Chapter 13: The Truth That Could Not Stay Buried

For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

The detective’s words stayed on the line.

“Your mother’s fingerprints.””

I looked at Martha.

She was already crying.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Just broken.

“Daniel,” she whispered.

I lowered the phone.

“Did you cut the brakes?””

The hallway became silent.

Elena covered her mouth.

Sarah stared at Martha with disbelief.

“No,” Martha said immediately.

But her voice lacked the confidence it once had.

“Then explain.””

She looked down.

“I didn’t mean for that to happen.””

My heart stopped.

Those words were worse than a confession.

Because they meant something happened.

Something real.

“What did you do?””

Martha sat down in the hospital chair.

“I only wanted to stop Sarah from leaving with Leo.””

Sarah stepped back.

“Leaving?””

Martha looked at her.

“You were going to take him away.””

“No.””

Sarah’s voice shook.

“I was going to protect him.””

“You were going to tell Daniel everything.””

“Yes.””

Martha closed her eyes.

“And I couldn’t let you destroy my son’s life.””

I stared at her.

“My life?””

She looked up.

“I thought I was saving you.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

Even now.

Even after everything.

She still believed she was the victim.

“The night of the accident,” I said slowly, “what happened?””

Martha wiped her face.

“I followed Sarah.””

Sarah looked stunned.

“You followed me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew you were going to meet Daniel.””

The pieces connected.

My mother knew.

Sarah knew.

Everyone knew.

Except me.

“I saw you two arguing in the driveway.””

Sarah shook her head.

“We weren’t arguing.””

Martha looked away.

“You were telling him the truth.””

I swallowed.

“What truth?””

“That I had been moving money.””

My jaw tightened.

“You stole from me.””

“I borrowed.””

The word made me laugh.

“Borrowed?””

“I was going to pay it back.””

“How?””

No answer.

Because there wasn’t one.

Martha continued.

“When you and Sarah left, I followed.””

Her hands trembled.

“I wanted to scare her.””

Sarah’s face changed.

“What did you do?””

Martha started crying.

“I loosened the brake line.””

The world stopped.

Elena gasped.

I felt Sarah grab my arm.

“But I didn’t know you would drive that night.””

Martha looked at me.

“I thought you would check the car.””

My voice was barely there.

“You thought?””

She nodded.

“I thought you would get angry. I thought Sarah would leave.””

“And then?””

“I was going to fix it.””

I stared at her.

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

She covered her face.

“Because I panicked.””

The truth was finally out.

And somehow, it felt worse than the lies.

Because this wasn’t an accident.

It wasn’t a misunderstanding.

It was a choice.

A terrible choice.

Sarah whispered:

“You almost killed us.””

Martha looked at her.

“I never wanted that.””

Sarah’s eyes filled.

“But it happened.””

I turned away.

I couldn’t look at my mother anymore.

The woman who taught me how to ride a bike.

The woman who held me when I was sick.

The woman I trusted more than anyone.

She was the same person who stole years from my son.

A detective arrived thirty minutes later.

Martha gave a statement.

Elena did too.

But before she left, Elena stopped me.

“Daniel.””

I didn’t turn.

“I’m sorry.””

I closed my eyes.

“I know.””

She cried.

“Can you ever forgive me?””

I finally looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

Because forgiveness wasn’t the same as forgetting.

And I could never forget.

That night, I went home with Sarah and Leo.

Not to fix everything.

Not to pretend everything was okay.

Just because for the first time in years, I was exactly where I belonged.

The next morning, I opened my front door.

A package was sitting outside.

No return address.

Inside was a flash drive.

And a note.

Daniel,

May you like

Your mother wasn’t the only person hiding something.

You need to see what Elena recorded before the wedding.
