Chapter 12: The Deal They Made Behind My Back
The hospital hallway became silent.
Not the peaceful kind.
The kind where everyone knows something terrible is about to be revealed.
I stared at Elena.
“You knew my mother.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“How?””
She looked at Martha.
That small glance told me everything.
Martha answered.
“We worked together.””
“Doing what?””
Neither spoke.
I laughed quietly.
“Of course.””
I looked around.
“Another secret.””
Elena stepped forward.
“Daniel, please.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I spent years wondering why everyone disappeared from my life.””
My eyes moved between them.
“Now I understand.””
Martha looked ashamed.
Elena looked terrified.
Sarah stood beside me.
For the first time in years, she wasn’t alone.
“I want the truth.””
Martha sighed.
“I met Elena through work.””
“And?””
“She was helping me.””
“Helping you do what?””
Silence.
Then Elena spoke.
“Control the situation.””
My stomach tightened.
“What situation?””
She looked down.
“Your divorce.””
The words hit me.
“You were involved before we met?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Elena wiped her tears.
“Because Martha said you were broken.””
I stared.
“She said you needed someone new.””
Sarah looked away.
Pain crossed her face.
I realized then.
Sarah wasn’t angry.
She was hurt.
Because she knew exactly what it felt like to be erased.
“What did Martha promise you?””
Elena didn’t answer.
Martha did.
“She would help him move forward.””
I looked at my mother.
“No.””
My voice became cold.
“She would help you replace my family.””
Martha shook her head.
“I wanted you happy.””
“Then why did you hide my son?””
No answer.
I looked at Elena.
“Why did you agree?””
She started crying.
“I thought Sarah was really gone.””
“You knew she wasn’t.””
“I didn’t know everything.””
“You knew enough.””
She closed her eyes.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“That if I told you, I would lose you.””
I stared at her.
“So you chose yourself.””
She couldn’t argue.
Because it was true.
A nurse walked past us.
A normal moment.
A normal hospital.
But my entire life had changed.
I opened the folder again.
There was one more document.
A financial agreement.
My name.
Martha’s name.
And Elena’s.
I looked at them.
“What is this?””
Nobody spoke.
I read the first line.
Property transfer agreement.
My house.
My investments.
My accounts.
All connected.
My hands shook.
“You planned this?””
“No,” Elena whispered.
But Martha’s silence was louder.
I looked at my mother.
“You were going to take everything.””
“No.””
“Then explain.””
She couldn’t.
Sarah picked up the document.
“Daniel.””
I looked at her.
“There’s a date.””
“What?””
She pointed.
The agreement was signed two days after the accident.
Two days after I woke up.
Two days after my memory became unclear.
My stomach turned.
Because someone had taken advantage of me when I couldn’t protect myself.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man’s voice spoke.
“Daniel Carter?””
“Yes.””
“This is Detective Harris.””
My body went still.
“Why are you calling me?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because we reopened the accident investigation.””
I looked at Martha.
Then Elena.
“Why?””
The detective lowered his voice.
“Because we found evidence that the crash may not have been an accident.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“What evidence?””
A long silence.
Then he said:
“Someone cut the brake line.””
The hallway spun.
I looked at Sarah.
She looked just as shocked.
Then the detective added:
“And Daniel…”
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Yes?””
“We found fingerprints.””
I waited.
“Whose?””
The detective paused.
May you like
Then answered:
“Your mother’s.””
