man I called family.

“Uncle Thomas?””

My mother started crying.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Thomas Reed.

My father’s oldest friend.

The man who attended every birthday.

The man who stood beside my father when the company began.

The man nobody had suspected.

Because everyone thought he was loyal.

Rachel found something.

A financial record.

A hidden transfer.

Her face changed.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

She turned the screen toward me.

“The company losses.””

I looked at the numbers.

Then I understood.

Thomas wasn’t trying to control Ethan’s inheritance.

He was trying to erase evidence.

Evidence that showed he had been stealing from my father for years.

And Ethan’s trust contained the proof.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Thomas.

Only one sentence.

“I was hoping you would never find your father’s final file.””

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

“But since you did…”

May you like

A third message.

“Come alone if you want to know why your father died.””
