Chapter 11: The Woman in the Hallway
I watched the video again.
Then again.
Because my brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
A younger me stood in the hospital hallway.
Confused.
Injured.
Lost.
And Elena was walking toward me.
But this was years before I met her.
Before the wedding.
Before she became my wife.
Sarah sat down slowly.
“She was there.””
I couldn’t look away.
“What does this mean?””
Sarah’s voice was quiet.
“I don’t know.””
The video continued.
There was no sound.
Only security footage.
Elena approached me.
She handed me a folder.
I watched myself open it.
Read something.
Then my expression changed.
Fear.
Confusion.
Anger.
The video stopped.
I stared at the frozen image.
“What was in that folder?””
Sarah shook her head.
“I never saw.””
I called the number immediately.
No answer.
I called again.
Still nothing.
Then another message appeared.
You’re closer than you think.
I stood.
“I need to go to the hospital.””
Sarah grabbed her coat.
“I’m coming.””
I hesitated.
After everything.
After all the pain between us.
I realized something.
Sarah was the only person who had never asked me to stop looking.
“Okay.””
The hospital records office was almost empty.
The employee behind the desk looked uncomfortable when I showed my identification.
“I need the records from the accident.””
She typed.
Then stopped.
“That file is restricted.””
“Restricted by who?””
She looked at the screen.
“Family authorization.””
“Whose?””
She turned the monitor slightly.
My heart sank.
“Martha Daniels.””
Of course.
I closed my eyes.
“Can you access it?””
The employee hesitated.
“Only if there’s a legal reason.””
Sarah stepped forward.
“There is.””
She placed the documents on the counter.
The employee looked through them.
Then her expression changed.
“Wait here.””
Ten minutes later, she returned with a small folder.
“This was attached separately.””
I opened it.
Inside was a police report.
My hands shook.
The accident.
The official statement.
Driver:
Daniel Carter.
Passenger:
Sarah Carter.
I stared.
“I was driving.””
Sarah nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t I know?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because you had a head injury.””
I kept reading.
Then I saw something strange.
Witness statement.
One witness.
Martha Carter.
My mother.
The statement said:
“Sarah Carter became aggressive and distracted the driver.””
I looked at Sarah.
“That’s not true.””
“No.””
“You weren’t distracting me.””
“No.””
I looked at the report again.
There was another page.
A handwritten note.
Not part of the official file.
I unfolded it.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, please believe me. Sarah was not responsible. I changed my statement because I was scared.
I stopped.
The handwriting wasn’t my mother’s.
It belonged to a doctor.
I read the rest.
I saw what happened before the crash.
I saw who arrived after.
I saw who convinced Martha to lie.
My hands went numb.
Because the final sentence said:
“Elena Williams was present at the hospital before police arrived.””
I looked at Sarah.
“She was there.””
Sarah nodded.
“I told you.””
I stared at the page.
“She knew.””
A voice behind me interrupted.
“You finally found it.””
I turned.
Martha stood at the entrance.
And beside her was Elena.
Both of them looked terrified.
Martha whispered:
“Daniel, please put the file down.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
Elena started crying.
“Daniel…”
I looked at both women.
“How long were you planning to keep me trapped in a lie?””
Neither answered.
Then Elena whispered:
“I can explain.””
I held up the report.
“Then explain one thing.””
My voice shook.
“Why were you at the hospital before you even knew me?””
Elena looked down.
May you like
And finally said:
“Because I knew your mother before I knew you.””
