Chapter 9: The Secret of My Mother’s Death

I read the message three times.

Then a fourth.

Because my brain refused to accept the words.

My mother.

Eight years ago.

The night everything changed.

The night my father disappeared.

The night Ethan first entered my life.

No.

That couldn’t be connected.

It couldn’t.

I looked up slowly.

Everyone was watching me.

“What is it?””

Ethan asked.

His voice was different.

He already knew.

I turned my phone toward him.

The moment he saw the message, all color disappeared from his face.

Patricia noticed.

“What does it say?””

Nobody answered.

I held the phone tighter.

“Ethan.””

He looked at me.

“What happened the night my mother died?””

The question hung in the air.

For a second, I saw the old Ethan.

The one who comforted me.

The one who told me everything would be okay.

Then he disappeared.

And the stranger remained.

“Sarah…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Answer me.””

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Daniel looked between us.

“Ethan?””

Finally, Ethan whispered:

“I wasn’t supposed to be there.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

He looked broken.

“The night your mother died…”

He swallowed.

“I was there.””

The room went silent.

I couldn’t move.

“You knew my mother?””

“Not like that.””

“Then how?””

He looked at the floor.

“Your father contacted me.””

I felt sick.

“Why?””

“Because he needed help.””

“With what?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

And suddenly, I understood.

Every secret.

Every lie.

Every missing piece.

They were all connected.

“Help with what?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“He wanted access to your grandmother’s documents.””

I stared.

“And my mother found out?””

Ethan nodded slowly.

My knees almost gave out.

“No.””

“Sarah…”

“No.””

I backed away.

“You’re lying.””

“I wish I was.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Ethan, you need to explain everything.””

Ethan sat down.

For the first time, he looked like someone carrying something too heavy.

“Your mother discovered what your father was planning.””

My voice shook.

“What was he planning?””

“He wanted to challenge the inheritance.””

I looked at the documents.

“He wanted the trust.””

“Yes.””

“And my mother stopped him.””

Ethan nodded.

“She threatened to expose him.””

The room felt freezing.

“And then?””

Ethan looked at me.

“I don’t know exactly what happened.””

I stared.

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“So you know something.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I know your father left.””

I whispered:

“And you stayed.””

He looked away.

That hurt more than anything.

Because he had been there.

At the moment my family broke apart.

And then he entered my life.

A perfect stranger who knew exactly what I had lost.

“Why did you marry me?””

The question came out quietly.

Ethan looked at me.

“Because at first, I thought I could fix what my father did.””

I froze.

“Your father?””

He nodded.

“But then I fell in love with you.””

I laughed.

A broken sound.

“You don’t get to say that anymore.””

Before he could answer, there was a loud knock at the door.

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked toward the entrance.

Another knock.

Stronger.

Then a voice came from outside.

“Sarah?””

My blood turned cold.

Because I knew that voice.

A voice I hadn’t heard in eight years.

The door slowly opened.

And the man standing there looked older.

Tired.

But unmistakably familiar.

My father.

He looked past me.

Straight at Ethan.

Then he said:

“You finally told her the truth.””

I couldn’t breathe.

May you like

Because my father wasn’t here to apologize.

He was here because he knew the secret Ethan still hadn’t revealed.
