Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew the Truth
For a few seconds, I couldn’t hear anything except the sound of my own heartbeat.
The woman on the phone stayed silent.
Like she knew I needed time to process what she had just said.
“I know what your husband did.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Who are you?””
Across the room, Ethan watched me carefully.
Too carefully.
That was when I realized something.
He wasn’t confused.
He was afraid.
The woman finally answered.
“My name is Lauren.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But Ethan reacted immediately.
His face went pale.
“Sarah,” he said quickly.
“Hang up.””
Everyone looked at him.
Even Patricia.
Because for the first time that night, Ethan wasn’t pretending.
He was panicking.
I turned away from him.
“Why?””
Lauren took a breath.
“Because Ethan won’t tell you the truth. He never does.””
My stomach tightened.
“What truth?””
There was a pause.
Then Lauren said:
“I used to work at the bank where he applied for the loan.””
Daniel stepped closer.
His expression changed.
He was listening carefully now.
Lauren continued.
“When I reviewed the paperwork, I noticed something strange. Your signature didn’t match the other documents you had signed before.””
I looked at the fake signature sitting on the table.
The one that had my name attached to it.
“I reported it,” she said.
“And then?””
Her voice became quieter.
“Then Ethan came to my office.””
The room felt colder.
“What did he say?””
Lauren hesitated.
“He asked me to ignore it.””
My eyes moved toward Ethan.
He looked away.
“Why would he do that?”” I asked.
Lauren answered immediately.
“Because if the loan went through, he planned to use the money to pay off his mother’s debts.””
Patricia gasped.
“What?””
Everyone turned toward her.
She looked at Ethan.
“You told me the money was for an investment.””
Ethan rubbed his forehead.
“Mom, please.””
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“You lied to me too?””
The woman who had spent years making me feel like an outsider was finally realizing she wasn’t the only person Ethan had been manipulating.
Lauren continued.
“I kept copies of everything because I didn’t trust him.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Can you put her on speaker?””
I nodded.
I placed the phone on the table.
Lauren’s voice filled the dining room.
“I’m sorry, Sarah. I should have contacted you sooner.””
“Why didn’t you?””
“Because Ethan found out I knew.””
My chest tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“He threatened to report me for violating privacy rules.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“He intimidated you.””
Lauren didn’t answer.
She didn’t have to.
The silence said enough.
I looked at Ethan.
“You threatened her?””
“I was protecting myself.””
The answer came so quickly that I almost didn’t believe him.
Not denying it.
Justifying it.
Daniel closed his notebook.
“Mr. Carter, you should be careful about making statements.””
Ethan ignored him.
“You don’t understand anything.””
I stared at him.
“Then explain.””
He looked around the room.
At his mother.
At the lawyer.
At me.
Then he finally said something I never expected.
“I was trying to fix everything.””
I laughed softly.
“By lying?””
“I was under pressure.””
“From who?””
He looked at Patricia.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
And then Patricia whispered:
“Ethan.””
He looked ashamed.
That was the first real emotion I had seen from him all night.
Not anger.
Not arrogance.
Shame.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Sarah, I think you need to hear the full story.””
I looked at him.
“What full story?””
He opened the folder again.
“There are additional financial records.””
My heart sank.
“How many secrets are there?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel placed another document on the table.
“This concerns your marriage account.””
I picked it up.
The first line made my hands go cold.
A transfer.
A large transfer.
Sent six months ago.
To an account I didn’t recognize.
I looked at Ethan.
“Who is Rebecca?””
His face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
Because I saw recognition.
I saw fear.

And I knew that whoever Rebecca was…
She was the secret Ethan had been protecting most carefully.
