Chapter 4: The Name On The Paper
I stared at the name printed on the detective’s report until the letters blurred together.
*Daniel Carter.*
My younger brother.
For several seconds, I convinced myself I had read it wrong.
Maybe exhaustion had twisted the words.
Maybe the hospital lights were playing tricks on me.
But the name stayed there.
Daniel.
My brother.
The person who had stood beside me at my wedding.
The person who had hugged Maya when she told us she was pregnant.
The person who had called her “the sister he never had.””
I looked at Detective Harris.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
He remained quiet.
“That’s impossible.””
“I understand this is difficult,” he said.
“Difficult?”” I laughed, but there was no humor in it.
“You’re telling me my brother helped my mother lock my pregnant wife in a shed.””
Maya reached for my hand.
Her fingers were cold.
Detective Harris nodded slowly.
“We are still investigating his exact involvement. The recording does not show him physically placing the lock on the door.””
“But he was part of it.””
The detective didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
The silence said enough.
I looked at Maya.
She was staring at the blanket covering her legs.
“Did you know?”” I asked softly.
Her eyes lifted.
“Know what?””
“That Daniel was involved.””
She shook her head quickly.
“No.””
There was pain in her voice.
“Caleb, I swear.””
I believed her.
Because Maya had spent three days trapped in a place where she had every reason to hate my entire family.
But she still looked worried about me.
Not herself.
Me.
Detective Harris stood.
“We need you to think carefully about anything unusual over the past few weeks.””
I rubbed my face.
“Unusual?””
“Yes. Arguments. Conversations. Anything involving your mother or brother.””
I tried to remember.
And then something surfaced.
A conversation at dinner.
Two weeks before my business trip.
Daniel had been unusually quiet.
My mother had complained that Maya was “changing me.””
At the time, I had laughed.
I thought it was just another family disagreement.
Now every word felt different.
“What if they wanted her gone?”” I whispered.
Detective Harris looked at me.
“Why would they?””
I looked toward Maya.
Because suddenly, I realized something.
My mother had never hated Maya.
She hated losing control.
And Daniel had always been jealous.
Not openly.
Never enough to prove.
But enough for me to notice.
After the detective left, Maya finally spoke.
“Caleb.””
I turned toward her.
“I need to tell you something.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
She looked afraid.
“Before you came home… Daniel visited me.””
The room went silent.
“When?””
“The day before you returned.””
I sat down.
“What did he say?””
Maya looked away.
“He told me I should think about what was best for everyone.””
“What does that mean?””
She swallowed.
“He said your mother was heartbroken because she felt replaced.””
Anger rose in my chest.
“He actually said that?””
Maya nodded.
“He said you were different since you met me.””
I closed my eyes.
For years, I had ignored little things.
The comments.
The guilt trips.
The subtle attempts to make Maya feel like an outsider.
I always told myself my family just needed time to adjust.
But this wasn’t adjustment.
This was cruelty.
My phone rang.
I looked down.
Daniel’s name appeared on the screen.
Maya saw it.
Neither of us moved.
The phone kept ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Finally, I answered.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then my brother’s voice.
“Caleb.””
I said nothing.
“I heard what happened.””
My jaw tightened.
“You heard?””
“Yes.””
“From who?””
Another pause.
“Mom.””
I looked at Maya.
The person who caused all of this was still trying to control the story.
Daniel continued.
“You need to calm down before you destroy the family.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Destroy the family?””
“Yes. You’re angry right now. But once you think clearly, you’ll realize Mom was trying to help.””
I stared at the hospital wall.
“Help?””
“Caleb—”
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
“You don’t get to explain this away.””
Silence.
Then Daniel lowered his voice.
“Did Detective Harris show you everything?””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
Another pause.
A dangerous pause.
Then Daniel said something that made my blood run cold.
“Because if you haven’t seen the whole recording, you don’t know what your wife was planning.””
The call ended.
I sat there staring at the phone.
Maya’s face had gone pale.
“What did he mean?””
I didn’t answer.
Because deep down, I knew one thing.
Daniel wasn’t trying to defend my mother anymore.
May you like
He was trying to make me doubt Maya.
And that meant there was another secret waiting to come out.
