Chapter 13: The Last Secret

The room felt smaller after Patricia spoke.

For eight years, I had lived with a story that never made sense.

A careless driver.

A dark road.

A tragic accident.

But now I was standing in a room full of people who knew the truth.

And all of them had chosen silence.

I looked at Patricia.

“Who?””

My voice was barely above a whisper.

She stared at the floor.

“Sarah…”

“Who did it?””

She closed her eyes.

Then she said:

“Your father.””

My father immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

Patricia looked at him.

“Yes.””

The anger in her voice surprised me.

“You left her there.””

My father’s face crumbled.

“I didn’t hit her.””

“But you caused it.””

The words landed heavily.

I looked between them.

“What are you talking about?””

My father shook his head.

“I was trying to stop her.””

“Stop her from what?””

He didn’t answer.

Patricia did.

“From going to the police.””

I felt sick.

My father looked at me.

“I was scared.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because anything was funny.

Because somehow, after everything, I wasn’t surprised anymore.

Everyone was scared.

Everyone made choices.

And somehow, I was always the one who paid for them.

Daniel stepped forward.

“We need the complete story.””

Patricia nodded slowly.

“That night, your mother discovered that your father had been trying to access your inheritance.””

I looked at my father.

He lowered his eyes.

“She confronted him.””

“Yes.””

“And then?””

Patricia swallowed.

“They argued beside the road.””

My father whispered:

“She told me she would expose me.””

“And you followed her.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His answer was painful.

“Because I wanted to apologize.””

Nobody believed him.

Not completely.

Not after everything.

Patricia continued.

“But when your mother drove away, your father followed her.””

I looked at my father.

“Then what happened?””

His voice broke.

“I pulled out in front of her.””

My heart stopped.

“You blocked her?””

“I was trying to make her stop.””

“But she didn’t.””

He shook his head.

“She turned.””

The room went silent.

“And then?””

My father looked away.

“Then another car came.””

Daniel frowned.

“Another car?””

Everyone looked confused.

Patricia spoke quietly.

“That was the car that hit her.””

I stared.

“Then why did you say my father did it?””

Patricia looked at me.

“Because he was responsible for creating the situation.””

My chest tightened.

“But he didn’t hit her.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“He didn’t.””

I looked at Ethan.

He had been silent too long.

“You knew.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

My anger returned.

“You knew my father wasn’t the driver?””

“Yes.””

“And you let me believe he abandoned her?””

Ethan’s eyes filled with regret.

“I was afraid.””

I stepped toward him.

“You keep saying that.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“You don’t know what it feels like to spend years thinking someone you loved chose to leave you.””

Ethan looked destroyed.

But I didn’t stop.

“You became the person who comforted me.””

He closed his eyes.

“Sarah…”

“You knew exactly what pain I carried.””

A tear rolled down my face.

“And you used it.””

He didn’t deny it.

Because there was nothing left to deny.

Daniel’s phone suddenly rang.

He answered.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

Everyone looked at him.

He listened silently.

Then he looked at me.

“Sarah.””

I wiped my face.

“What?””

“The police found the vehicle records.””

My heart raced.

“What vehicle?””

He looked at Patricia.

“The third car.””

Patricia went pale.

Daniel continued.

“The car that actually hit your mother.””

Everyone held their breath.

“Who owned it?””

Daniel looked at the screen.

Then slowly said:

“It was registered to a company.””

My stomach tightened.

“Whose company?””

He looked at Ethan.

“Your husband’s.””

I froze.

Ethan stepped back.

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“The records don’t lie.””

I looked at Ethan.

The last person I thought could surprise me.

But then he said something that changed everything.

“I didn’t own that company eight years ago.””

A pause.

May you like

Then he whispered:

“Your father did.””
