Chapter 9: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

The coffee shop suddenly felt too small.

The voices around us disappeared.

The sound of cups.

The conversations.

The music playing quietly overhead.

Everything faded.

Because on the document in front of me was my name.

My signature.

But I had never seen the paper before.

“This is impossible.””

Sarah watched my face carefully.

“I knew you would say that.””

I looked up.

“How long have you had this?””

“Two years.””

“Two years?””

She nodded.

“I was trying to find a way to reach you.””

“And you couldn’t?””

Her expression broke.

“I tried.””

The guilt hit me immediately.

Because I knew.

She had tried.

I was the one who stopped listening.

I pushed the papers back toward her.

“What is this?””

“A transfer authorization.””

“For what?””

Sarah looked down.

“Your investment account.””

My heart dropped.

“How much?””

She hesitated.

“Daniel…”

“How much?””

“Over two hundred thousand dollars.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

She nodded slowly.

“I thought you knew.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

The anger inside me wasn’t loud.

It was worse.

It was quiet.

Controlled.

My mother hadn’t just stolen memories.

She had stolen trust.

She had changed my entire life.

Sarah reached across the table.

“I didn’t want to hurt you.””

I looked at her.

“You lost two years with Leo because of me.””

Her eyes filled.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Because I believed a lie.””

She squeezed her hands together.

“I wanted to tell you everything.””

“Why didn’t you?””

She looked away.

“Because Martha threatened me.””

The words stopped me.

“What did she threaten?””

Sarah took a deep breath.

“She said if I contacted you again, she would make sure you lost custody of Leo.””

I felt sick.

“She couldn’t do that.””

“She knew you would believe her.””

I remembered.

Every accusation.

Every story.

Every time Martha told me Sarah was unstable.

She had been building a picture of Sarah for years.

And I had helped her.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Elena.

Daniel, please come home. We need to talk.

I stared at it.

Sarah noticed.

“Is that her?””

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“Be careful.””

I looked at her.

“Do you think she was part of it?””

Sarah didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more.

“I don’t know.””

I folded the documents.

“But she knew.””

“Yes.””

“And she still married me.””

Sarah looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone was sorry now.

After the damage was done.

After the years disappeared.

I stood.

“I need to go.””

Sarah grabbed my hand.

“Daniel.””

I stopped.

“There’s one more thing.””

I turned.

She looked terrified.

“Before Martha came to my apartment that night…”

She swallowed.

“Someone else came.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“Who?””

Sarah looked at me.

“Elena.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

“She came before Martha.””

I couldn’t move.

“Why?””

Sarah’s voice dropped.

“She wanted to convince me to stop fighting.””

I felt a chill.

“What did she say?””

Sarah’s eyes filled.

“She told me Daniel was happy without me.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

“She told me you had already chosen her.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

Sarah reached into the folder again.

She pulled out a final piece of paper.

“I recorded the conversation.””

My heart stopped.

“A recording?””

She nodded.

“I didn’t know if I would ever need it.””

I stared at the small device attached to the paper.

Then my phone rang.

Martha.

I answered.

Her voice was shaking.

“Daniel, where are you?””

I said nothing.

“Listen to me.””

Her breathing became faster.

“You cannot trust Sarah.””

I looked at the recording.

Then at Sarah.

Then back at the phone.

“Why?””

A pause.

Then my mother whispered:

“Because she knows what really happened the night she disappeared.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Martha’s voice broke.

“Daniel…”

She lowered her voice.

“Sarah wasn’t the only person in that car accident.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

May you like

And then she said:

“The person driving was you.””
