Chapter 6: The Family Secret
I didn’t speak for several seconds.
The hospital room felt too small.
Too quiet.
“What truth?””
Maya looked down.
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“She wouldn’t tell me.””
I stood and walked toward the window.
Outside, Chicago moved like nothing had happened.
Cars drove past.
People walked down sidewalks.
Everyone continued living normal lives.
But my family had become something I didn’t recognize.
“What exactly did she say?””
Maya closed her eyes, trying to remember.
“She was angry.””
“What did she say?””
Maya’s voice became softer.
“She said, ‘You think you know who Caleb is, but you don’t know what he was born into.’”
I turned around.
“What does that mean?””
“I don’t know.””
For the first time since this nightmare started, I wondered if my mother believed she was protecting me.
Not that it justified anything.
Never.
But maybe there was something deeper.
Something buried.
Later that afternoon, Detective Harris called.
“Caleb, we found Daniel.””
My body went tense.
“Where?””
“He came to the station voluntarily.””
“Why?””
“He says he wants to explain.””
I almost laughed.
Explain.
That was the word everyone used when they wanted forgiveness before admitting what they did.
“Do not meet him alone,” Detective Harris warned.
“I won’t.””
An hour later, Daniel walked into the hospital.
I watched him approach.
He looked exhausted.
Guilty.
But I didn’t know if it was real.
“Caleb.””
I didn’t stand.
“Why?””
He stopped.
“What?””
“Why did you help her?””
His face changed.
“I didn’t lock Maya up.””
“You were part of it.””
Daniel looked away.
“I was trying to stop something worse.””
I stared at him.
“What could possibly be worse?””
He sat down slowly.
“Mom found something.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
“She found out about our family.””
I frowned.
“Our family?””
Daniel looked at Maya.
Then back at me.
“There are things you don’t know about Dad.””
I felt a strange pressure in my chest.
“My father died fifteen years ago.””
“I know.””
“Then what are you talking about?””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Mom has been hiding the truth about him.””
I said nothing.
He continued.
“And she thinks Maya will expose everything.””
My mind raced.
“Maya doesn’t know anything about Dad.””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“That’s the problem.””
“What does that mean?””
He opened his mouth.
Then stopped.
Before he could answer, Detective Harris entered the room.
“Daniel.””
My brother looked up.
The detective held a folder.
“We found another recording.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“What recording?””
Detective Harris placed it on the table.
“One your mother made.””
Nobody moved.
Then the detective pressed play.
My mother’s voice filled the room.
“Caleb can never know what happened the night his father disappeared.””
My blood went cold.
Daniel looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw real fear in his eyes.
May you like
Because whatever secret my mother had buried…
It was connected to me.
