Chapter 14: The Last Secret

I stared at the flash drive on the kitchen table.

Leo sat beside me eating cereal.

Sarah stood near the window.

Neither of us spoke.

Because after everything we discovered, we knew one thing.

The truth always had another layer.

“I don’t want him involved in this anymore.””

Sarah looked at Leo.

Neither did I.

I picked up the flash drive.

“Maybe we don’t watch it.””

Sarah looked at me.

“Daniel.””

I knew what she meant.

We had spent years avoiding the truth.

That was how we got here.

I connected the drive.

A video file appeared.

Created three days before my wedding.

I clicked play.

Elena appeared on screen.

She was sitting in a hotel room.

Her face was pale.

She looked scared.

“Daniel,” she said.

I froze.

It wasn’t a message.

It was a confession.

“I don’t know if I’m going to send this.””

She looked down.

“But I need someone to know.””

Sarah sat beside me.

The video continued.

“Martha told me she had a plan.””

My hands tightened.

“A plan to make Daniel forget Sarah.””

Elena started crying.

“She said Sarah was the reason Daniel was unhappy.””

She paused.

“But I found the letters.””

I looked at Sarah.

“She found them?””

Sarah nodded slowly.

The video continued.

“I read what Sarah wrote.””

Elena wiped her eyes.

“And I realized Martha had lied.””

The room was silent.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Elena answered herself on the screen.

“Because I was afraid.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“I loved Daniel.””

Sarah looked away.

“But I also knew if I told him, I would lose everything.””

The confession hurt.

But it was honest.

At least now.

“I should have stopped the wedding.””

Elena’s voice cracked.

“I should have told Daniel the truth.””

She reached toward the camera.

“But Martha threatened me.””

I froze.

“What?””

Sarah looked at me.

The video continued.

“She told me if I betrayed her, she would tell Daniel I was part of the plan.””

Elena covered her face.

“She was right.””

I paused the video.

The room was silent.

“She was trapped.””

Sarah looked at me.

“Yes.””

I looked at the screen.

A person who made a terrible choice.

But a person who had also been controlled.

I continued watching.

Elena appeared again.

“There is one more thing.””

My heart tightened.

“Martha didn’t act alone.””

The room went cold.

I leaned closer.

“She had help.””

A name appeared on the screen.

I stared.

Because I recognized it.

The name belonged to my business partner.

The man who had handled my finances.

The man who always agreed with my mother.

Richard.

Sarah whispered:

“Who is he?””

I didn’t answer.

Because suddenly another memory returned.

Richard standing beside my mother after the accident.

Richard telling me:

“Don’t worry about the past.””

Richard encouraging me to move on.

Richard helping me sign documents I didn’t understand.

My phone rang.

I answered.

A familiar voice spoke.

“Daniel.””

Richard.

I didn’t say anything.

“I heard about Martha.””

My grip tightened.

“How?””

A pause.

“News travels.””

“You know what happened.””

It wasn’t a question.

Richard went quiet.

Then:

“You don’t understand what you’re uncovering.””

I looked at Sarah.

“Try me.””

His voice became colder.

“Your mother made mistakes.””

“And you?””

Silence.

Then he said:

“I fixed them.””

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

The call ended.

A second later, a message arrived.

An address.

May you like

And one sentence.

Come alone if you want the truth about your father.
