Chapter 5: The Lie They Wanted Me To Believe

The next morning, I left the hospital for the first time since Maya was admitted.

Not because I wanted to.

Because Detective Harris asked me to meet him at the station.

He said there was something I needed to see.

The drive felt endless.

Every street reminded me of a different memory.

Daniel and I riding bikes as kids.

My mother teaching us how to cook.

Family holidays.

Pictures.

Smiles.

All of it felt fake now.

At the station, Detective Harris placed a small evidence bag on the table.

Inside was Maya’s broken phone.

“We recovered data from this.””

I looked at it.

“What does that have to do with anything?””

“You said your mother took her phone.””

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“She didn’t just take it.””

He turned his computer screen toward me.

“She deleted messages.””

I leaned closer.

“What messages?””

“Between Maya and your doctor.””

My heart dropped.

“What?””

Detective Harris opened a file.

The messages appeared on screen.

They were about the pregnancy.

Appointments.

Concerns.

Normal conversations.

Then I saw the deleted conversation.

My mother had accessed Maya’s phone.

She had read private messages.

And one message caught my attention.

It was from Maya to me.

A message she never sent.

*I think your mom is becoming dangerous. I don’t know how to tell you without hurting you.*

I stopped breathing.

“She wrote this?””

Detective Harris nodded.

“But never sent it.””

“Why?””

“Because someone deleted it before she could.””

I stared at the screen.

Then I saw another file.

A recording.

“Where did this come from?””

“The phone.””

My hands shook.

Detective Harris pressed play.

Maya’s voice came through.

Quiet.

Scared.

“I don’t want Caleb to choose between us.””

Then my mother’s voice.

“You don’t get to decide what happens in my son’s life.””

Maya answered.

“I’m not trying to.””

“You already have.””

The recording stopped.

I looked at Detective Harris.

“When was this?””

“Three days before the shed incident.””

I leaned back.

My mother had been building a story.

A story where Maya was the problem.

Where she was stealing me away.

Where she deserved punishment.

But why?

Why go this far?

Detective Harris watched me carefully.

“There’s something else.””

He pulled out another document.

“This is your mother’s financial history.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“We found unusual payments.””

“To who?””

He slid the paper forward.

My eyes moved down the page.

Then stopped.

A monthly payment.

For the last eight months.

Made to Daniel.

I looked up.

“My brother?””

Detective Harris nodded.

“Your mother has been transferring him money.””

“Why?””

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.””

I felt sick.

Because suddenly, the pieces were forming.

My mother wasn’t acting alone.

Daniel wasn’t protecting her.

They were working together.

But there was still one thing I couldn’t understand.

Why would my own brother help destroy my marriage?

When I returned to the hospital, Maya was awake.

She looked at me.

“You found something.””

I nodded.

“Daniel was involved.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I’m sorry.””

I sat beside her.

“No.””

I took her hand.

“You have nothing to apologize for.””

She squeezed my fingers.

“Caleb…”

“What?””

“There’s something I didn’t tell you.””

My heart sank.

“What is it?””

She looked toward the window.

“Before your mother locked me inside…”

She hesitated.

“She said something.””

“What?””

Maya looked back at me.

“She said she wasn’t doing this because she hated me.””

A chill moved through me.

“What did she say?””

May you like

Maya whispered:

“She said she was protecting you from the truth about your family.””
