Chapter 10: The Detective’s Forgotten Past

I stared at the photograph until my fingers went numb.

Detective Harris.

Younger.

Standing beside my father.

Standing beside Thomas Reed.

Standing beside the man I had been told disappeared without a trace.

For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything around me.

Not the hospital machines.

Not the voices in the hallway.

Not even Maya asking my name.

“Caleb?””

I looked up.

Her face was filled with confusion.

“What happened?””

I handed her the photograph.

She studied it.

Then her eyes widened.

“Is that…”

“Yes.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

“That’s Detective Harris.””

Before we could say anything else, the door opened.

Detective Harris walked in.

He stopped immediately.

His eyes landed on the photograph in my hand.

And for the first time since I met him, he looked afraid.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Afraid.

“You found it,” he said.

The room went silent.

I stood slowly.

“You knew.””

He didn’t answer.

“You knew my father.””

Harris closed the door behind him.

“Caleb—”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t get to explain this away.””

Maya looked between us.

“Detective?””

Harris sighed.

“I was younger.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

He looked at the photograph.

“It isn’t.””

He pulled a chair forward and sat down.

“I was twenty-seven years old.””

“What were you doing with my father?””

Harris rubbed his face.

“Working an undercover investigation.””

My anger paused.

“What?””

“Your father was investigating the same company I was.””

“The company involved in the illegal money?””

He nodded.

“We were trying to collect evidence.””

I looked at the picture.

“Then why did my mother know you?””

Harris was quiet.

Too quiet.

And I knew there was more.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

He looked at Maya.

Then back at me.

“Your mother wasn’t just someone who knew about the investigation.””

My stomach tightened.

“What was she?””

Harris looked away.

“She was the person who gave us the first information.””

I froze.

“My mother helped?””

“Yes.””

For a second, relief almost appeared.

Maybe my mother wasn’t the monster I thought.

Maybe there was another explanation.

Then Harris continued.

“But she changed her mind.””

The relief disappeared.

“Why?””

“Because she realized how dangerous it was.””

“That doesn’t explain what happened to my father.””

Harris looked down.

“Your father was going to testify.””

The words landed hard.

“And?””

“He never made it.””

Silence.

Maya reached for my hand.

“What happened?””

Harris stared at the floor.

“The night your father disappeared, I was supposed to meet him.””

My heartbeat increased.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

He swallowed.

“I arrived too late.””

I stared at him.

“Too late?””

“I found his car.””

“And him?””

Harris didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

I stepped back.

“You let us believe he abandoned us.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I was ordered not to discuss the case.””

“Ordered?””

“Yes.””

“By who?””

Harris looked at me.

And that was when I saw something I never expected.

Shame.

“Your mother.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

“She begged me.””

Maya looked shocked.

“She knew?””

Harris nodded.

“She knew your father was gone.””

I felt sick.

“She lied to me my entire life.””

Harris didn’t defend her.

“She thought she was protecting you.””

I laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I pointed toward the door.

“She locked my pregnant wife in a shed.””

“I know.””

“She destroyed our family.””

“I know.””

“Then stop telling me she was protecting me.””

Harris looked down.

“You’re right.””

The silence stretched.

Finally, he spoke.

“There is something else.””

I stared at him.

“What now?””

“Your mother wasn’t the only person who knew where your father hid the evidence.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who else?””

Harris looked toward the photograph.

“Your brother.””

I felt the room spin.

“Daniel?””

“He found out years ago.””

Maya whispered:

“How?””

Harris answered quietly.

“Because your father left something behind.””

“What?””

“A message.””

I stepped closer.

“What message?””

Harris reached into his coat pocket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Not Caleb Carter.

Just:

*My son.*

I stared at it.

“Where did you get that?””

Harris looked at me.

“I’ve been keeping it safe for fifteen years.””

My hands shook as I took it.

Then he said the words that made my heart stop.

“But before you open it, you need to know something.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“Your father didn’t disappear because someone wanted him silent.””

May you like

A pause.

“He disappeared because someone close to him betrayed him.””
