Chapter 6: The Night Sarah Vanished

The photograph slipped from my fingers.

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

Sarah.

An ambulance.

My mother standing beside her.

The image was impossible.

Because the story I had carried for two years was completely different.

I believed Sarah walked away.

I believed she chose money over family.

I believed she abandoned me.

But the evidence sitting in my hands told me something else.

She didn’t leave.

Something happened.

“Daniel.””

Martha’s voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

I looked at her.

“What happened that night?””

She shook her head.

“You don’t want to know.””

My anger exploded.

“Don’t tell me what I want.””

Leo appeared at the doorway again.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

I hated that my son had to see me like this.

I walked over and lowered myself beside him.

“Go upstairs for a minute, okay?””

“Are you mad?””

I forced myself to smile.

“No.””

But he knew.

Children always know.

He hugged me quickly.

Then walked away.

When he disappeared upstairs, I faced my mother again.

“What happened?””

Martha sat down.

For the first time in my life, she looked old.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

“I went to Sarah’s apartment.””

“Why?””

“She called me.””

My eyes narrowed.

“She called you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Martha looked at the floor.

“She wanted to talk.””

“About what?””

“About Leo.””

I waited.

“She said she was scared.””

My heart pounded.

“Scared of what?””

Martha didn’t answer.

“Mom.””

She closed her eyes.

“She said she found out I had been telling you lies.””

The room became silent.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Martha’s hands shook.

“She said she was going to tell you everything.””

I stared at her.

“And you stopped her.””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

“Yes.””

She looked up.

“I didn’t plan for things to happen.””

“What things?””

She swallowed.

“She drove away angry.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“She called me later.””

My body went cold.

“From where?””

“From the hospital.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“She called you from the hospital?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

Martha covered her face.

“I thought I could fix it.””

My voice dropped.

“Fix what?””

She didn’t answer.

I walked closer.

“What did you do?””

Her tears fell.

“I told you she left.””

The confession was almost silent.

But it destroyed everything.

“You knew she was in the hospital.””

“Yes.””

“You knew she didn’t abandon us.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me hate her?””

Martha looked at me.

“I thought eventually you would move on.””

I stepped back.

Move on.

That was the phrase.

The phrase she had repeated for two years.

Move on.

As if Sarah was a chapter she could erase.

As if Leo was part of the past.

As if my family was something she could rearrange.

My phone suddenly rang.

Sarah.

My heart stopped.

I stared at the screen.

After two years.

Her name appeared again.

Martha looked terrified.

“Don’t answer.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She stood.

“Daniel, please.””

The phone kept ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

I pressed accept.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a voice I hadn’t heard in years whispered my name.

“Daniel…”

My knees almost gave out.

“Sarah?””

She was crying.

“I don’t know what Leo told you.””

I looked toward my son’s bedroom.

“He told me enough.””

A pause.

Then Sarah whispered:

“You need to listen carefully.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Why?””

Her voice shook.

“Because Martha isn’t the only person who lied to you.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

Sarah took a shaky breath.

“Daniel…”

The line crackled.

May you like

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Elena knew the truth before she married you.””
