Chapter 14: The Last Recording
I knew it was a trap.
Every instinct told me.
Detective Harris told me.
Daniel told me.
But none of them understood.
Maya was my wife.
The woman who had spent three days locked away because of my family.
The woman who still held my hand when she had every reason to let go.
I couldn’t wait.
“I’m going.””
Harris grabbed my arm.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Then what?””
“We call backup.””
“They have Maya.””
“We don’t know that.””
I showed him the message.
His expression hardened.
“We go together.””
The address led us to an abandoned warehouse outside the city.
The same kind of place where my father’s story had ended.
Or where it had begun.
The door was already open.
That scared me more than a locked door would have.
We entered slowly.
“Victor Hale,” Harris called.
Silence.
Then a voice echoed.
“Still protecting people who don’t deserve it, Harris?””
My body froze.
An older man stepped from the shadows.
Victor Hale.
He looked nothing like the monster I imagined.
That was what made him terrifying.
He looked ordinary.
Calm.
Controlled.
Behind him stood my mother.
Alive.
And Maya.
My heart stopped.
“Maya!””
She looked at me.
“I’m okay.””
Victor smiled.
“Family reunions are emotional.””
I stepped forward.
“What do you want?””
Victor laughed softly.
“The same thing your father wanted.””
I stared at him.
“And what was that?””
“The truth.””
I almost laughed.
“You killed him.””
Victor’s expression changed.
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
“No, I didn’t.””
Everyone went silent.
Victor looked at my mother.
“Tell him.””
My mother looked at me.
For the first time in my life, I saw her completely broken.
“Caleb…”
“Tell me.””
She closed her eyes.
“Your father was alive after that night.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Daniel looked shocked.
Even Harris looked stunned.
“What are you saying?”” Harris demanded.
My mother whispered:
“He survived.””
The warehouse went silent.
“Then where is he?””
She looked down.
“He disappeared to protect us.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Victor smiled.
“Your father knew too much.””
My mother continued.
“He created a final recording.””
My eyes narrowed.
“The one nobody found.””
She nodded.
“The one that explains everything.””
Victor stepped forward.
“And it proves your mother was never the villain.””
I looked at her.
I wanted to believe it.
I wanted so badly to believe there was still something good left.
But then I remembered the shed.
The lock.
Maya crying for help.
Good intentions didn’t erase cruelty.
My mother saw my expression.
“I know what I did was unforgivable.””
Her voice broke.
“But I need you to hear the whole truth.””
Victor reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small device.
The same type of recorder my father used.
My breath caught.
“This was found with his belongings.””
Harris stepped forward.
“Where did you get that?””
Victor smiled.
“I kept it safe.””
“No,” Harris said.
“You kept it hidden.””
Victor ignored him.
He pressed play.
Static filled the warehouse.
Then a voice.
My father’s voice.
“Caleb.””
My knees almost gave out.
After fifteen years.
I heard him.
My father.
“If you are listening to this, then the people you trusted have failed you.””
I covered my mouth.
The recording continued.
“But before you judge anyone, understand this.””
A pause.
Then:
“The person who betrayed me was not Evelyn.””
My mother began crying.
The recording continued.
“It was someone closer.””
Everyone looked around.
Then my father said the words that changed everything.
“Daniel Carter was the one who gave Victor Hale my location.””
The world stopped.
I turned slowly toward my brother.
Daniel’s face went pale.
“No.””
He stepped back.
“No, that’s not true.””
But my father’s voice continued.
“I don’t blame my son. He was manipulated.””
I stared at Daniel.
My brother looked terrified.
May you like
Because the recording wasn’t finished.
And my father still had one more secret to reveal.
