Chapter 3: The Secret My Mother Buried
I didn’t sleep that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Maya lying on that shed floor.
I saw the fear on her face.
I saw my mother standing outside with a cup of tea.
Like nothing was wrong.
At 7:15 the next morning, Detective Harris arrived at the hospital.
He carried a folder and looked more serious than he had the day before.
Maya was awake, sitting against her pillows.
“Mrs. Carter,” he said gently, “how are you feeling?””
“Tired,” she answered.
“That’s understandable.””
He placed the folder on the chair.
“We recovered more audio from the recorder.””
My body went tense.
“What did you find?””
The detective looked at Maya first.
“Before we play it, I need to ask you something.””
She nodded.
“Did your mother-in-law know about your pregnancy before this incident?””
“Yes,” Maya said.
“Did she react positively?””
Maya looked down.
“No.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Maya hesitated.
“She wanted us to wait.””
“Wait for what?””
“She wanted us to have a different future.””
The room felt colder.
Detective Harris opened the folder.
“Your mother appears to have been planning this confrontation for weeks.””
I stared at him.
“Planning?””
He nodded.
“She didn’t just lose control. She prepared.””
My hands curled into fists.
“What else was on the recording?””
The detective pressed play.
My mother’s voice filled the room again.
“You don’t understand, Evelyn. If Caleb has a child with her, everything changes.””
I froze.
That wasn’t my mother speaking.
That was my mother listening to someone else.
A man’s voice answered.
“He’ll stop depending on you.””
My face went pale.
I looked at Detective Harris.
“Who is that?””
“We’re still identifying him.””
The recording continued.
My mother whispered, “I can’t lose my son.””
The man replied.
“Then make sure his wife leaves.””
Maya covered her mouth.
The detective stopped the audio.
“That’s where the recording cuts off.””
I stood up.
“No.””
Detective Harris looked at me.
“There’s more.””
He turned a page in the folder.
“The recorder also captured a conversation from the day before your return.””
My heart pounded.
“What conversation?””
He looked directly at me.
“The man’s name was mentioned.””
Maya reached for my hand.
“Caleb…”
The detective took a breath.
“The person your mother was talking to was not a stranger.””
A terrible feeling moved through my chest.
“Who was it?””
Detective Harris slowly opened the folder.

And when I saw the name written on the page, I felt the entire world tilt beneath my feet.
